What is this...

...and can I move it about 18" down/up the line? What kind of can of worms will this be to move?

Drivers side:

In front of gas tank, and between the transfercase and outer frame rails:

What is this? What does it do?

The big question is...can I move it back towards the gas tank and right against it (where my finger is pointing). There is a joint between a flexible tube and rigid tube. I would like to move this back to that joint.

I want to move it back to the gas tank because I plan to install a long and skinny rectangular 5 gallon water tank in the area in front of the gas tank, and moving this cylinder out of the way is the last hurdle in my design. Note: I will use a 1.5" body lift to get more room.

They have about a dozen different sizes of small water tanks here:

Here is the area the tank will go, see how the cylinder is the only thing in the way. For frame of reference, this photo is taken from in front of the front sway bar. You can see the bar in the top/left of the photo:

This tank will be plumbed with a circulation loop that will have a coil heat exchanger wrapped around the exhaust. The pump will recirc the water to heat it up, a valve will then be turned to break the loop. The pump will then pressurize the tank to 35psi, and a kitchen sprayer will be installed at the kitchen in the back of my rig (see sig for details). This sprayer will double as a shower for the wife (to stop her 3rd-night complaining while camping ) and will work for the kitchen if needed.

Thats the fuel filter. Dont see any reason why you cant move it. Sounds like a really cool idea.

Yea i second that. No reason you can't move the fuel filter and deffinitly sounds like an awesome idea. I would love a hot shower while camping sometimes(although i havent tried those solar showers). I would suggest replacing your fuel filter while your moving it and have it off.

Sweet! I was hoping it was the fuel filter, but wasn't sure. Now that I know this, my plan should be complete!

Now comes the testing of the coil heat exchanger, and finding the best number of wraps to heat the water quickly, but not too quickly, or too hot.

Just another idea... Not sure if you are manual or auto, Over on Yotatech a guy named Fog had a good idea although it won't give you the fresh clean tap water you'll have with your intended setup. Fog suggested after you do the tranny cooler bypass you can use the heat exchanger on the bottom of the radiator as a water heater. Just hook up a water pump and drop a line in a lake/stream and run the engine and it will heat the unlimited supply of water.

That is a awesome idea. I in the process of replacing my radiatior and ive already done an external cooler so the stock trans cooler is gonna be competely clean. i might look into this.

I had a 1990 chevy that had an extra heat exchange tank on it, I plumbed a 12 volt pump to circulate water through, yes I had to run the truck to heat water but it worked suprisingly well!

if your going to move the filter (and yes, its the fuel filter) might as well replace it, get a new one, toyota "says" its a lifetime filter, ha, I replaced mine once a year with OEM :reddance:
