what does SR5 mean?

Hey, does the 4runner come in different versions? How come some are listed as "SR5 4x4" and others only as just "4x4"

Is there anyway to tell which models have sideair bags? Someone posted that all 4runners come standard with side airbags but I dont believe this is true.

Also, is there any way to tell if a 4runner comes with a hitch? Is this standard on the SR5?

Lastly, if I am looking to get a pre-owned certified 2003 v6 with under 50,000 miles, what do you think is the absolute most i should pay? Do you think I could talk them down to anything below 19,000?

sr stands for sports rally. it's a base trim in latest gen of toyota 4runner. it's not a special 4x4 if that's your question.

afaik, the 05 sr5 4wd all come with hitch standard. this could have chgd in '06 model year.

side airbags aren't std yet for this suv, it should be, imho.

I have a friend who owned a 1980 Toyota Corolla SR5.

It seems the "SR5" designation has been around for quite a while in the Toyota model lineup.

yes it has been around for many years. the early 4runner sr5s weren't the base trim as it's today, if i remember correctly.

base means the lowest (pricewise) model, most basic model. sr5 has no relevance. like i said, it used to be sr5 were the better models many years ago.

In the latter part of the 1970's, the SR5 connotation denoted an option code for the HiLux series of trucks, similar to what the Z71 option code currently means for an upgraded Chevy or GMC pickup or Tahoe/Yukon. Originally released around 1975, the 'S' denoted Sport, 'R' denoted the RN motor code, and '5' denoted the 5-speed transmission. It quickly caught on and the SR5 connotation passed onto the Corolla and then onto other Toyota car models.

Regarding your question on the positioning of the SR5, it depends on the generation. The current model starts with the SR5 V6 2WD as the lowest cost model. It shares the same V6 and V8 engines as the Sport Edition and Limited, as well as the standard STAR safety systems and optional side/curtain airbag package.

The only major item (IMHO) not available on the SR5 is the XREAS suspension (standard on the Sport, optional on the Limited).

If I recall correctly, the previous generation (up to maybe 2001 or 2002) had a "base" model with a 4-cylinder engine (and black door handles and mirrors). The V6 engine came with the SR5 model, which was, of course, more expensive.

As far as I know, the only way to know if a 4Runner is equipped with the side/curtain airbag option (other than checking the options column on the sticker) is to look for the little "airbag" tag on the front seats, or the curtain "airbag" tag on the interior A and C pillars.

I would bet an o3 is right around 20?

I would love to get 21 -23 in a year when I sell my o4. I will be gutted if offered any thing under 20 when I trade it in.

NOTE: I am not a pro just guessing from experience.

what ya think? Ever wonder what it's worth if you think about selling? The bigger question would be what' next?

Assuming you want and SR5 4X4, that is probably a reasonable price from an owner. If you really want it certified from the dealer, I would guess more like $22-24K. Not an expert either. I just know a lot of people who have bought 4Runners over the last 3 years.
 
According to Kelley Blue Book's website (www.kbb.com), a 2wd '03 SR5 with 47k miles and standard features lists for a retail value of $21,600. This fluctuates based on where you are in the country since they ask for your zip code when calculating the value.

Retail value is what the dealer will try to get from a customer when selling a used vehicle. Kelley Blue Book also lists trade in values and private party values. Trade in value is pretty obvious...it's what you can expect the dealer to give you if you were trading in that exact model for something else.

Private Party value is what might be negotiated between you and I if I were buying the vehicle from you. My wife and I just sold our '03 Tacoma and got the Private Party value for it. In the case of the '03 4Runner, this value comes to $18,950 in my area.

I've read that the best way to negotiate with car dealers is to bargain up from the private party value, not down from the retail value. So if you can get them to deal for you, expect to pay somewhere in between 18.9 and 21.6. Good luck!

Before buying pre-owned you should really shop around for a 2005 leftover. Last November I bought my 2004 and saved a LOT of $$$$ due to the year end mark-down and the Toyota cash back.

BTW, in order to find a decent selection of year end leftovers you need to go to a high volume Toyota dealer. Last year I visited two local Toyota dealers (one small, one large). The small one had ZERO leftovers. The large one had 8-10 leftover 4runners.
Not sure if it is true or not but I was told (at the large dealer) that Toyota sends the leftover models to their high volume dealers and provides financial assistance for marked down prices.

Personally, if I could spend $2-3K more for a new 2005 with 0 miles and a full factory warranty I would take it over a 2003 with ~50K miles and a certified warranty. The money you might have to spend on maintenance items (brakes, tires, etc) on the 2003 could easily eat up the savings of buying pre-owned versus new.
 
Just as a point of note : When I was shopping for my 4Runner, I was originally thinking of getting a used one (03 or 04). The problem was that they were hard to find, and expensive. These vehicles retains their values much better than most other vehicles. That being said, I found that it wasn't too much more expensive to just go with a brand new vehicle that I could break in myself without having to worry about what a previous owner did to it. If you can find a brand new 05 still on a lot, you could probably get a very good deal on it.
