What good is the Sliding Rear Cargo Deck?

It takes up valuable space and cost money ($350 list). As a practical matter, the buyer is often required to choose between it and the 3rd row seating.

I can see that it would be helpful for a large tailgate party since more people could gather around and reach the food and drinks.

The sales folks say that the sliding cargo deck makes it easier to load heavy objects, but that is difficult to visualize. Wouldn't lifting a heavy object be easier if you first balance it on the sizeable ledge formed by the bumper and then tip/slide the heavy object into the back of the 4Runner?

Do y'all use it? Is it easy to uninstall?

Lots of good for giving the little ones a place to enjoy lunch without getting dirty :hungry: Mine was also free :bluejump: Most of the remarks on this site are negative about it, but I am now accustomed to using it for loading and unloading and think it is a wonderful feature. The little height I lose mean nothing, because I would never pack the cargo area to the ceiling anyways.

I use its functionality some times,to sit on and load stuff.

When I'm out off roading and we stop to eat, assuming I don't have tons of cargo back there, I'll slide it out and sit down and eat. Of course a chair works too, but I often forget to bring one. :ybrick:

I haven't had to carry too many heavy objects, but having it slide out, you don't have to strain your back leaning over to lift stuff in. You can probably just use the bumper like you mentioned to slide stuff in, but I would prefer not to scuff the bumper up. It's all personal preference.

Oh yeah, with the slide out tray and the rear seats folded down, you have a flat platform for carrying larger items.

It's very easy to remove, a couple members have done it, and Harper did a write up a while back.

I use it everyday, love it. Great to Load heavy stuff in and not smack your bumper and scatch it all up I use it every time I go to the beach, when i go mountain biking and road riding, home depo/lowes runs Ect. I sit on it constantly and im very pleased to have it.

I actually found the "double decker" setup I had in my 4th gen to be a little better, because i could put my small dog's carrier on it and he could then "see out" thru the windows and remain secure. I could also load things under and keep things somewhat segregated. The tray is taking time to get used too. Granted, the double decker was prone to letting things "roll away" and didn't sit flush. With the backstop on the tray removed, it does make for a nice flat area. Overall, I can't complain. Would I have bought it as a seperate thing if not already installed? NO. Have I found ways to use it? Indeed I have. It's growing on me...

I can say that it works well for loading a full keg into the back. It makes it alot easier on the back not having to bend over.

I use it all the time. I used it a ton this fall for tailgating during football season. I also use it all the time when I go to the gun range or the farm for shooting. I never have to lean into the back to reach stuff/reload rifles/etc. For the 4 or whatever inches i lost in height in the cargo area I make up for it with ease and comfort. I have used the tray 100+ times in the half a year i've had the truck, and I have not once had something not fit because of the tray.. food for thought

Had my Limited since March, used it maybe a half dozen times. Found the best thing about it is not getting dirty if you're loading/unloading something....no leaning on the vehicle to reach.

Used the double decker system in my '03 about as much too.

it fits 10 bags of mulch perfectly!

Load it, slide it in.....

get home, slide it out, unload it...saves the back a bit.

IMO- it's good for shorter people & moms.

Pretty cool feature...I decided against it though.

I load mine with various gauge shotgun shells in containers when bird hunting. My 9 year old son and wife shoot 410 & 20, my 12 year old son and I shoot 12. When the birds are flying fast and you need to reload it makes it easy to replenish your vest with it extended.

Just like everything else, some find use and value in things and others don't . In my case what kind of midgets could you possibly stuff in a third row? It's not like the Runner is that spacious back there.

^^^ I'm interested in this too, I'd like to know if I can buy this from a dealership and install it in my Trail edition. I think the ease of loading would outweigh the loss of 4" of headspace.:rockon:

I removed mine from my 2013 Trail in order to get the extra storage space needed to get kids and all of their gear to college. I have all the pieces and parts sitting in my basement if anyone is interested, local pickup only as it looks like it would be a big job to ship. I'm in the Kansas City area.
