What is Xreas exactly?

How is this setup working out for you? I am buying an 08 with XREAS and I do have a set of 5100s that never made it onto my last 4th Gen. I know eventually I will need to convert.

If you do any off-road driving, I highly recommend spending the extra money for the 6112. Even on road the 6112 is super plush.

That said, 5100 is about as good as it gets for an entry price point. It's a good shock and a very popular combo.

Eibach has some stuff they recently came out with, looks good too, I would consider trying it.

XREAS stands for "Cross Linked Relative Absorber System".
X-REAS was designed to help improve vehicle on-road handling performance. This technology links each of the vehicle's shocks to it's diagonal counterpart via a gas hydraulic chamber. During cornering or when traveling over bumpy surfaces, the gas hydrauilc chamber acts like a bank "borrowing" fluid from the cross-linked shock bearing the least amount of force and "loaning" it to the shock sustaining the greatest amount of force. This exchange of fluid helps the 4Runners wheels maintain contact with the driving surface and helps lessen vehicle body sway, pitch and roll, making for a more comfortable ride.

So is the Xreas safer than the other systems?

No, X-REAS was standard on Sport Editions & optional on Limiteds. IIRC, it wasn’t available on the SR5 & definitely wasn’t stock on that model.

I think I am the only person on this forum who loves the X-REAS system. My 03 Limited V8 has it and it think it's such a huge improvement over the normal suspension, in terms of making it into a good road car. So far it has never leaked or given me the slightest trouble. That being said, I haven't tried the whole Bilstein thing that you guys rave about.

I like the concept but mine was shot at 150K miles and shame on Toyota for making it so expensive to replace.

My 08 Sport only has 90k on it, but I pushed the stock suspension over the edge on a recent forest expedition and now my left-front is leaking. Just looked at the cost of the X-REAS parts. Holy cow! :wow2: Maybe I'll do the delete and give the Ironman Stage 2 Foam cells a shot.

Exactly. I would have replaced my springs and the X-REAS shocks had the cost been reasonable. I buy OEM parts online from Cobb County Toyota here in metro Atlanta. They give a substantial discount (competitive with aftermarket on many parts) and I pick them up at the dealer. Just checked their site and it says an X-REAS rear shock retails for $417.06 and their discounted price is $295.86. No thanks!

Can’t be any worse than Range Rover parts. OEM air struts $1000 a corner just for the PART. Compressor $1500.

My X-REAS had 115k on it, had no nose dive, and it handled turns better than my new Icon 2.5" Resi. CDC w/700lb coils. Yours was probably shot.

Im, at roughly 280k on my xreas and just now getting some nose dive. going to swap with tacoma offroad fronts with 4runner specific rears soon.

My dealer service told me that an individual shock could be replaced, but that, technically, the tubing for X-REAS was one time only use. They "recommend" replacing all 4 at the same time, and the tubing, and the system can only be pressurized (?) correctly by the equipment that Toyota service has. This whole system is over $5000 to replace (in 2021). When I asked about replacing with standard shocks, they said they wouldn't do it at the Dealer service. They did it once, and the service manager got mad... But it sounds like a lot of people are pleased without the X-REAS system, so I find that to be good news!

That almost sounds like you could take it to another dealer to do it…

Interesting the TRD suspension says it’s compatible with all trim levels.

I’m sure it does. I knew someone with a BMW who said a brake job ran them $1,300, and that was in 2005. Nice car but just doesn’t interest me, especially with repair costs like that.

I’m always after full functionality at lowest cost and the ability to do so much maintenance and repair work myself is one of my favorite things about this truck.
