What do you think about the quality, gas mileage and price of the 4Runner?

Hello everyone, we have rented a 4Runner SR5 2019 model for a week and it was great. Then, I have started to check the vehicle and I found these rusty screws which are for the seat railing frame, pls. take a look at the attached pic. After checking it I was thinking to purchase this vehicle... Is the 4Runner really 40.000.00 worth it?

Cons

1 - Bad gas mileage
2 - Less accessories
3 - Inner rusty screws (2019 old vehicle?!)
4 - Deck lid trunk starts rusting (2019 old vehicle?!) See pic

Pros.

1 - Very strong engine
2 - Driver cabin well isolated noise wise.
3 - Good steering quicker than our Soccer Mom's Van Chrysler Town and Country 2016 model
4 - For tall people like me 6'6 easy climbing perfect for the knees and back.
5 - Seats kind of comfy
6 - Good cargo space
7 - Robust inner turning knobs
5 - Factory mounted hitch

What is your opinion about it? Feel free to share your thoughts.

If youre looking for a true truck suv its a great vehicle. Underpowered, crappy technology, bad gas mileage…and itll last forever. Awesome (little) depreciation and low maintenance with great reliability. Not a great tow vehicle for larger items. If you want features look at a Lexus 470 V8 for $75k+.

Those here on the forum will most swear by the 4runner in that isnt anything like it, thats “affordable”. The new Bronco may be close, as the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The lack of features makes room for so much versatility. If youre going to seriously off road, seriously camp, or seriously drive one as a commuter its a great option. If you like cush or quiet ride that accelerates fast or gets good mileage…the 4runner isnt for you.

Im on my second 4runner due to common rust issues from lack of washing (1st NJ owner) and I bough new now. Ill drive it for the next 15 years as my only vehicle.

If you don’t plan on going off-road or long trips on unpaved forest roads - look at the Highlander.

Im on my second 4runner. First was a 97. Tough as nails and easy to work on, low tech; it was a great.
Now in a 2012. Gas mileage still sucks, but, it seems just as well built as my 97. I’ll do a few maintenance things to it this year ( its my first year with it ) and then likely leave it alone.
Drives much better than the van I had, less room inside and worse gas mileage, but I prefer the stiffer ride and being back in a Toyota.

Guess I like it because I bought a TRD Pro a few months ago. Pros and Cons are different for each of us.

Cons: Poor gas mileage
Adaptive cruise control is nice but a bit clunky. Still love it for long hwy drones.

Pros: Simplicity and reliability.
Very good off road. Not Jeep or Land Rover or future Bronco level but good enough for my needs.
Now has CarPlay.
Decent tongue weight and towing limit. Enough for my needs.
Versatile and comfortable. Did a long haul single day drive and it was fine.
Overall good build quality.
Not that expensive to insure.
Versatile and spacious without being huge.

I had a '97. Sold it and got a new 5th gen awhile back. The 5th gen is bigger, 1k lbs heavier, and has more power, but averages just about the same MPG as the old '97.

I live where they use tons of salt in the winter. 22+ years and the '97 wasn't rusty. The new one isn't rusty either. I wash them as often as necessary in winter, to get the salt off.

The rental 5th gen looks used and abused, and put away wet. It's just representative of neglect, and careless damage where the paint was scraped off, and subsequently started to rust.

Only had our 2019 for about a month. Taking it up on some mountain roads in about an hour or two.

Gas mileage: We are moving up from a 2005 Exterra and a 2005 Frontier with 20 mpg (both v6s). My rig is a '69 FJ40 with a Chevy 350. Gas mileage is more like 10-13 mpg.

Have had 1/2 dozen Toyota trucks, including an '83 FJ40. Went to Nissan because of price!

BTW: Jeep Cherokee is the absolute WORST car we have ever had. First year it cost more to repair than the payments totaled.

I was impressed with how well 4Runners are built the first time I crawled under it!

Haven't taken it off road yet; might get into some snow later this AM.

Can’t speak for that vehicle but as far as the 4 runner generally I’d say it’s the last evolution of a real light duty 4x4. The gas mileage is poor compared to a sedan but 20plus is amazing for a body on frame 4K lb vehicle. Besides, I’d happily trade some efficiency for the reliability that the 4.0 is known for.

Learned that fit and finish =/= quality or reliability.

Doors may sound a bit hollow but the cabin is crypt quiet with zero creaks. And I’m coming from a full size Range Rover with acoustic glass.

You can listen to luxury car doors “thunk” all day long in Rovers, BMW, and Mercedes but I wouldn’t trust a new one on a cross country trip!

4Runner is where it’s at. Big, Fisher-Price controls and dead reliable tested platform. 4.0 V6 and a 5 speed trans.

The 4 runner is the best new car I have ever bought in my life. It’s well worth the $40k! Mpg maybe crappy but if you want good mpg, go get a Prius!

Yeah - I think it looks like a flood vehicle. There shouldn't be any rust on interior hardware. Mine has none at all. Even my 1990's 4runner interior hardware never had any visible rust after 30 years. This is unusual.

Well, stock it gets bad mileage...

I drive to Tucson about once or twice a month from Buckeye Arizona... and when i drive my 4Runner I arrive in Tucson w around 1/4 of a tank left and need to fill up so I have gas to make it back home. I like to take my wifes car because she gets much better gas mileage than my car, its a new Toyota Corolla and it has a smaller tank but gets great mileage.

I just added a new exhaust system on my 4Runner and I honestly cant believe the improvement in mileage,... i can make it round trip to Tucson on a single tank of gas and have 50 miles to spare. I cant do that with my wifes Corolla.

Quite literally...INSANE. Probably due to the damn car not changing for over a decade and other models like the FJ/GX able to share certain parts.
