what essential survival gear do you keep in your Runner?

My long trip gear is packed separately at home.
I always carry the following:
- Emergency Kit (alcohol pads, scissors, bandage, band aid, flares, jump cables)
- Windshield washer fluid
- Toyota Pre-mixed Coolant
- Portable 50-piece toolset
- Box of Kleenex tissue
- 2 flashlights
- Auto Fire extinguisher
- 2 twin size warm blankets
- 2 medium towels
- a case of bottled water
- a few magazines
- cellphone charger
- garmin charger
- gum
- bottle of Captain Morgan (unopened still in paper bag)

In case i get stranded in Denver, i'd pray and hope Courtney or any of the Denver peeps would stop by and let me sleep in their place before i check in to some hotel/motel. :biggrin2:

I do keep some recovery gear in my 4Runner at all times. I have a recovery strap and a hitch shackle. I don't really consider that survival gear though...I keep it there to help other people stuck in snow. I've used it every winter without fail. I pulled a kid in an Explorer out of a ditch just last week. He was screwing around on a side road and slid into a drainage ditch and got completely stuck. Instead of calling a tow truck, he was trying to flag down anyone that could help pull him out, so I stopped and gave him a little help.

I'm not sure why you guys need all this stuff, or would want it. Do you all live in a rural town where it's several miles to gas stations and supermarkets? Can't you just call a friend to pick you up if the 4Runner breaks down for whatever reason, instead of hiking? What could possible happen where you would need a sleeping bag, 5lbs of food, and 3 flashlights? I'm confused.

For myself its the concept of being prepared. I hope I have this bag and the suff in it forever and never need it. Especially the anti-radiation pills, but living near what seems to be the bulleye for all the terroists in the world ... an ounce of prevention.........

Haha....so you'll have a healthy thyroid gland! But, everything else...

Really, this is only helpful if you are a small child or have low Iodine counts....or unless you are REALLY close to where a nuclear reaction occurs (Chernoble, for example)....

This is a great thread - As an Eagle Scout, I should "Be Prepared" at all times. I'm in AZ, so a "Bug Out" situation is not as likely here as along a major fault line, in Tornado Alley, or in hurricane territory.

Not that you'd want to keep it in the vehicle, but if it was truly a bug-out situation, extra fuel cans (kept full), a firearm (rifle, shotgun, handgun), and extra ammo would sure be helpful, as well as a stash of emergency funds in cash ($200-300 or so).

I mean, now we're getting into the Mad Max scenario.

great thread! I don't have much, just some basic recovery stuff required for beach driving and off roading at sanctioned parks, but I'd like to have a decent survival kit in my truck.

I guess I wouldn't "survive" long, in the winter I keep 2 coats with gloves in the pockets. In the summer I keep a bottle of water. That's about it other than a couple band aids and eye drops.
