What is this?

I have an '03 4Runner and an '05 Tacoma, and this is hanging off the right side of the glove box on both. I can't figure out what it is.

Does it open up? Was it inside the glovebox or the outside? Metal or Plastic?

It's plastic. It''s like a piston. It's spring loaded. It hangs on the outside of the glovebox on the right side.

Here's some more pics. the back pulls out and springs back in. With the cap on it kind of works like a shock. It only attaches to the glove box though?

Its a Damper, it lets my glovebox open slowly.

Makes sense, but it's only connected to the glovebox. it just hangs there. I'll have to go and see if the other end connects anywhere. On both of my vehicles this was just hanging free.

I just went out and checked. Found the spot where the other end attaches. What a poor design. The opposite mounting location barely holds it. I guess thats why both of mine were just hanging there.

Haven't looked at the one on the 4R, but it's a bear to reinstall for the Taco. I popped mine out to install the cabin filter, took me probably less than a minute to drop the glove box and slide the filter in. (2005 Taco's didn't come with the cabin filter, 2006 does.) But it took me 15 minutes fiddling around trying to pop it back on.

I think the Taco one is different than one you pictured. If I recall, I think the other end (cylinder side, not strut) with the attachment looks like a hair pin.

Thats how I discovered it. I was doing the 45K mile service on the 4Runner and was replacing the cabin filter. {RANT}Can you believe they want $50 for those d@mn things?... I ordered one from Rockauto.com for $20{/RANT}

The one in the pictures is actually off the Taco. I was at a drive through last night and popped it open to see if it had one too. Thats when I really started to wonder.

While I had the glove box off I looked to see if the Taco had the in cabin filter. It's got the slot for one, but no filter. I may ghetto fab one this weekend. I've seen a write up where someone used a standard home A/C filter to make one, or I'll just order another one from Rockauto and make a carrier for it.

Yup, the filter for the Taco is really cheap too. Just paper and a plastic edge. I'll probably switch to a HEPA HVAC filter when the current filter is toasted. I've seen write-ups where you can get about four filters for $15-20 bucks off a HVAC one.

I can't believe Toyota cheated me the filter on the '05 Taco, only learned about it when other '05 owners brought up that '06 had them. I guess that's why I have the Motor Trend "Truck of the Year" sticker for.
