What major items are NOT covered by the Platinum Toyota ext warranty?

Like what about the X-Reas struts for example? If they go out inside the platinum warranty will they be replaced free of charge assuming I didn't CAUSE the failure somehow?

What about the starter? Reading Toyota's website it's kinda vague but I know Lexus' extended warranty covers struts and the starter among other things that I don't think I saw mentioned in the list on Toyota's website.

In general it seems like the Toyota warranty (even the platinum) might primarily cover a bunch of parts that you don't hear of breaking very often.

The Lexus extended warranty seems to cover parts that shouldn't break in the first 100k miles but it's not uncommon to hear of it.

What's your take on it?

The thing is - what constitutes a failure? Few have reported that the X-REAS was getting soft, and they replaced it with a more traditional suspension system. Most warranties will replace only if a part "fails". Therefore, if the X-REAS starts leaking..it can be replaced. However, just getting "soft" may not require a replacement in their mind.

Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Failure is generally defines as operating outside of the normal limits as defined by the factory repair manual - they're generally very specific about allowed ranges.

The tough part is finding a way to get your dealership to stop saying "that's normal" and actually measure the range to see if it's outside of tolerance.

But anyhow... I don't mind if it gets a little soft, so long as that's not a sign that it's going to fail shortly after the extended warranty, yet they won't do anything about it.

I am afraid you would be hard pressed to go in with your X-REAS suspension saying - it's getting soft - replace it! I had this happen to me with a couple of regular shock absorbers from one of those "national auto parts/service chains". The pair of ($50.00) shocks were getting spongy, not leaking and they wouldn't replace them. So I purchased some KYBs (which I should have done the first time) and they lasted the life of the car. I took my 4Runner in with inside tire wear-told them (the dealer) it wasn't normal - they said it was. Bottom line is that I replaced the Dunflops with only 20K on them.

I asked my dealer to check the suspension during my 50,000 service. It didn't feel quite right, but I didn't suspect shock failure. I thought I might have lost part of a bushing. In fact, the front left shock was leaking. The parts were $1516.28 and the labor was $396.21. It was fully covered by the extended warranty.

The ride and handling are definitely better now. I hadn't realized just how much things had deteriorated.

And this is why I'm glad I have the extended warranty. These 4Runners are pretty damn sophisticated and doesn't take much to turn into a very expensive repair.

They replaced the whole system. The parts listing is a bit cryptic, but appears to list 4 shocks, 2 fluid reservoirs, plus two tube sets to connect everything. The total for parts, labor, and tax comes to about $2038, so it's not that much different from $2200.

Also, the "list price" shown for the parts is $1710, with a net of $1516, which is apparently the discounted price that Toyota Financial Services pays under the extended warranty service agreement. I would suggest that anyone replacing the system without warranty should at least ask for the TFS net.

My service writer said the only other X-REAS replacement he could recall was due to a botched lift attempt.

Thanks for the info. I tow a 21 foot trailer (well within Toyota towing specs) and use what's called a "weight distributing hitch". This hitch attaches to the 4Runner hitch and "distributes" the weight of the trailer on all the axels (the 4Runners and trailer). Consequently, it compresses the X-Reas on both front and rear axles. So this is why I purchased the extended warranty as well, towing is a little tuff on the vehicle.

The dealer wants approx $2k to replace the 4 shocks on my 2003 4runner with the x-reas suspension. The vehicle has 69K miles and I do not have an extended warranty. What if any alternatives do I have...thanks?

Some on this forum have completely taken off the X-Reas and put more traditional shocks on. Of course, this would require some fabrication.

If you have an after market off-road type place they can probably help you.
