What did you do with your 4runner today?

Was able to change my 4runner today to configure it to one button to unlock all the doors at once instead of two presses on the remote.

Stupid dealership wanted $150 and said it probably wasn't doable. But hey, I was able to do it. lol

I spent hours and hours on this forum looking and googling and there wasn't a solution. Ended up all day twiddling and fiddling and learning to get it to work through trial and error. If you are good with novice electric work, you should be able to do it too. :lmao:

Maybe you can share your procedure? I would like to do that mod.

Any Avatar: TLA fans here? Only suitable for an off road vehicle!

Nice reverse light mod...I am assuming. Or just spot lights on a switch. Are they LED?

Shoutout to @TiN for the amazing retrofit kit along with superbrightLED 2" cubes, you can follow the guide here:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/188840-quick-easy-rear-bumper-led-cube-retrofit.html

for something similar.

Highly recommend using bondo after you get them and tons of primer, wet sand, before the final layer! Or if you're lazy get it painted from TiN too.

5th gen brakes

Started the process of painting the calipers. Later tonight I'll paint them with G2 caliper paint. Planning for a Sunday install.

Spraying them down the brake cleaner.

Finished the Boss kit install with Firestone 4107 airbags on the XREAS Limited '08 I bought last month. I thought about paying a shop but I'm glad I did it myself. I think I can do a better install, plus once it was on jackstands I saw every spot that could hold Western Colorado sand/silt was packed with it.

The frame rails were filled with sand/silt, I popped the garden hose with a pressure nozzle into various holes along the frame. Took about 3-4 hours to clean it all out. The beauty of an arid climate, though, is despite all that sand/silt the various bolts backed out without too much persuasion, some Kroil presoaking, an impact wrench on the larger bolts. The rear shock top nuts came out pretty easy, but that was because XREAS has the banjo bolts and I was able to wedge a crescent wrench handle in to prevent the shock body from turning while I had a 6-point 17mm boxend on the top nut.

Of course, heavy use of antiseize on the install, rattlecan painted the underside, eight aerosol cans of Fluid Film so far.

Next up is extended rear brake lines. The rear swaybar is removed and will stay removed, the airbags compensate for it. With the rear swaybar gone the driverside brakelines stretch to breaking point at full droop.

Picked up my 4Runner from the dealer. It only took over a week for a tire mount/balance. (don't ask how my dealer managed to screw up one of the wheels OR why it took them a week to get their act together)

New wheels are the SCS SR8's Bodymount is desperately needed, but otherwise I love them.

Truck looks great! I've been looking into that Prinsu rack for the past few weeks.

Nfab roof rack 5th gen

Installed Nfab roof rack and LED lights front & rear, easy install and multiple mounting options for lights, also no whistling at highway speeds. Others have claimed placing the light bar behind the sunroof would cause light to fill the cabin or excessive reflection. No issues at all with led bar behind the sunroof.

Looks good!

But FYI this is the 4th gen "what did you do today" thread.

You guys are killing me with those wheels......they look sick! Which tires did you go with and what size?

Shit

Not today, yesterday. Learned I have a leaking head gasket. Went it to have the water pump replaced and got the bad news. Oh well, going to take it to Big Bear this weekend and then have it fixed next week. Going to have them mill the heads, do the valves and replace everything they can while they're in there. At least I'll have a brand new(ish) top end, water pump, etc.

That's unlucky :( I was under the impression the 2006+ didn't have the HG issue.

What symptoms was it showing?

It was manufactured in November of 2005. I believe the updated head gaskets came a couple of months later.

It has just, like last week, started to be a tiny bit rough idling on start up. I also had the occasional "waterfall" sound on startup. Had no idea that was a symptom too. This guy had the same symptom:

When mine failed, I could hear coolant running through the heater core for the first couple of seconds after a cold start. It ended up that my head gasket leak was allowing exhaust gasses to build up in the cooling system. After it sat for a while, the air bubble would work it's way to the heater core creating a void that was quickly filled with coolant when the water pump started circulating coolant on a startup.

I actually took it to my mechanic buddy to replace the water pump which had started to weep. When he opened the radiator the fluid was low and it smelled strongly of gasoline.

It sucks, but I've decided I'm going whole hog on it. I'm getting everything that can be replaced/fixed done while he's in there. New water pump, belts, spark plugs, valves and valve seats done, machining both heads, replacing both head gaskets, etc. And since he has to pull the front diff, I'm having him flush that too and re-lube the front driveshafts. I'll basically have a new top end and new front of the rig. It'll probably end up around $4k, but then I can get another 200,000 miles out of it so it'll be worth it.
