So today l am trying to get my 1999 SR5 to start and to release the key.. I am desperate as l have to drive to NC from TX on Sunday.

What l have done is (1)removed the ignition switch safety lock actuator under the dash to release the key, (2) have removed the shifter cover and the little plug(don't know name) that allows shifter to move freely.

What is happening is, key will still only released when on disconnect battery. HOWEVER, once power comes back and l try to start car, it all shuts down... no start, no horn, no light, etc. So l remove battery terminal, key releases, power comes back. But when l turn key again...it all shuts down. I am sooo frustrated. I don't know what else to do , and l can't seem to be able to start a new thread for help yet. Guess l need more posts. I am open to any idea...and if anyone is in Austin TX willing to assist...l am willing to reward your time. Thank you for reading.

What is your battery voltage?

I did both head gaskets, timing belt, water pump, and new spark plugs, and my 4runner won't start. Throws a P0340 code so I tried replacing camshaft position sensor and it still throws the code and won't start. Most I have gotten it to do is idle at 300rpm for about 3 seconds.

I'm not good with anything electrical, which is what your issue sounds like, but its possible that your starting system ignition fuse is blown. It's a 30 amp fuse located in the engine bay fuse box. I attached a link of the fuse box diagrams for the 3rd gen. Scroll down the page until you get to the engine compartment fuse box and it's number 28. It's worth a shot!

Just did timing belt/water pump job. Leaked water on first startup after job was done, luckily just a poorly seated thermostat gasket. Glad it’s done!

Drove it to its (and our) new home in beautiful Portland. Averaged about 15.5 mpg on the 1000 mile journey. Interestingly, it was about 0.5 mg higher on the first half of the drive than the second. I'm guessing all the mountain passes are brutal on gas mileage.

Welcome to the PNW. You'll probably find that 16-18mpg range sticks because of all the hills. It is what it is hwell:

Swapped my throttle body today
Got hit with a P1121 code and lost all acceleration 3 hours into a road trip the other night and you can’t change any sensors on an ‘01, whole TB has to be replaced.

What I did to my 4runner today

I put all brand new water pump, pullys, rad, timing belt, gas tank, fuel filter and sprayed the frame with undercoating

What gas tank did you end up replacing yours with?

Aftermarket or OEM?

I sprayed the frame and underside of my 'Runner with Blaster Surface Shield to try and keep the rust at bay.

My DD was stolen last night

went to the Lexus Dealer to get some shape molded hose and after being there an hr trying to get the guy to even find/understand what I wanted, told him a would get a part # and come back, to which he told me "Toyota doesn't have part numbers for their hoses..." to which I chuckled and said yes they do (with a, is this guy *&^king with me look) to which the near 70 yr old man storm off and slammed the parts department door...
