I know whatcha mean. I had an Audi A4 before my T4R and that thing needed premium or atleast mid-grade. So I am just accustomed to putting in the more expensive stuff. I don't really see myself changing anytime soon. We'll see what happens.
 
Well the difference between 87 and 91 (southern cali only goes up to 91) is $0.20 per gallon. So every 5 gallons is an extra $1. That means in a 4runner the MOST you can pay extra compared to 87 is about $4. Most people don't mind an extra couple dollars for the better fuel.

When gas prices go up, people start to use lower octanes because they get pissed about the prices, but don't realize that it is STILL only a few bucks more for the higher octane, even though prices might have gone up 30 cents.
 
Me neither. If $3 or $4 is that big of a deal then maybe a 4runner wasn't the most economical vehicle to choose. Take a day off from fast food or something to make up for the difference......
 
Yea, seriously. I love the people who will spend a decent amount of $ on a vehicle and then cheap out on gas to save a few bucks a month. I guess some people feel that if it's not really necessary, then why do it. But for me, I'm a worry wart, so I would rather shell out and extra 10 dollars a month or so to avoid potential problems in the future. I'd hate to find out one day that my engine is messed up because I was using cheap gas the whole time.
 
Using 87 in a 4Runner isan't really going to hurt it, because that's what the manual says to use for my 02 at least.. lol Now for the 07-08 4Runner's I'm not sure, it may suggest using 89 but I wouldn't think so. Now if you want to talk about hurting an engine put some 87 in a porsche, ferrari, lambo, or somethin like that.. as for the 4Runner I don't think it makes that big of a difference what type of fuel you use.
 
with 10:1 compression there is no need for anything higher than 87....if it makes you feel better go ahead....because it's labeled "premium" doesn't mean its better for a low compression engine, it just cost more.


....it just burns differently....
 
Oh this poor horse, we just can't let him alone... ;)

Just made a trip in the 03' T4R V6. Houston to Virginia Beach towing a 3400 lb Buick on a 16' trailer. Started off with 87 octane. was getting 11 mpg (per my calculations). Switched to 93 on the third fill up... MPG went up to 14 and i had a noticible increase in performance.

I think there's no doubt that our ECM's utilize the higher octane fuel when the engine is under load... But I also agree that during day to day driving, you're not going to notice a difference.

As someone stated earlier... the only way to really solve this riddle is for someone to pony up the money and throw their T4R on a dyno and post the results. Any voulenteers? I'm too cheap to do it. I'm happy just running 87 day to day and 93 when I'm towing, or racing... but really....how many of us have our T4R's at the track?

Well like I said above, you can't use "poor" as an excuse. You're telling me you can't afford an extra 3-4 dollars for a full fill-up? If a few dollars is so much to you, then why did you get a 4runner? Just curious.....
 
Ok let's say you fill up your 4Runner once a week, and your using 93 instead of 87. Ok so your spending an extra.. let's say $5 a week to use 93. That's $20 a month, and $240 a year. And if you've been doing that for 5 years, that's $1200 wasted.. lol no thank you!!!!
 
2004 V8 running 87 octane California formulation. Usually use Chevron, Exxon, Mobil, or Shell. Do my best against petroleum price gouging by shopping around and buying at the lowest possible price. Getting 19-20mpg city/highway

Okay so here's 4 items. Fast food, liquor, cigarettes, and pot (marijuana). You spend money on one or more of these, without any doubt. Factor that into your little equation and see how much you will save. I guarantee it will be a lot more than $3-$4 a week for higher octane.
 
Ok I don't drink, smoke cigarettes, or weed. And you need food to survive.. I'd rather not starve. I'm sure there's something more useful out there I could find to waste my money on than higher octane gas. I'm driving a 4Runner not a porsche, so I'll stick with 87. :bigok:
 
Yeah i understand. I never said you needed anything more than 87, just that you can't blame a budget on not forking out a few bucks for something. People on budgets need to look for bigger things like fast food, their expensive frappy coffee sh*t that they drink every morning, smoking, etc. There's a lot of wasted money in todays world.
 
Yeah I know what you mean man, people waste thousands of dollars each year on cigarettes and for what? lol to die sooner than others. To experience a slow painfull death in agony. If only we could put all of the wasted money in the world to something good...
 
The point is that 91 is not better for your engine and 87 doesnt do the engine any harm. The only time I can justify using 91 octane is when I tow or carry a heavy load. Beside Shell gas, which has more cleaning additives in their 93 octane, most other premium gas has the same amount of additives as the regular gas and have no added benefit except for a little bit more torque which you probably would not notice under normal driving conditions.
 
I always run 93 octane in my 04 se V8, I have no choice with the supercharger and won't consider anything less! I use 87 octane in my 07 corolla and I run 93 octaine in my motorcycle, it's great on gas and I notice better performance with it having 11.5:1 compression ratio.
 
Anyone in CO use 85 Octane

87 octane on 2004 V6.

Colorado actually has 85 octane too, although I don't use it (manual says 87 or higher).

Anyone ever used 85?
