Almost all cars use four-stroke gasoline engines. One of the strokes is the compression stroke, where the engine compresses a cylinder-full of air and gas into a much smaller volume before igniting it with a spark plug. The amount of compression is called the compression ratio of the engine. A typical engine might have a compression ratio of 8-to-1.
The octane rating of gasoline tells you how much the fuel can be compressed before it spontaneously ignites. When gas ignites by compression rather than because of the spark from the spark plug, it causes knocking in the engine. Knocking can damage an engine, so it is not something you want to have happening. Lower-octane gas (like "regular" 87-octane gasoline) can handle the least amount of compression before igniting.

The compression ratio of your engine determines the octane rating of the gas you must use in the car. One way to increase the horsepower of an engine of a given displacement is to increase its compression ratio. So a "high-performance engine" has a higher compression ratio and requires higher-octane fuel. The advantage of a high compression ratio is that it gives your engine a higher horsepower rating for a given engine weight -- that is what makes the engine "high performance." The disadvantage is that the gasoline for your engine costs more.

The use of a higher octane fuel than required, is a twofold mistake. You are wasting money and can possibly do damage to the engine. Using a higher than require octane rated fuel will not increase performance, clean the engine, or offer any benefits whatsoever. If your engine was designed for 87 octane, then use only 87 octane. If it requires 91 octane, then by all means use 91 octane. The engineers who designed the engine know full well what octane fuel it needs. The octane rating of gasoline determines how much the fuel can be compressed before it spontaneously ignites. That is all it does! (Look in your vehicle's owner's manual for information about the octane requirements of your vehicle).

Now, some people believe that using higher octane fuel will clean out your engine. However, higher-octane fuel contains no more detergent than low-octane fuel. If you feel you need some extra cleaning, there are additives that you can get at the local auto shop, but do not use them too much or it will damage your fuel injectors.

First of all, using a high octane fuel absolutely will not damage your engine. That is completely ridiculous. That is like saying eating higher quality food will damage your stomach. Give me a break. However, if you do want a boost in power and fuel economy that will clean your engine and lubricate your cylinders, get some Lucas upper cylinder lubricant with injector cleaners. It will pay for itself in no time with fuel savings, and my 4.7L feels like it's running 93 octane when really it's running 87.

Just to add a bit about why higher compression gives better performance. A higher compression engine has a higher thermodynamic efficiency...that's why you can get more performance out or a higher compression engine. Consequently, a higher octane gas is required to cope with the higher compression properly.

I agree mostly with MikesToy in that owners of vehicles should use the recommended octane. I don't want to sound mean, but I'm sick people thinking that higher octane gas is somehow higher quality or higher performance. I've been reading some quotes like "Only the best for my truck...93 octane or higher", and I just laugh to myself. The use of a higher than necessary octane rating is just a huge waste of money. Also, I'm tired of the idea that 87 is a 'dirtier' gas than 91 or 93. 87 has just as many cleaning qualities as 91 or 93. My rant is over...

just following the manual. some of you guys treat your 4Runners like I do my Porsche 911! LOL porsche says put in premium so on that car i do, but costco regular for the 4runna.

no problems. smooth as silk v8.
 
I put in the cheapest gas I can possibly find, 87 in STL and KC, 85 when I go out to Colorado. On rare occasions I put in the high octane gas if and only if they are the same price, every now and again they make a mistake at the pump.
 
How about brands? Anyone experience differences?

I ask this because my Pathfinder 3.5 LE requires the 93 octane and I can verify reduced performance in lower octane fuels. I regularly drive 800 mile trips that require multiple fill ups w/ that vehicle and have personally seen a difference in MPG w/ Cheap fuel vs. Shell for example. I originally thought the ads were crap but after doing several of these 800 mile trips and hand calculating each tank of fuels MPG, the Shell 93 resulted in about 2-3 mpg higher vs. the "no namer" fuels.

I drove my 4 runner on this last run and didn't calculate the differences in "Gate" vs. Shell brands but my trip computer seemed to like the shell better.....we all know it's not right, but it did read higher non the less.

Anyone else have similar experiences but w/ their 4 runner? I'll be checking mine more closely on my next long trip in a few weeks......
 
Fuel

I use the lowest octane rating that DOES NOT have 10% ethanol. (usually turns out to be 91 octane premium)

The reason for this is ethanol contains half the stored energy of regular petroleum gasoline. With that in mind, burning a mix of 10% ethanol gasoline will net you about 5% worse MPG.

That and ethanol is a stupid band-aid for our current petroleum addiction.

It takes a ton of energy and gasoline to produce a gallon of ethanol (tractors burning gasoline, trucks burning gas hauling it because there is no dedicated nationwide pipeline...etc) and so I refuse to support the stupidity by buying it.

I'm not some tree-huggin hippie either, I bought a V8 4Runner cause I like power, I just think the whole ethanol argument is stupid.
