What is so bad about the stock Dunlops?

OK now Boston Runner has kept up with the slamming of Dunflops, lets keep them coming.

Boston 4Runner has the leading intro to a massive petition against Toyota with these tires!
On all my previous vehicles I put the best tires I could afford (even when I couldnt affored them!) Now I am trying to be mature and money conscious by waiting for the Dumflops to wear out. I shudder to think how new my truck is going to feel with new shoes in a few months.

If you really want to show of the superior track qualities of Dumflops you run them at recommended pressure of 2.6 (I think) and throw it into a corner a couple of times, that way you dont have to turn the tires around if you dont like the white writing, because it scrapes off nice and clean, they roll over like sausages!

Not the mention how the steering shakes when hit a pothole or bump in the road as the tires shimmer themselves straight again.

I dunno how most of you drive but the tires ain't that bad! They ain't that good either, granted, but what do you expect for cheapo stock tires? For the price we pay for our T4Rs, Toyota's gotta skimp somewhere.

nothing is bad about these tires

just check the threads every few thousand miles.

it not that bad at all, for a stock tire. but as soon as i feel that my dunlops doesnt perform as expected or needs a replacement, then i'll change it with something better.


use them till their thread life.

I've never had Dunlops, but based on past experience I can echo a couple of sentiments that have been expressed here.

If you're happy with the tires you've got and they're working for you, then don't worry about it.

But, as soon as you begin to lose confidence in them in certain driving conditions (like rain or snow), it's time to change. Don't wait for them to wear out - change them right away, or at least before the next rainy/snowy season. If you wait, you won't get as much enjoyment out of the truck as you should, and it's silly to get frustrated with a vehicle that costs tens of thousands of dollars over a $600 set of tires.

On a couple of previous cars I've owned, the OEM tires were OK for the first couple of years, but it was amazing how much the ride and handling improved after switching to a better set of tires. It was like having a new car!

The wet weather is what scares me the most with these Dunlops. I'm a pilot so maybe I'm just overly sensitive to seat-of-the-pants sensations while driving, but any amount of puddling on the road erodes any confidence I have in the truck. I feel like it's all up to me to keep the thing out of the ditch.

Someone else also mentioned the weak sidewalls - you can definitely feel them when cornering hard and hitting a bridge expansion joint or something similar in the road.

So between the poor wet road performance & the weak sidewalls, I'm ready for a new set of tires. I only have 15k on these currently though, so I plan to give them a little more time.

Mine are at 26k and almost totally bald, I'll need a new set of tires before this winter. THAT is totally unacceptable. The exact same thing happened to my shitty stock jeep tires (goodyear), except that I took my jeep offroad.

If you like hydroplaning in your 4R, then the dunlops are for you. You'll get them worn down to the point of doing that all the time alot sooner than with other tires.

I have 28K and still have 1/3 tread left. That is acceptable.

I have found them to be acceptable and have bought a used set from a member here to replace them when they do give out.

I've had 45K miles on these Dunlops and thought about replacing them months earlier....but so far, I'm holding out for now.

The only upside is that these Dunlops are not that bad for the price you are getting, so maybe Toyota had to save a few dollars there.

But I'm definitely going to change them very soon - not now but soon. The treads are still there but slowly disappearing. And I've rotated them at the required intervals (every 5K).

My Dunlops were HORRIBLE in the snow last year, and they are almost worn out after only 26000 miles.....Im going to get new ones before the winter

I think all Sport Editions come with Dunlops. SR5s may have Dunlops or Bridgestones. '06 Limiteds with the 18" wheels will have Bridgestones or Michelins.
