What is included in each package?

Totally new here. I'm looking to buy a used 5th gen 4 runner. I had a 3rd gen years ago and think I'm coming back.

I have several different ones I'm looking at. My main use for this vehicle is carrying around my motorcycles (enduro and trials) and mountain bikes. I will mainly use it on the weekends. I do lots of stuff offload, but I really don't need 4 wheel drive, although it might be nice to have. Most of the roads I encounter in the vehicle are just simple dirt roads.

Anyway, trying to decide what I want and the packages have me a little confused.

I'm looking at:
a 2WD Sport: not sure what is included the sport package. Does anyone know?
a 4WD SR5: do any of them have locking diffs or are they all the same
a 4WD trail: I assume this has a locking diff and some other 4wd modes.

Also, the 4wd SR5 I'm looking at has running boards on it. I hate the way they look on the truck. Can those be removed without leaving behind any paint problems...

Most of these have about 50k on the OD. Any known issues I should look for?

How big of a tire can be run on these without rub or lift?

Your resale is probably going to be better and easier on a 4WD than a 2WD if that's a consideration for you.

Depends on location as well. My 2wd sr5 in Georgia was more favorable than a 4wd and I could have sold it for 17-19 for a 5 yr old. Instead I sold it in Colorado and I got 13,000. Personally I love the 4wd over 2wd having owned both and wouldn't go back.

There is no Sport Package for the 5th Gen. Only SR5, Trail and Limited. Then with the 2014, the SR5 Premium and Trail Premium.

By the amount of people that have running boards for sale in the Wanted/For-sale thread, It's safe to assume that they can be removed. Most would not remove them if they caused any kind of damage to their new truck. No, they do not cause damage unless someone caused damage while removing them due to carelessness or negligence.

What's your plan when you say "carrying around my motorcycles..."?

A hitch carrier for "one" bike at a time. I also own a full size 2014 GMC truck that my wife drives that I will use when I need to carry more than one bike. I'm looking at a 4 runner because I don't have room for two full size trucks and she really likes driving the big truck. I keep using it on the weekends now and she complains a lot and it turns into a :boxer:

My bikes are pretty light, so I'm assuming the 500lb tongue weight is sufficient. The enduro is about 230lbs the trials will be about 150lbs (I actually don't have a trials bike at the moment).

I agree that it seems like the sport package did not exist on 5th gens. But it keeps listing that way on several of the carfax reports....

Look in top left corner. It does not list this way on all of them. The dealers will list this as the package, so I'm wondering what it means.

A few more questions. I found one 2010 trail edition in my price range that is not too far away.

Do they all have the KDSS and other 4wd options.


And I found this SR5 4x4 that is lifted. Anything jump out as a concern with the way it is lifted....I'm clueless when it comes to offload stuff. I've built race motors, but never worked on a 4x4.

As accurate as I'm sure CarFax is, how about you consult the actual Toyota website. You can see for yourself that there is no Sport Package.

As I'm sure your research has turned up. The SR5 stands for
S- Sport
R- is the RN code for the motor ( or it use to be)
5- 5Speed tranny

I know some believe the R is for Rally, but I'm under the impression that information is inaccurate. However, I've been wrong before. Maybe the SR5 is just now catchy, so they stick with it. Either way, I know that there is NOT a Sport Package for the 5th gen, again, despite what the reliable CarFax states. You could say the SR5 is a Sport due to the "S" Trim Package, but it is SR5.

I figured out what the deal was. Carfax just tires to guess at the package based on some of the installed options. The sport package is just artifact in there system from the fourth gen. They are trying to list what package it could be, not what it actually is.

Some dealers add to the confusion by marketing the truck with this info. I've now ran across a few 4x4 SR5s listed as trail because the carfax report will say trail/sr5/limited.

Anyway, that seems to be where the confusion comes from. Sorry for the diversion.

The 4th gen 4RNNER had the "Sport Edition" model that is called/replaced by the Trail model for our 5th gen 4RNNER (SR5 the "base" model; Limited the luxury model and Sport/Trail the "offroad" model)
