What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Both sides upper ball joints, lower right ball joint. The right upper was pretty bad especially. The left lower ball joint is newer than the right so left it alone for now.
Also replaced the broken right steering rack boot with a beck/arnley 103-2864.

Replaced the locker wiring harness 82127-35100 after discovering the wiring had degraded under the covering which is why I had intermittant/ sluggish/ no problem locking. Both mine (donor parts) and my husband's 99 (original) had the same issues. Continuity testing found the problem.

Annnd new wiper blades.

I bought a ton of interior parts from a 1999 SR5 that had the frame rotted out.

Scored the cup holder center console/e-brake, dashboard (my dash pad is cracked in 3 places), headliner, rearview mirror/sunroof controls, vanity mirrors, sunroof, all four seats, and the retractable cargo cover for $1k.

My 97 LTD has rotted leather seats and the sunroof leaks and doesn't work. It destroyed the board in my headliner due to the PO not doing anything about it for too long.

I'm going to retrofit the cloth front seats onto my powered bases so I can keep that functionality but ditch the torn up leather.

Can't wait to spruce up the interior of my 97!

I recently replaced all the audio system components in the 4Runner except for the subwoofer. I already had an aftermarket system with Kenwood head unit, Kenwood front door 6.5"/1" separates, Alpine 5.25" coax in the rear doors, Alpine amp for front speakers, Aura Sound 350w amp for subwoofer which is a Dual SBP10 10" sub in a bandpass enclosure. I installed a new Kenwood KDC-X705 head unit, Ampere Audio AA-75.4 4x 75W amp for the mid-hi speakers, Down4Sound JP3 CPT 555W Subwoofer amp, and CDT Audio MX series speakers for the front and rear doors. MX-261 6.5"/1" separates for the front and MX-5X coax for the rear doors.

All-in-All a big upgrade over the previous setup. Better imaging, sound quality and more power for better dynamics. The KDC-X705 has a detailed and extensive set of DSP functions. I don't want nor need a touch screen. Hands Free calling is nice with a dedicated mic that I placed on the steering column. I had that with the last head unit, but no external mic. I use a Garmin for GPS most of the time and don't care about tying that function to a head unit. I finished the install today.

I also swapped out my LC 7.5 wrap coils for a set of OME 891's that I had since the Tundra coils in the front are starting to sag. They are 14 years old with quite a few miles on them. The coil swap dropped the rear of the truck about 1" and leveled it out quite a bit. I will be buying a set of Bilstein 6112 coilovers in August to replace the aging Tundra TRD/5100 setup.

I have over 400,000 miles on my 2000 Toyota 4Runner. It has the original engine and transmission.

Today, I checked the oil. It has a very slow engine oil leak around the heads, and another one that seems to be near the rear main seal. Every couple of months, I have to top of the oil.

If I may add, I also had to put it in the shop earlier in the week because the tumblers in the ignition were stuck and I could not rotate the key over far enough to start the car. This was the first time since I bought it in September 1999 that it left me stranded away from home.

A keymaker cleaned up the ignition tumblers. He also made it so that I can now lock my doors. I thought I had a bad Body Electronic Control Module but it turned out to be a problem with my key and the worn out door lock actuator on the drivers side. I have not tried the passenger side. I will do so right now....OK, that door still does not work to unlock but does lock.

He also made me an extra key. I paid 100.00 to get it towed and he charged me $320.00 for the repair and extra key.

Tomorrow, I will have to add some power steering fluid. It has been leaking lately (in the last 6 months) as well.

Some squirrels inflicted damage on the wiring in my car over the winter. I am wondering if maybe they may have chewed on some fluid lines, too?

Thanks and Take Care.

Welcome to T4R

Just curious - are you on the original oil pump in the engine and original fuel pump too?

Im at 265k on my 97 shooting/hoping for 400k and wondering a lot about these 2 parts...

Not today, but this weekend I cleaned the condenser coils (thank you Timmy the Toolman for confirming a question I have had for a few months) and worked on getting water stains from a sunroof leaks a few years ago out of the headliner. Here are few before and after pics:

Replaced O2 sensor. I think it might have been the factory one and it lasted 283k if so. Gasket was rusted to hell and back and the sealing surface on the bung was also pretty bad. Nuts also looked pretty bad but I soaked them in liquid wrench for a few days which made that a non issue thankfully. Tried to get the surface as smooth as I could with a file (I think some of the gasket metal had merged with the surface) but couldn't get it great. Decided to send it anyway and and it seems my truck is running better than ever. Getting to the connector on the manual is a pita. Why didn't they make like the auto on the side of the transmission ><

Installed my new Radflow 2.5 coilovers with 650 lb springs. Top studs were splayed a touch wide, they didn't slide in the 3 holes at first. Had to tap in the studs with a hammer on both coilovers.

Anyone need a free set of 10y/o toytech coilovers? Blown Bilstein shocks and torn bottom bushings. Drake, CO

New to Me 98

On Sept 1, 2022, I lost my Friend and Neighbor Evan. He served our Country as a Marine Helicopter Mechanic for 12 years. He was a great friend. We wrenched on our 4Runners together when we could and were always checking out each other's projects and sharing helpful tips.
His Wife, Stacey, texted me a couple weeks ago to see if I was interested in another 4Runner project. Didn't take me long to accept.
I named this one "Patriot" after my friend Evan. Stacey bought this 4Runner NEW in 1998. Window sticker was close to $34,000. She has been the only owner. I can't believe she GAVE this 4Runner to me. I am SO grateful!!!

1998 Natural White SR5 5 Speed Supercharged with Oak Cloth interior.
Pictures to follow.

Tried to go to this lookout/shooting pit up in Darrington WA that I could see from a map, never been up there but supposedly you could see nearly 100 miles, clear out to the peninsula. Was about a 25 mile trip from the bottom of the mountain, but at about 15 miles the trail completely washed away - then maybe half a mile from the washout there was a 3ft wide tree laying across the trail too. Major bummer!

Coolant flush and a Long Road trip

Completed an over 3500 mile long road trip, through florida and up the east coast to new york, back down the coast and into asheville, then back to florida. Those are odometer miles too, I have 33’s so it was probably a bit more..

Sent my oil off to black stone labs for the first time and they mentioned excess potassium and sodium, this was only my second scheduled oil change after replacing HG’s however, and i’m not losing any coolant, so I’m confident it’s just residual coolant left in the engine oil. Sending off this newest oil change after the trip to see what they say this time around. They also mentioned low metal levels and appropriate wear so fingers crossed I’m all good.

It’s a 2000 4x4 w rear locker. 203,000 on the truck, probably around 260k on the motor. I believe the donor engine had 220k when installed..
Runs absolutely great though.
Did a coolant flush last night, there were definitely some small black flakes in the bottom of the buckets after flushing. I got it pretty clean however and refilled with distilled and toyota long life.

The truck ran without a hiccup on the trip. I have milestar patagonia 285 75 16s and had them aired to around 38-40 psi the whole time and I kid ya not, we got 19mpg most of the trip. Pretty good for a 3 inch lift and 33s. Truck was super loaded down with amps, guitars, drum stands, cymbals, duffle bags, and three dudes (band on tour). She managed to get us there, back, and all over many different towns with a hiccup.

Love my 3rd gen!
Have put so much money into this thing it’s ridiculous but the fact I didn’t have to rent a car for this trip proves that taking care of it was all worth it, and that if you do enough preventative maintenance and listen to your rig, it will USUALLY return the favor. :cowboy:

Rebuilt my rear hatch latch system. It was sticking and would randomly not want to lock, unlock, or open. Replaced the handle, outside garnish, and inside latch system with OEM parts. Works perfectly now. Also replaced my needle bearing with the ECGS bearing.

I'm getting worried I will have to do this job soon myself. Key cylinder is sometimes sticky and the handle as well. Driver and passenger key cylinders are also not great. I should probably put some dry lube in them first to see if that works, Might even take them out and clean them. Did you go pick n pull parts or new OEM? How much?

I bought all new OEM from Amayama. Parts were $336 + shipping.
The only reason I replaced the garnish was because the plastic parts where the handle screws into were broken so it wasn't tight to body and water could get inside. My handle was all rusty and with how cheap it is I figured it's easier to just replace it. No reason to put back in a old one with how much work it is to get it out in the first place.
If you didn't want to spend the money on the whole control assembly you could maybe take it out and grease all the moving parts and that might make stuff not as sticky. I replaced mine because some of the metal was rusty from water getting on it and i'm sure the motor was getting pretty old after 222k miles. It is riveted on though which is annoying as you have to drill out the old ones and get new ones. Timmy has a helpful video on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDDaavQUU54&feature=youtu.be

There r 3 diff colors of sealer on, the light gray blends in with the epoxy:
