TRANSMISSION COOLER INSTALL

So I took the 4runner on a 8-hour trip to go skiing with my family and 7 hours into it, the transmission decided to start overheating frequently. So that led to me getting a Hayden 679 transmission cooler to install. Went pretty smoothly, and the trans temp has definitely improved a ton. Very useful mod.

I didn't regear when I got 35s so that's most likely why I was having overheating issues. Would highly recommend this mod to anyone

Finally got around to installing my RCI full front, transmission, transfer-case, cross-member, fuel tank, rear differential, and A-arm skid plates. Basically everything but the kitchen sink. :whoo:

They definitely make quality stuff. I ordered the front in powder coated aluminum during the last group buy since my truck didn’t have the factory skid when I bought it. Also got the bumper filler, which is a nice perk over the factory setup. I plan to add pieces every time they run a group buy, or sale since I couldn’t justify buying the whole deal like you did at once with mostly street use at this point.

This is on my list of mods I need to do...31.6" LT's overheated mine when I bombed up a paved mountain road and didn't put it in a certain gear (so it shifted tons).

Would definitely recommend also swapping out the fluid since it's likely toast after overheating. Mine smelled super burnt after overheating twice (the other time was from backing up a steep, rocky hill for ~1/4 mile)

Sort of successful map light mod...help?

Did the maplight mod so they come on when the door opens but lost most of the juice to the middle dome in the process—-far rear still bright. Used a quicksplice on drivers side windshield column to tie in.

Appreciate any insight...

Since I'm at 182,xxx miles I didn't want to do a full flush of the system for fear of losing clutch material and making matters worse. It turns out my trans fluid level was already lower than it should've been so I added fluid for that and fluid to account for the extra capacity gained by adding the cooler. I think I added ~2 quarts total and did not remove any existing fluid.

Might want to check that the connections are solid. That quick splice might have a lot of resistance. Possibly swap to LEDs so that they draw less?

Gotcha, that could've been part of the reason it got too hot, as well.

You can always just do a few pan drain/fills with a couple hundred miles between. I've heard that's the best path for higher mileage trucks (and is what I'm in the process of doing on mine at 185k).

That sounds like what I might do, but still worried about making things worse. So far I've had no issues with it and done and few 3-hour trips and the temps stayed 150-180 the entire time so I may just run it as is for awhile

Glad they're staying low. The added fluid probably helped.

As a side note, what're you using to monitor temps? I have an OBD-II bluetooth reader and torque and hooked it up for sh*ts and giggles but couldn't find a trans temp reading.

As a side note, what're you using to monitor temps? I have an OBD-II bluetooth reader and torque and hooked it up for sh*ts and giggles but couldn't find a trans temp reading.

I've got a scangauge 2 that'll read the trans temp once you add in some codes manually. The codes are on a thread floating around here so just do a quick search and you should be able to find it. I dont know where in the system it reads the temperature from but it still gives you an estimate of what temps its getting to. It's really interesting to see how allowing it to shift/not shift on different types of terrain changes the temp

Not sure how to do anything about the connection now that it’s already been spliced once—-not sure how I might re-splice.

You can usually pop those quick-splices open (assuming I'm thinking of the right thing) and solidify the connection. Would be best to solder it, though.

Maybe grab a tester and check resistances at different parts? I'm not super familiar with the mod (though I'm hoping to do it myself) but hopefully someone else who's done it can chime in. Or maybe someone else has had that issue

looks mean - did you have to alter a lot of mounting points to get this to fit or does it bolt up pretty easily?

I had to shim it so that the hood would close. It wasn't too bad, just a pain taking it on and off because of the weight.
