What is a 5th gen without.....

It is more than the fact of it having two wheels (3 1/2?) spinning. I could take my camaro I use to have with a detroit locker in the back and even if it had mud tires, the thing I am sure would not do worth a damn compared to a 4r off road.

Even a 2wd truck, with a spool in the back, kind of sucks for off roading, but great for fast mud running.

Having power applied to the front, even if one wheel, is a great asset for off roading. So it is not about having two or 3 1/2 tires turing, but where the tires are turning.

Look at fwd cars, they have better traction than rwd cars in adverse weather conditions. Same one tire turning, but location matters.
 
The comment on this thread was done a year before I even thought of opening my own company. To answer your question, no I do not talk to customers this way, the lack of knowledge and a good resource in the community is one of the reasons we opened.

Finding shops that are knowledgeable and willing to help the Toyota community are hard to find sometimes(around here especially). Around here if you don't drive American trucks or suvs shops won't hardly touch it, or even worse mess something up trying to work on it.

The OP even admits that it was a stupid question, even before I posted. Thus, me joking with what I said. I know finding tone in text is very hard, but if you knew me personally, you would know being mean is not me. Im sorry what I said not directed towards you offended you enough to bring up an old thread.

Just and FYI related to this thread. I don't think most people understand how open diffs really work. Open Diffs do not apply power to one wheel (even though that is sometimes how it appears). They apply equal tq to each wheel on the axle. However, when one wheel goes off the ground or ends up on really slick ground it will end up with all the power (that is what equal torque results in... 0 tq since one wheel has no resistance) . So.. if both tires on the axle have equal traction, both tires/axles will get equal power. Open diffs perform great until one wheel has enough torque to overcome kinetic friction and begins to spin or is off the ground (another reason why suspension travel is so key to offroad capability)

ATRAC/brake activated limited slip attempts to work with open diffs to keep wheel speeds somewhat equal. The downside is that it alternates power between wheels when one starts to spin. Some of the power gets consumed by the brakes and the results can be somewhat unpredictable and a bit out of control. It gets the job done in most cases (not all). Bottom line, equal torque is still being applied to both axles, but the brakes are consuming some of it.

You can manually do this yourself to some extent with 2 foot driving, but the ABS pump and speed sensors get to control individual brakes. A really cool offroad feature for advanced rigs is the ability to manually control individual brakes. The concept is called cutting brakes. Very common on tractors... and very high end offroad rigs. Lots of cool stuff you can do.

Mechanical lockers mean unequal torque across the axles with constant wheel speed. This is a very good thing in rock crawling situations, but can also put a lot of stress on the drive-line since one wheel can end up moving the full weight of the vehicle.. Combine that with torque multiplication of low range and there are some serious load potentials...

You just have to understand all the physics... Lockers can make up for a poor suspension.... Suspension and tires can make up for no mechanical lockers... It's a constantly changing puzzle and no single solution does it all.
