What did you do with your 4runner today?

Added a front camera.

Just wondering, Why would you want or need a front facing camera? does it record all the time?

Doesn’t record. I installed it for use when going offroad and I’m coming up on a crest. The camera was cheap ($20 on Amazon) and install was relatively easy since my head unit has an extra video input. I figured why not.

This is probably something I'll look at doing in the near future. Well done!

I probably should but I didn't think of that until you mentioned it just now so I don't have the parts to do that on hand. I'll have to see if I can get them from the local Toyota dealer today, otherwise it will have to wait. Trying to get this all completed this weekend if at all possible.

Intake is built and ready to go on. Valve covers are cleaned and painted, just waiting for the bolt grommets to arrive today since I forgot to order those originally. Going to work on getting the timing belt replaced today.

Weight difference between the aluminum intake and the plastic intake: about 12.5lbs. Doesn't sound like a lot but it's very noticeable when you pick each one up. 31.7 for the aluminum and 19.1 for the plastic. Will it make a difference in the big picture on the truck? No, not really but it's nice to know it lost a little bit of weight :thumb:

Please do a separate thread when you get this finished. The TB looks quite a bit different. Are you concerned about getting the electrical connectors and vacuum hookups right? How hard was it to remove the intake and valve covers? I’d like to take mine apart JUST to clean and paint them, but it seemed like it would be a hassle so I haven’t gotten around to it yet.

Hey guys, I just started using this forum and I had a couple questions. I just bought a 2004 SR5 2WD V6. I was just wondering how difficult it was to swap the 4.7 v8 into it. I have a wrecked 2007 V8 4WD (so I have the engine, ecu, and any other parts I might need). My dad and I will be doing the swap ourselves. That being said, here are my questions.

1. Besides the engine itself, what will I need to swap over from the V8?

2. Will the 2WD transmission from the V6 bolt up the the V8?

3. If I have to use the transmission from the V8, can I remove the front driveshafts until I can do the full 4WD conversion?

Like I said, I already have the parts to swap. I just don't know what my options are or which route to take. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated!

COVID isolation DIY

Taking the opportunity during the pandemic to upgrade the 4Runner stereo. So far, I’ve replaced the front and rear door speakers, already sounding better!
Next up is the head unit. I’m looking to get out of the 2008 navi and install something more modern and useful. I have a snazzy Kenwood ready to go.
After that, maybe the subwoofer and some sound deadening

Are those Dobinson coilovers? Also, details on the brake setup..

Just normal Dobinsons stuff, non-adjsutable struts and springs but in black and red. JBA UCAs.

Brakes are stock (Sport) sized Centric rotors with Akebono ASP pads all around. Added the Spidertrax 1.5" spacers as well.

Looks clean, I have a set of Dobinson coilovers that I love (picture in my build thread, they look like yours).

I'll put together a write up after I drive it for a bit and can give feedback on the changes.

All electrical connections are the same, no changes there at all. Vacuum connections are also the same, just moved a little. There are 2 extra vacuum ports that need to be plugged tho.

Valve covers and intake are pretty easy to do, just takes a little time and patience. Pull the intake before you pull the valve covers tho, keeps crap from falling onto the valves. Make sure you have new gaskets on hand before you do anything. Don't reuse the old gaskets, you will have leaks.

Got it all buttoned up this evening. Runs great but I haven't driven it yet. Found a small coolant leak at the back of the engine coming from the coolant by-pass manifold. New manifold on order so the truck remains down until that is repaired. Hopefully next weekend depending on how long it takes for the parts to arrive. I'm going to drain some coolant and start pulling the intake back off so I can replace that by-pass manifold. No way around it unfortunately.

Nice! For those other 2 vac connectors, are you just going to tee off of one of the existing lines? As for that coolant bypass, do you suspect that it got damaged during disassembly, or was it something attached to the “new” manifold that you didn’t realize was cracked? I’ll definitely be looking forward to hearing your feedback on this project!

The vacuum connections are the same as original. One is for the PCV valve (yes, that's a vacuum connection) and the other is the one that runs to the power steering solenoid on the power steering pump. That connection is normally at the top rear of the intake on the aluminum intake; with the plastic intake, it moves to the underside, up front. The 2 remaining, unused vacuum ports can be capped off or just run a hose between them which is what I did for now since I was out of vacuum caps.

The coolant by-pass was my mistake. It's the stock coolant by-pass manifold at the back of the block that the heater core lines attach to. I thought it was in the way when I was installing the plastic manifold and managed to crack the coolant tube that is press fit into the by-pass manifold from the factory. You can't order just that tube so I had to order a complete by-pass manifold to be able to complete the repair. Hopefully be able to do it next weekend, depending on how long it takes to get the parts.

I am mostly jealous that your metal components are black and not orange

I have my UCA and Bilsteins ready to go on. I'm going to start soaking all the corroded nuts and bolts for a week.

That’s life in Texas for ya.

Didn’t stop my LCAs from being frozen doe...

rchang0101 yeah, why a forward facing camera?

I've learned to keep my head forward to see forward :biggrin2:

I know we're joking a little here, but...

Have you ever wanted to pull up closer to a parking spot or into your garage but just had to trust your instincts on how close you were? Ever wanted to make sure you weren't about to high-center on a rock or were on the correct line on a trail? Going steep uphill and following a dirt path means next to zero forward visibility because your windshield only shows you the sky.

The new Jeep Rubicons come with a front-facing trail camera from the factory. Visibility is visibility.
