if you get the amsoil sever gear oil it has 100k mile interval. i changed it to amsoil from mobil 1 at 50k, i'll probably change it again around 125k miles.

I just changed mine out with Amsoil 75W-90 Severe Gear a couple weeks ago. Cost under $100 shipped for 7 qts and an hour of my time. I gave each diff a (expensive) flush of fresh fluid before I filled them up. Re-used my crush washers, no leaks. Much faster, almost instant shifting into 4LO now. Back when I had the V6 it would shift into 4HI faster too. I posted a thread observing some differences in fluid condition after 25-30K miles on the V6 vs V8.

That's a VERY interesting article. I can't believe Royal Purple scored so poorly considering how much it costs.
I guess I'm gonna go with Amsoil. Now, I just need to find a local place to get it.

I just changed out the rear diff, front diff, and transfer case last week. I used Royal Purple 75W-90, but only becasue I won it in a raffle last March at Megarun in Gilmer, Texas. Don't know if it is better than others or what, but like was said, you probably can't wrong on any of the name brand synthetics. My diff fluids were pretty clear from whatever was put in there before I bought it, but the TC oil was near black. One hint which I am sure the threads point out, is always remove the fill plugs first, and on the TC, when you remove the drain plug, the oil shoots out at about a 45 degree angle so make sure you have plenty of coverage with your drain pan.

I know this may sound dumb but I am going to try and change my 4Runners diff fluid for the first time. it is a 4th gen V-6 2wd. I have 3 quarts of royal purple rear end fluid. do i need 7 quarts?! how do i put the new fluid in? again this is the first time i change diff fluid on any car. i have changed oil and put on bolt on parts so im not totally lost any help would be great.

To the jacking question; vehicle must be level. Be safe!!! As for gear oil in front, rear, and center diff I will go with Amsoil severe gear 75w90 in my 2004 4runner. My dealership had me very confused over gear oils, would not even tell me what weight they use. I had a friend from another manufacturer's dealership contact a friend at another Toyota dealership to find out what they used. It was synthetic 75w90 in all 3. There is a TSB that calls for synthetic 75w85. Something to think about. I do not trust my dealership. I do go to parts for new crush washers and do fluid changes myself now. BTW, spec for fill is 0-5 mm from bottom of fill hole. After dealer service I checked on level surface; was not filled to specs. They said they were giving me a deal by only charging me for 2 quarts in rear. Capacity is 3.2 depending if LSD or not. Mine are open. Was PITA with dealership. Good luck yota friends
