What is the electric motor that runs on startup doing?

2002 Sport.

When I start it up, and sometimes when coming to a stop, there's an electric motor running on the driver's side. Sounds like it's pretty much right in front of me.

Recently in addition to the normal motor sounds I've been hearing a rhythmic buzzing as well. Similar sound, about the same volume, just going bzzz ----- bzzz ----- bzzz.

Kind of like whatever the electric motor is trying to move, it might not want to move.

Today I got a new sound. The last bzzz before the motor stopped was instead a VERY loud screeching sound. Like I just ran over a bobcat's tail and he was not happy about it. As loud as a smoke detector going full blast. Coming from the same place, driver's side, sounded like just the other side of the console.

So, yeah, what the hell?

Been there since you got the truck?
Hmmm... brake booster runs on vacuum, unless the new models use a pump.
 
Great, so the pump is dying.

Or maybe low fluid level? Have to check.

Is it possible to replace just the pump or do you just do the whole unit?
 
read in Yotatech that it is normal to hear a buzzing sound from the integrated MC from time to time. however, i don't know how it sounds when it's defective.

I also read that it's expensive to replace because it's the whole assembly. dunno if it's possible to replace just the pump

Quick google search shows about $1500 for the whole assembly.

Guess I will be rebuilding it, or see if I can find one off a wreck.

I like the truck, but I am getting sick of the monthly "surprises".
 
I just had to replace mine a few months ago. I kept getting all of the ABS/VSC/TRAC lights and alarm on but only when it was below freezing at startup, and I'd get the "bobcat tail" screeches every now and then. Bought a used one off ebay (part no. 47050-35010) for $400 or so with $100 rebate if I sent them my old one (I'm guessing they just rebuild them). Dealer quoted $3k just for the part. Held up so far, but we'll see once the winter gets here.
 
Getting a rebuilt OEM unit seems like a good route [MENTION=154827]bigtooona[/MENTION] I wonder what they replace, and what parts they use.
What kind of warranty do they offer?
[MENTION=120497]WallyWest[/MENTION] I would sell you mine, but at 223k miles, I'm not sure I would really feel confident it won't go tits up in the near future.

$400 sounds better than $1500, but still.

I'll update this later if I find some other great solution, or figure out how to replace just the pump. I may check out the local junk yard. Have to pull the parts yourself, but the guys there are lazy and don't know or care what stuff is worth. If I get lucky with a fairly low mileage wreck I can probably get the whole assembly for $20.

Curious if you ever got this fixed and how you went about it
 
interested as well, I have no lights on, but experience the mechanical buzzing sounds with start-up in the colder temps. Pumping brakes seems to shorten the time of the sound, and can sort of feel the buzz in the brakes when depressing the pedal.
