transfer case

Removed the front driveshaft (it snapped at the yoke) and rear driveshaft, got the transfer case all unbolted, and getting ready to lower it out of the truck.

Headlight restoration

Nice I did mine recently too. I sanded them down to 800 grit then hit them with 2K clear coat lol. Same clear coat used on car bodies. Should last a long time!

I see a lot of headlights using reflector housings for the highs, despite having projector lenses for the lows. Is there an advantage to doing it this way?

03-05 is reflector 06-09 is projector. That's why you see reflectors

In reality its just cost. The GX470 has both projectors for highs and lows, you see the 03-05 4runners have projector fogs and reflector highs/lows, and the 06-09 4runners have projector lows but reflector fogs and highs.

From a technical standpoint, projectors can make better use of the light passing through them, but reflectors will be more efficient and less effective, because no piece of glass is 100% transparent. Every element between the source of light and the ‘viewer’ reduces the amount of light getting to them. This is true for cameras and headlights, but back to reality, and your question, its just cost.

I like the projectors way more than the reflectors. I think the projectors work better, look better, and and take led bulbs better. I want to do the 06+ headlight and trim and tail light swap on my 04 when I have the cash for it, that way I’ll have projector fogs and low beams, the OEM LED tails are just because I think they look cool.

So my T4R had a DIY double DIN head unit installed by the owner-before-last and there are still some kinks to work out. The first thing I fixed on my runner truck was the 12V outlet. It was not working at all. Both the ACC fuse and CIG fuse checked good. Lo and behold, I popped the top off the console, and the outlet was just unplugged. I found out the other day however, that the center diff lock was not working. I feared that it was the actuator, which I have read on this forum that replacing the actuator is a $2500 repair. However my 4HI and 4LO work just fine. I popped the lower dash off real quick tonight, and was happy to find that the button was not plugged in. It appears as though when the owner before last installed the double din, they were in a hurry to get it back together, as you'd think the 12V outlet and the center diff lock would be features you would want to retain. I'm just happy it was a $0 fix and not a $2500 fix!:biggrin2:

Knocked off a couple minor items off the bucket list.
Replaced the sideview mirror switch and some broken clips that hold the outer trim on the doors.

Installed this backup camera yesterday in anticipation of replacing the OEM head unit when I replace the evaporator core. No idea on longevity, but install was straight-forward and it looks OEM.

While waiting on Denso/Sony parts, I wanted to get the pain of routing wires around the back window and into the cabin out of the way and it didn't disappoint. I also proactively ran wiring for LED hatch lights once I get around to it, will captured details when I do.

Some install notes:

• Since the replacement head unit hasn't shipped yet (bought this just-released Sony unit), I verified camera operation and placement using a 9V battery and spare TV. Worked like a charm.
• For running the wires from the hatch to the cabin via the rubber grommet, liquid dish soap and water was a game-changer.
• This seems obvious but check rear-window clearance before you button it all back up.
• I noticed evidence of water infiltration into the hatch and will be replacing the hatch window weatherstripping to help prevent a larger issue.

I was gonna document the backup camera install process for a how-to but found that it's been covered fairly thoroughly. That said, if anyone is interested, happy to pull one together for this camera.

I finally had some FREE TIME to replace the door lock actuator replaced in my drivers door and program the new key fobs programmed that have the key that flips out from the side. I've only had this 4Runner a few days and the PO didn't have the a key fob for it. Funny how something so small can be so important when you no longer have it, lol!!!! I also got a new set of pistol magnets that I have used in my other vehicles installed in the new 4Runner. Yes, I live in a state that allows law abiding citizens to protect themselves with a concealed firearm if the need were to happen. I refuse to live in any place that took that away from me. The last item I did today was to install a new set of license plate LED lights. These things are brighter than the reverse lights and I love them.

Today I finally got my license plates in, which means no stupid piece or paper on the back window! Also gave it a good wash from our weekend trip to the WA coast. First trip a success!

Replaced the plastic cover for the speedometer cluster. Mine was a bit scratched up from past attempts to clean it.

I did find that the tabs on the cover are a bit brittle and accidentally broke one while attempting to press the cover back in. Fortunately the rest held it in pretty well.
