Not to bring up this old thread but, i run 87 and it seems fine on mine, on a side note, i dropped in a bottle of Redline Fuel system cleaner and have gotten a considerable better fuel milage, last tank went 419miles on a V8 with 19.4 gallons of 87 + Redline fuel system cleaner. Its a nice jump from the usual 370-380 miles i been getting in around the same 19-20 gallons of 87.

"Knocking" is a term used to describe the sound you here when your engine suffers from predetonation (unintended firing of the mixture in the cylinder before the spark plug fires.) It's also sometimes called "pinging" and it can sound like a dozen BBs rattling in an empty soda can.

Either way, you'll most likely NEVER hear it in your 4Runner engine because of the knock sensors. They will recognize any potential knocking and retard the timing a few degrees to get rid of it and protect your engine from any potential damage.
 
the other day I got the best mileage yet: 23.8 @ 27!
Thats mostly city, some highway, sea level, 93 octane. I love my truck ;-)

My friend with an 04 taco gets much less MPG with his v6, i just chuckle at him.
Do you always mmix octanes?
 
I have been alternating 87/93 for a few tanks since the price difference hasn't been huge.

I was pretty happy with ~24 mpg. I wonder if it will get better with age?

I'm sure it will go down with a Kayak on top...

Yeah man, Im always stoked to see anything 23mpg and up, technology is great!
Speaking of kayaks, I wathced a video lastnight on youtube of a guy at a surfbreak I like on the caribe side of costa rica and there was some guy out there charging in a kayak! The wave/break is notoriously heavy, very shallow reef and the wave jacks up VERY fast, but regardless this dude was getting into the barrel and coming out! if you'd like to see it just do a search on youtube for 'salsa brava kayak'
 
This topic has my intrest as well.

I normally just run 87 octane in mine and dont have any complaints so far. I wonder why with the flex fuel being avaliable they didnt offer that option for the newer 4runners. Have any of you run it out of curiosity? I thinks its atleast .30 cents cheaper than 87 here. Then again its 105 octane so that may be the reason for not using it.

I run 93 in my explorer because it has a superchip installed and wouldnt mind running that in the 4runner if the computer would tune for it and i may could gain some power.
 
The rims on my 4Runner were definitely not a waste, judging by the heads I turn on the road and all the compliments I've gotten over the years.
 
It's his truck, so don't worry about it. And that has no relevance to this thread whatsoever.

BTW: 89 or 91 octane here, I switch back and forth for no apparent reason sometimes. :D
 
You're absolutely right. And it's my truck as well which I choose to put 93 octane in. I don't feel like it's any more of a waste than a set of 22 inch wheels. Just my $.02

lol, the only vehicle we own that my dad puts 93 in, is his 06 911 porsche. As high as gas prices are these days I'm suprised anyone would put 93 in there vehicle, unless the manual absolutely required it to be used.
