What in the world is going on with T4R pricing? Especially on the forums??

Im in the process of selling our Mercedes and getting another Lexus or Toyota SUV. Everything I see on the forums has an asking price of $5k+ some even close to $10k over KBB/NADA value. On top of that most of the build lists Im seeing have aftermarket wheels and a stereo and are considered "built." Is this a joke? Is there money and gold hidden inside these vehicles? :wacko:

I have a feeling most of these arent actually selling for or even getting much interest at these prices but who knows? If people are actually paying these prices I need to sell both of my 4Runners, reap the profits, and maybe even send the original sellers some money because I feel like I stole them for what I paid.

So is overpaying for Toyotas the new normal?

I think when people are inpatient, it will lead to overpayment for a 4Runner. Couple that with only this and the Wrangler as the last BOF mid-size SUVs in North America, leaves us with seller's market.

I would not trust what someone posted here to be an actual barometer for pricing without evidence.
Do your best to make a deal and be done with it.

well I can ask to sell my car, or house for a million dollars, but it's value is what someone will actually pay for it. I am an MBCA member... seems like you'll know what that is. ever look in the Star Magazine for a car? I have a theory. goes something like this. "oh ok, ok, yes dear I'll sell my car. Yup, I'm posting it up online right now. Sure sweetie as soon as it sells we can redo the kitchen"


Months later... "I don't know what the issue is honey, it's totally worth more than I'm selling it for, I've got a couple of calls and offers but I'm not going to budge on the price, oh well, I'll just keep it for now I suppose."

Motivated sellers know what their car is worth and know what it needs to sell for to move it inside of 30 days and price accordingly. the rest... maybe they don't really want to sell their car that bad. I had a guy ask me if I was interested in selling my 560SL once while I was filling up at a gas station, I said sure, $50,000.00 cash and I'll run home and get the title for you. he rolled his eyes got in his car and drove away.

We all know patience is a virtue. It took me over a year to find my 4th gen, couldnt agree on price, another year later he still had it sitting in his garage and I got it for less than my original offer. Waited over 2 years to find my 3rd gen and made numerous offers over a year or so before I finally got it. Guess Im back in hunt mod.

I like all the wife theories and believe you all have likely hit the nail on the head for the most part. I guess mine leaves me be and just rolls her eyes when something else shows up in the driveway.... but this is going to be her vehicle so shes pushing me to hurry up LOL

The prices may be a little exaggerated, but T4R's are bringing a premium price maybe due to high demand for a vehicle in this niche market.

We just traded in our 2008 SR5 4x4 on a new 2018 4Runner. Our truck was listed for sale at the dealership the next day. It was gone by the next day. They gave us $10,500 on the trade and listed it for $16,995. It had been in an accident before we bought it used, but only had 79k original miles when we let it go.

So, I’m just saying these trucks are highly sought after and yes, maybe people are getting the price they are demanding. *

1999 Manual SR5 - going rate?

I have a manual 1999 SR5 in fantastic condition with full maintenance records and no rust, and a recent full inspection/tighten. Any idea what this would bring in today's market? I have a buyer and am trying to suss out the market value. Thanks - Erik

Judging by demand alone 4x4 4runners are and probably will continue to pull a premium on the resale market. I'll admit some listings I look at are a bit ridiculous, ie. trucks with trail damage, rusted frames, and like you said a new set of wheels and they are asking 5k over what they bought it for. But it seems like out west or even southeast can barely keep a 4x4 4runner on the lot for more than a day before they are bought. All the better for us owners I guess but I would not want to be looking to buy right now.

4Runners are not really worth buying used unless they're 4+ years old with significant mileage.
