what exhaust system might this be? I cant imagine an exhaust system improving anything other than noise. Now if your y-pipe and cats were deleted in the process that might make more sense.

I’ve owned quite a few 1980’s 4runners and actually was driving an 87 4runner when I bought my 2021 TRD Offroad,I have owned mostly Toyota’s my adult life so I was biased but I looked around and researched and always came back to the 4Runner,I wanted utter reliability and quality more than fuel mileage or all the gadgets ,I realized the 4.0/auto combo was ancient but extremely reliable so that trumped anything else ,I’m happy with my decision

Phx to Tuscon and back with gas to spare. With stock exhaust I had to fill up in Tuscon because I was at a quarter of a tank left.
Not really...JEEP on the other hand there is an INSANE amount.

I wanted the loudest exhaust, so I got the flowmaster... I didnt think the gas mileage would improve as much as it did. But like i said, twice a month I drive to Tuscon and I KNOW what kind of mileage I was getting stock. After I put on the exhaust I can make it there and back on the same tank of gas.
Take a look at the difference between the stock and the flowmaster muffler.
If you want a quieter exhaust look elsewhere and I cant guarantee the same mileage result from another brand.

Been about 3 months and love the 4Runner! Have added roof basket, traction mats, shovel, Hella off-road lights, bull bar and side rails to our 2019 SR5.
We solved the mileage problem by buying the wife a RAV4 for shorter, on-road trips.

Who cares about fuel mileage? Adjusted for inflation, gas is cheap.

19 MPG now ... not sure what it was before exactly.
But I said...
STOCK: Phx to Tuscon before I had a quarter of a tank once i reached Tuscon and had to fill up in order to make it back w a quarter of a tank left.
Now I can go there and back and still have about 50 miles before empty.
Bought it due its excellent reliability, durability and longevity. No surprises there right? What would improve it IMO: solid front axle, better approach, departure and break over angles. Also making it more utility oriented, less fluff for Millenials, removable doors and top. Not enough anchoring points inside. Great vehicle for what it is but NOT a Jeep Rubicon contender, but then again neither is the new Bronco! Toyota needs to LISTEN to its 4X4 customers. I am quite sure the 6th Gen will be of less quality, durability and possible capability too than our current 5th gens. This may be the last Toyota 4X4 I own. Upside is it will probably make our 5th gens very desireable as a used 4x4, improving resale even more.

As someone who grew up with a disdain for such a pedestrian car, I would take major offense to the Camry comparison if you didn’t add the “4x4” distinction lol.
Also, I want to counter a CON by arguing that with such a ubiquitous platform, the aftermarket parts are as expensive as you want them to be.
i just like it the way it is. for as long as it does not get me stranded in the mountains, i'm good.
i hope they could add a manual start, just like when you have a manual shift. if you ran out of battery, you can just push start it.
i remember when i was younger, when my dad's car don't start because of the dead battery, we just push start it and still can go.

Just averaged 21 MPG on a 550 mile trip.
Bought with 50k miles, now has 152k. Never left me stranded which is important because sometimes I am 9 hours from home. Basic maintenance only but add in the NSS and 2 front calipers.
Quality is fantastic, as is reliability. Some of the other guys talk about solid axles and removable tops and such, but I like mine the way it is. I have a JK on 37's for that.
It's my work road trip vehicle. The ground clearance and the real 4wd help in the NE, but the frame rust doesn't, and I wash the undercarriage every chance I get. My frame is still decent but I have no doubt that would go before the engine or trans or electrical systems do.
All in all, when it's time to replace I'll either buy another 5th gen or a GX460.
It has plenty of power if you put your foot in it. I work in the auto industry and the first time my old boss rode in it and I got on it he goes "Oh wow it has a V8 too?"

Bought new with 5 miles. 18.0 MPG over 2000 miles driven since then. Gas is cheaper being able to use regular grade so that’s a relief.
4Runner is living proof that doors don’t have to be heavy for the cabin to be quiet. It may clang like a tin can when the door handle is released, but the inside is rattle free and quiet as a crypt.

No sense in Dynamat or further damping the panels because it’s already as quiet as my Range Rover with acoustic glass. I’m not tearing into a new vehicle because of “perception” of quality (heavy, dampened doors)
It’s the perfect size for my wife and I, rides like a lifted truck (short wheelbase?) and is overall so fun as a daily driver.

YES!!!! Quality of Japan made Toyota from the Tahara plant is unbeatable! Let’s hope 6th Gen will come out of same plant in Tahara
Coming from a 15 GX 460 with a Dobinson lift, we absolutely love our 21 TRD Off Road Premium. We do miss some of the safety features such as the parking sensors but we will manage. Love that it uses regular gas and is very comfortable for us.
We have zero regrets and fully expect this made in Japan vehicle to be very reliable for a long time to come.

Quality of the drive train and the other bits that actually count seems to be
quite high. These particular Toyota's are still made in Japan and it shows.
The paint, the electronics and amount/quality of other features(infotainment/NAV/automatic climate control(lack there of unless you go TRD Pro or Limited)/BLIS/Radar cruise/LED lighting/etc) ... for what you are paying for this thing is kind of terrible frankly.(I have an ORP Premium and it was not exactly cheap.)
I don't mind and even like the 4.0 but the ancient 5-speed feels like a slight knowing that the Tundra/Tacoma and GX all get six gears and they ain't exactly brand new models... also a little salty about not having the V8 option.

I get 18 in town and I have 275 BFG's E-rated(55lbs per tire) with a 3" lift. I got less in my Jeep Wranlger which had similar power and weighed less. No complaints here.

4runner is not a good value proposition in any trim. So if you want value and economy, the Rav-4 or Highlander are way better choices.
I bought a 4runner for the proven reliability and the platform(body-on-frame) because I knew that I wanted something capable offroad(former Jeep owner) and mod-friendly....but also still livable day to day. The 4runner is really good at weekend warrior stuff and pretty cushy Mon-Fri.
