What did you do with your 4runner today?

Checked Underneath The Runner

Looked underneath the front of my Runner, and discovered grease coming out of the CV boots, after I put a 2/1 lift on this weekend. Not what I wanted to see! :redbrick:

You more experienced guys have any advice?

Check out this recent thread. If they are leaking from the clamps, best to reclamp with the marine style worm drive style...

Last post in this thread talks about what parts to order from McMaster Carr.

If they are leaking because they are torn then you'll want to replace axle or reboot. Rebootings cheap, not too bad of a job, and great time to swap out to the worm drive clamps.

Thank you very much! So this leaky CV symptom is very common once you change the angle of the joint?

Seems the grease took the path of least resistance, which was out the smaller side. Again, I appreciate the feedback, and I'll be picking up some of those marine style clamps.

I took my runner to get a 1" toytech body lift installed, but we ran into a couple unexpected issues, ie. front and rear bumpers, :(
trying to find the right thread to hopefully answer some questions to that

Interesting, Ill look into that. Thanks man!

No problem. Reason I say this is because I fabbed a battery 'box' out of .063 aluminum at my work which I planned to bolt down to the bare metal to have my battery sit in, then one of the dudes I work with told me that so I ditched that idea and went back to the standard plastic tray-general auto store holder.

But if I'm wrong lemme know! Just passing along what I was told. I'd buy one of these if that wasn't the case, they look tough and reliable.

My rear bumper stretched enough with a 1.5" BL.

I messed with trying to install my front bumper for like 45 minutes until I wised up and mounted it a set of holes higher up. Its basically being held on by 4 bolts now instead of 8 but I'm not worried.

For what it's worth I wasn't able to substantiate this claim through some quick research after I read it yesterday. Every machine I've ever designed incorporates a metal battery tray though usually sheet steel not aluminum and companies have been making metal battery trays forever. I would think that if this was an actual phenomena that it would be more common knowledge. I think automotive OEM's do it more for cost reasons than anything else.

Yes, they may have been leaking even a little before you lifted it and you just didn't notice. Might just be spinning them up at that higher static angle. Either way, push that boot back, clean the shaft well, and reclamp. Those will be fine.

Rear bumper never came off for my 1" body lift, just stretched it. Front came off to install body lift and went back on with the help of a friend, starting the bottom under the support and pulling up on the top to get it to clip in on the corners. It stretched and looks fine.

You are 100% correct! I looked at a "before lift" picture last night, and saw that there was some grease residue in the same spot. I guess those clamps just need a replacement. I ordered those clamps from McMaster yesterday, and luckily they are right here in Robbinsville, NJ, so I should see them here today.

Thanks again! You guys are schooling me up on this 4Runner fun quickly.

Several have said it already, yes it'll stretch, if it's warm... If it's below 50 where you are at it'll make it harder, before zero forget it till it's warm!

Sent from the drivers seat of my 05 4runner.

Galvanic corrosion occurs when 2 different metals are in direct contact. A steel washer against an aluminum plate, for example, will corrode quickly.

No metals really like battery acid, though. Battery trays are usually plastic because they don't react with spilled or seeping battery acid.

Using your aluminum cage would be fine, so long as it's isolated from the steel body of the 4Runner, with plastic or rubber bushings. I'd also recommend a plastic tray in the bottom to collect any spilled battery acid, like OEMs do.

Guys, how much oil do put into your V8 when it's time to change? I'm sick of reading the same threads with no clear conclusion. Some do 7 qts, some do 6.5, 6.2, and some do 6.

I've done 2 changes since owning the truck, and use 6.5 qts with a new filter. I feel it's the safest bet, but would like see what everyone else says.
