what exhaust are you running and why?

ya maybe he'll chime in here. i had a civic that i put bigger pipes on and did a cat back exhaust and it lost some high end power. low end was ok but ya no turbo lol of course it was only a 4 banger too so i know thats different

ha im trying to figure out how you switch your exhaust just like that! does the jardine just bolt on? anyway ya that exhaust should show better performance after you get your supercharger on. i think the headers should help out too.
I think a lot of us have talked about the pipe issue in some other threads but ya the muffler guy told me the stock pipes are some wierd name bend which is better than what their machine can do. I think with bigger piping it will mess up your back pressure unless your runnin a turbo or sc too.

i got flowmaster because its all my shop had. i got the cat-back system cause i though it looked cool and hadn't really seen any 4runners with it.

as far as performance? i dunno its still slow as hell so i doubt it helped or hurt really.

Stock exhaust for me. It still has a nice rumble, but no drone at any rpm. I noticed NO performance gain when I tried out the Magnaflow with stock pipes and I LOST low end torque when I had custom mandrel bent 2.5" OD pipes with that Magnaflow. I even tried the 18" and 22" Magnaflow ovals and although the 22" was considerably less noisy, it still bugged me when going up any slight incline (drone).

In the end all that the Magnaflow got me was a noisy vehicle, and in my opinion, the V6 just doesn't sound all that great after months of noise. I went to the Toyota dealership and I only paid about $145 CAD for the whole mid-pipe which includes the muffler.

ya its just bolt on. 4 bolts 4 rubber hangers and 15 minutes to swap out exhaust. I've done it so much I've got it down to a science.

The Jardine sound AMAZING! A friend of mine used to have a 4runner and he had the TRD cat back on it, then he gave it to me when he sold it cause they werent gonna give him anything extra for it (lame) and he still had his stock pipes so he just gave it to me. I ran the TRD exhaust for about 4 months then I sold it because, A) I got $1000 for it that is spent on my engine B) I read about 50 reviews from a bunch of different websites that said the Thorley-Jardine system was much better. And if anyone is thinking of chiming in about Borla, thats what the TRD system is, is a Borla with a TRD logo on it and a 100% increase in price. I personally like the sound of the Jardine system over the TRD/Borla. I think its much throatier and sounds much more angry. The TRD/Bolra sounds smoother and more ricy.

The sound of the Dynomax does sound pretty ricy but with an opened up intake the opened up exhaust deffinately makes a difference but also, I really dont want to put that gigantic stock muffler back in.

The only other mufflers I've heard on 4runner are the Vortex, Magnaflow and Flowmaster. In my opinion the Vortex by far sounds better than any of the mufflers I've heard. The Magnaflow sound stupid, like its trying to make a V6 sound like a V8 and it ends up sounding like :FOS: The Flowmaster, to me, sounds the riciest of them all and I would put the Dynomax between the Flowmaster and the Vortex. So, hope that helps if anyones has been wondering.

So here, to sum it all up, heres my best to worst (sound) chart:

1: Thorley-Jardine system
2: TRD/Borla system
3: Cherrybomb Vortex
4: Dynomax Turbo 2
5: Flowmaster
6: Stock
20: Magnaflow (I think anything would sound better)

Haha I agree. Exhaust only works to its full potential if you have force induction or a high compression ratio.

just got my cherry bomb vortex installed today and I gotta say it sounds pretty bad a$$

its not too loud yet you know its there.

i bought it cuz i wanted something a lil more <b>"ROOOOAR"</b> than stock but not something obnoxious. lol. its too early to really tell, but i've gone 20 miles today and so far i love it! =)

Im sorry I souldnt say its ricy. Its just ricier than the Vortex. Arent you running a full flowmaster system though? cause if you are that will make a difference compared to stock pipes.

BTW: The Tundra resonance silencer accomplishes one thing:

Eliminates the vibrating hummm while driving at low RPMs such as 70 on the freeway. With the flowmaster it sounds great but there is a humming noise in the cab that is really annoying whenever you are not wheeling. I do not know if the full cat-back systems like Borla have it but I suspect they do as well.
In 2008 I became so annoyed with this noise that I put the factory exhaust back on and instantly suffered a power-loss. Right away I put a new flowmaster on but the truck shop added a feature for free - a factory Tundra resonance silencer - this was welded in line with the exhaust. This allowed for the high airflow && AWESOME SOUND but also eliminated the low RPM humm.​

My TRD catback system has some type of resonance silencer a couple feet from the tailpipe:

Same thing as what you did?

I don't know but it sure looks like one. Perhaps the TRD (& maybe Borla) exhaust already has one in line.

I know for sure that with just a flowmaster you really notice a difference when adding the resonance silencer.

BTW that is a really nice TIP. I bought a cheap tip and regret it since it has turned yellow.

looking at picking up the thorley jardine catback but can't find it anywhere online. when to urd but there is nothing listed for the 3rd gen 4runner specifically. is it the 00-04 tacoma one? any help would be greatly appreciated.
