After using a regular old hooked winch today (and most other times I've used a winch) I actually thought about your sig with it. I'm sure they are better, but I was just wondering because of the price tag..
Certain things I don't worry about the price.

Fair, I just don't see the advantage of the thimble + shackle over hook + shackle.
Speaking of things where i'm not worrying about the price, I'm definitely getting a hi lift. I can't keep lugging my floor jack down the stairs (75 lbs down 3 flights sucks). I can use this for most of the stuff I need to do on my truck here (at school) coupled with my 6 ton stands. After using it on the trail today I think it's a pretty valuable recovery tool and will solve my dilemma - I was going to get a smaller floor jack, but it just didn't seem worth when the hi lift is 67 shipped prime on amazon and a little floor jack would be 40-50.

Spent $140 on the safety thimble with titanium pin only because they didn't have the steel pin one in stock. If you do decide to buy one the steel pin has the same tensile strength and extra $$ is not necessary.
I feel more confident and safe using the thimble+shackle in precarious situations along with my synthetic line. The safer I can be the better IMO so it's worth it.
Also planning on getting a hi lift... just waiting until I install a roof rack and rear bumper with a TC. Don't know if I'll mount it to the rack or bumper yet.

Broke in the new suspension teh right way.
Also broke some rear sway bar brackets and had to ghetto rig them to make it home.

well the thimble eliminates the weak gate found on hooks. I take it you haven't seen a hook stretch to the point of almost opening. After seeing a hook stretch almost open, seeing a traditional metal wire rope snap and almost taking someone out there are a few things i don't use. 1 is a traditional hook on the end of the winch line and 2nd is wire rope. I only use synthetic rope now. That line snapping scarred the S*^t out of me.

Took my 4Runner in for a check up. The doctors ended up admitting it to the truck hospital. Lots of numbers being thrown around. I'm scared.
