What did you do with your classic T4R today?

Removed the lower part of the front bumper and hammered the pinch welds to fit the 33s stock height. Now just waiting on factory rear coils to bring the back end up.

Replaced the ratty old muffler with a Flow-master 40 series, I love it, the neighbors no so much. Not sure if I am going to keep it or not, I took "them " off my 71 chevy due to complaints but I just had to see and hear what the toy sounded like with it ( only one ) loved it, gives it a deep throaty sound.

Nice! Write-up? What header? How much? Easy install? Results?

LC engineering header was about $430 shipped. Install was really easy, about an hour, but I have 2 stripped studs in the head (they just spin). Going to helicoil those this weekend. I did have to remove the heat shield above the torsion bar and next to the a-arm to get the header in. Waiting on a muffler so just running the straight header.

Also get the block off plates, this is the 2nd time that the stock manifold didn't have removable ones

Looking At suspension bits to start replacing the lowly stock (ish) suspension on there now.

It needs:
4 New Shocks
Rear springs for sure, probably doing front as well


Questions:
For shocks I was looking at the billistein 4600's, I drive a lot of washboard dirt roads and this thing won't be going crawling or anything. I was looking at getting a 2in lift on it since I'm replacing everything. Will the 4600's be good for two inches of lift? What other shocks would you guys recommend? (staying away from Procomp/Rancho/Ruff Country/cheap auto-parts store shocks) I looked at Ironman shocks that my buddy has on his 100 series and they have shocks for the non-us 4Runner. Would these fit the US 4Runner too?

For the front lift, can I just do springs and new OME torsion bars without the BJ drop? I have never worked with a BJ drop before so I'm wary of throwing one in. It seems to be the most popular lift for these trucks though.

It's going to have 31's on it for the foreseeable future so I won't have issues clearing tires but if I'm replacing the suspension I mine as well lift it now.

Personally, I think the 4600s are to short. I know some others who love them though.. I would recommend the kyb monomax made for 0 to 2 inch lift, ome shocks should be a great choice as well. I have kybs now with bj spacers and they're great. For the rear I would do new springs and 5100s. The ome torsion bars may right pretty rough up front with no additional weight from like a bumper or winch or something. Btw I love my ball joint spacers and factory v6 torsion bars. And I'm sorry I haven't heard anything about the iron man shocks but I think if it's for a pre 2004 hilux, it should be the same hi trac ifs as our trucks.

Conversion housings are plug and play, just like replacing sealed beams. The challenge is having to remove the grille.
However, H4 coversion harness is a MORE ESSENTIAL upgrade. Google "convoluted wiring 4crawler".

Replaced my flow-master 40 yesterday. The UPS truck pulled up in the driveway and left a stock toyota muffler and tail pipe, thanks to the wife. She said we will just have problems with the neighbors again if I leave the flowmaster on it. I hate to say she is right, damn I liked that exhaust sound. So I spent a couple of hours removing and installing the exhaust system, now it sounds like a stock Toyota, damn neighbors.

Thanks for the info. My headlights are next to useless. The runner just became my daily since I moved back to the "big city" from a one stoplight town. It will be the next upgrade so I can actually safely drive at night.

'68 Camaro horn on my '84 4Runner

My horn on my first gen 4runner recently gave out, didn't know why at first so I did some digging. Found out that the contact pin was way worn down and the spring was gone.





So I picked up a new pin and spring assembly straight from toyota. (wasn't able to do that .22 casing trick as I don't have any ammunition.)





Replaced the pin, that little clip was a PITA to get back on.





Got everything back together and horn worked!





But since the stock Toyota horn has no nuts I figured I'd give this a shot! A 1968 Chevy Camaro horn.





Long story short, got it working by sending it constant power and a selective ground when the stock horn button is pressed. (Toyota horns are weird)




Sounds a lot better than that little wimpy Toyota horn, and fit nicely behind the grill! Works with the stock horn button.

Had a blast but the truck needs shocks, ordered 4 bili 4600's last night should be here Wednesday. The hankooks are getting swapped out next weekend for the 31in Falken Wildpeaks I have on the XJ currently to get some more traction.

Bilistein 4600's going on tonight. Those upper bolts in the rear are going to be a PITA.

I also looked at the spare, how is that held on with that spring contraption? I've never seen that before (off to google).

Front install complete, what a difference. Got too late to throw the rears in, hopefully it stops snowing and warms up so I can get them in this weekend.
