What is this and why would it not be hooked up?

I bought the 4runner in July, and i was doing my oil checks and what not when i noticed it. It's a 1992 3.0. My guess is something to do with when the engine is cold. Thats my hope anyway cause it's a dog untill it warms up.
The odd thing is i looked around and cant find what that plugs into.
Any help would be great.

it's a temp sensor for your EGR valve, i broke mine and pulled one off of a junker donor. It helps with the choke cycle. I had the same problem, my truck would run like crap until it warmed up. There should be a plug that comes up from the battery area towards the front. I'd start looking there. Don't buy a new part though, it's like $130 i think from Shucks. I can go take a picture if you need me to

Hey well i went out side and snapped a photo of it anyways. Good thing i did because the wire actually comes across from the drivers side. It comes across along that bridge like the spark plug wires does. Hope it helps bud

I don't have a pig tail coming out at that location. But I did find a pig tail tucked under the battery with the same connector. The po has some funky broken thing plugged in to it....to fool the computer I guess. So my guess is the temp sensor is bad. Now the sensor is just the brass part right? And it's $130 for a new one?:wow2:
 
I have a resistor in my plug to fool the computer. If you plug the line coming to the egr thing it should rujnbbetter when cold.
 
Yeah it's just a stupid sensor for the computer. Yeah i'm pretty sure i looked at the parts store, then went to the junkyard. And as you can tell it's looks like a new piece haha Best of luck bud
 
Glad I read this thread. I'm a total newb and don't have much mechanic abilities so bear with me here. But mine is totally missing the sensor,
And I don't see a pig tail type connector here are pics

Mine is missing too and my 3.0 runs great. I wouldn't freak out about it too much. I have a list of parts like that I want to grab at Pull and Pay the next time I am out there, but I have no intention of making a special trip.

Not a clue! LOL! It's one of things where if nothing feels broken, don't go looking to fix it. Learning that there are quite a few things in that 3.0 engine bay that you can do without and still fun fine if not better.
 
My only question is, my exhaust reeks and it runs like a **** until its warm then it runs great. I cant help but think me missing this egr temp sensor is why. Any thoughts?

How does yours run during the winter? I know your in Colorado and it gets cold, I,m near Lake Tahoe and gets cold here as well. My worry is its a dog untill it warms up......hell it might take a long time for the engine to warm up in the winter.
 
That sensor being for emissions, it won't really affect how the engine runs. It may make your engine pollute a little more or may affect your emissions testing. But as for overall engine performance, you shouldn't be affected by it at all.
 
My exhaust stinks so bad I cant lower the rear window. I found the egr temp senser at oreilly its on order. Mine never idles high when its cold and umtil engine is warm it is sluggish and has a lopey idle. Im in hope this is whats wrong
 
I deleted all the emissions off of my engine. Granted, it's a 22re but I would imagine that all of that junk can be pulled off of the 3.0 as long as you're not in a county that requires emissions testing.
 
Im just curious you guys are way more knowlageable than I am. Does the egr not reburn gas over? Should that help with mpg and emissions? I just wanna be able to drive my baby with out keeping all the windows up espically the rear window.
 
You should look for an exhaust leak. I would be willing to bet that yours is leaking pretty good if you have to roll up your windows when you drive.
