05, V8, 4x4 with 52K on it. Nothing was replaced except tires, engine oil (every 4k) and gear lube (ones). Truck is used for family trips (including off-road and ski trips), hunting, pulling boat, travel trailer and flatbed trailer. I had 2-nd and 3-rd generations before that and IMHO 4runner not just the most reliable SUV, but one of the most reliable vehicle on the road. No offense to “discovery” owners, but it is impossible to compare it to 4runner because as far as reliability “disco” is in complete opposite range of that scale: it is on the bottom. I also believe you will be surprised what 4-th gen 4runner can do off-road.

The current mileage on my T4R is about 139,000 km

I am not going to list any of the expected/anticipated replacement items that I have dealt with (e.g. oil, filters, fluids, lights, brake pads, tires, battery, timing belt, etc) that are associated with routine/scheduled maintenance.

Here are the unexpected issues that I have had and the items that have been replaced:

TSB #AC00303 HVAC Blower Motor Ice Build-Up - dealer installed the deflection kit as per TSB.

Replaced seized left brake caliper at 130,000 km.

Disabled Height Control (Rear Air Suspension) system at 131,000 km - one of the sensors had failed; too costly to repair.

Transfer Case Front Output Seal leak - replaced seal at 135,000 km.

TSB #EL001-05 A/C Relay failure - replaced with upgraded relay at 136,000 km.

XREAS suspension system failure (leak in the line behind the centre control absorber on the driver's side) - too expensive to repair XREAS; installed oem Toyota struts/shocks at 138,000 km.

So within the last 10,000 km that I have put on my T4R it is developing some significant (and costly) issues - specifically the fancy technology of height control and xreas failing.
 
05 V6 bought new ...Starter took a dump at 52,00 miles ..First toyota malfunction since I started buying them in 1982 was covered by warranty

Add to this CV boots on one side, and about to do lower ball joint boot on one side.
 
Driver's door exterior window trim piece, the rubber piece that covers the pinch weld. Vehicle is parked in the garage but it ripped along the seam. $15.

BTW I hate the oil filter location on these V8s. Engineers need to change their own oil.
 
As of this morning, 247968 miles on a 2003 SR5 4WD V6.

Replaced:
Console climate control (coke spilled into it)
Console climate control light bulbs on the replacement (bought a used junkyard part for $14.95 on ebay)

And some normal interval stuff
Oil (every 15k with Mobil 1 Synthetic Extended Performance)
Oil filters 15000 miles (usually FRAM, sometimes on-sale products)
Air filters
Spark plugs
Transmission fluid once at 150k
Tires
O2 sensors
Battery (after 6 years and about 220k)

Of course, that's with about 215-220k of that as highway miles and we don't get a lot of snow (and hence not a lot of salt).

That's excellent.

I'm especially intrigued by the transmission fluid history. (Was that a flush?) One change at 150k and still going strong. That's not even the "lifetime" fluid they went to a couple years later. Amazing.
 
One more thing - the bolt holes on an exhaust heat shield rusted out. My mechanic added some washers to keep it in place. The expensive part was the labor; he had to remove part of the exhaust system to get to the bolts.
 
I was driving back from Dallas this weekend, about 150 miles, and right as I pull into the driveway I hit 50,000mi on the dot! Other than oil filters and wiper blades, I haven't had to replace anything on my '04 SR5 V8.

I am at 79000 miles and the only thing that I have had to replace was my transmission. Other than having to keep up with my maintenance and such.
I know that in another 100000 miles it will still be running strong, 4r4l

I've had the left front wheel bearing replaced. The skid pads rusted to oblivion, so I went aftermarket for that. The rear 1/2 of the exhaust system had to be replaced (not the cat converter, thank goodness). I've replaced the tires early because I hated the OEM Dunlops. I had the rear hatch motor and strike plate replaced. I had the heater fan replaced. I had the timing belt service done as well (timing belt, water pump, drive belts, etc.).

As for bad gas mileage, mine is pretty horrible. I'm averaging around 15 mpg in my suburban/city commute. I might get 17-18 mpg on a clear highway with no stop-and-go.

In general, I think the reliability has been decent. The truck has never stranded me, but it hasn't exactly been cheap to maintain.

Am I am close to what he said. 92K miles, and had to put on 2 sets of brakes (1 set went quick due to frozen calipers in the front). On my 3rd set of tires as the OEM Dunflops were replaced with only 5k miles on them (they really were that bad)! Those are the only things I have had to do! I thought the front shocks were going, so replaced them with Bilsteins 5100 this past weekend.

FYI---I usually get 18mpg, with some tanks as high as 22.
 
Just hit 105K miles this morning on my way into work, so far I have replaced all of the cat converters and o2 sensors (under warranty thank god) I have also replaced the rear liftgate motor, front driver's side axle, and wearable parts like brakes, rotors, tires, wipers, headlight and fog bulbs.

Never ended up doing the boot as I wasn't sure what if anything was wrong. Now it turns out the lower driver side ball joint is worn. Just had it replaced today. Seems I am the only one with this issue.

Are the 4th gens less reliable than the older models?

IMHO no... Read about rear axle seals or front axle connect/disconnect on 3rd gens. Look at headgaskets on 1st&2nd gen V6s. The 4th gen is a significantly more complex vehicle. It has a few issues it shouldn't but in general I would say it's similar but different.

I have 50k miles on my 4Runner. Both front seats have been replaced and I recently had to replace the gas cap. The gas cap wasn't sealing properly and started throwing codes - the engine check light, VSC and one other light that I don't remember, so the dealer ran diagnostics and replaced the gas cap under the extended warranty.

I pretty much baby my truck. Oil changes with Mobil 1 synthetic oil. Wheels balanced and rotated every 5k miles. Tires aligned every 15k miles. Drive train lubed every 5k miles. front, rear and crankcase oil changed every 15k or so miles. Change filters ever 10k miles or so. It's pretty much spoiled. :bigok:
