What did you do with your 4runner today?

Added a Gear Shift knob.

150k service

  • replaced spark plugs with NGK IFR6T11
  • changed engine oil, filter (and washer)
  • changed diff and transfer case fluids (and washers)
  • cleaned air intake and MAF
  • regreased drive shaft
My trusted mechanic performed this service. Bummer: I'll need a new driver side CV shaft on account of outer boot failure -> ordered from CVJ Axles in Denver (with OEM boot option).

FYA, when I posted the image below on Instagram/FB, someone suggested switching to a Tesla...but those still have at least a diff and t-case...and can't go where the 4Runner can. Also FYA, when I replaced the wiper blades, the old one was about 4cm longer overall, maybe a 24". I had never noticed it sticking out.

Required fluids from Uncle W:

Someone got cheap and decided to do all their shopping all at Wal-mart. lol. I guess everyones preference is different.

Severely worn may be an understatement, did you check the gap. looks to be more than twice if not three times the normal gap?

I just measured one and it came at around 1.9mm which is almost 2x spec. No idea how the engine was still running, with good mpg even!

Put over 300 miles on mine trying to find one for my daughter. Did not find one. Two V-6's I looked at had clear signs of head gasket leaks.

Still looking . . .

Love the color, how much did that run you if you dont mind?

Too much to justify! Vandalism, warrantied previous fixes and a great body shop made it happen. Funny how things work sometimes Making lemonade over here! Call your local shop and they'll give you a ballpark.

SO my blasted rear hatch was not working again. so I decided to finally put in the new hatch motor. now it works smoothly as intended.

I also put in my own cold air intake system. I found out it was way too fast for my liking because it seems that I like to put my foot down on the accelerator more than the brakes. I was hoping for a modest improvement, but it was a huge improvement. I needed a 4runner, not a LamboRunner. lol. So back the old cold air intake system it goes!

You cant be serious....

so...what intake was this? v6 or v8?

It is V8. Here was the issue, since i dont know jack about air intakes. I thought it would be easy to make my own, hoping for the modest boost everyone else had when they bought theirs. It worked, but it had its issues.

Problem was the check engine light was on because of the mass air flow sensor. I used the largest air filter i can put on it, so it was taking up alot of air causing the CEL. What usually would take an engine to reach 5,000 rpm before you end up in the RED and rocking the car and risk blowing up the engine now does it at 3,000 rpm since it takes more air in. If i press too long on the accelerator, car ends up shaking. 4runner was so speedy, it felt like i was driving a different car with turbo. was so fun testing it.

So i ended up putting the old one back, a little too dangerous since i can go quick in no time and have to watch my RPM. Cost me $80 vs the $299 to experiment. lol. Probably could have fixed the issue and ran a smaller filter so i didn't have the "go too fast , too quick" issue.

Yes. I was serious.

I ended up cleaning up the throttle body, MAF sensor, and seafoaming it for those little improvements instead.

From what I've read it's good oil but once you start using it you can't switch because it swells your seals and when you switch you start getting leaks.

Out of curiosity does anyone run Mobil one High mileage oil?

Ive used it, never had an issue.. I usually get the extended 15k mobile 1 synthetic and change it at regular 5k intervals using Genuine toyota oil filters only. The mobile 1 cost the same as the others if you get it at walmart so no added expense. If they are out of stock, ill run regular mobile 1 synthetic too.
