What makes the 2nd gen. so offroad capable?

Wow, ummm....you must have a completely different 2gen 4Runner in your country than we have in the U.S. I have NEVER heard of a 2Gen coming with any type of LSD or locked differential from the factory. I've never seen one or heard of one. Also, lightweight?? My 93 4Runner weighs right around 4000lbs which is NOT something I would consider to be "lightweight". 35" tires and no lift will require some pretty serious trimming/hammering/cutting of the fenderwells, even with stock offset. 38" tires with minimal lift??? Huh?? A 38" tire on an IFS front end is a time bomb, not to mention would require a pretty serious suspension AND body lift to clear. Where do you find these magical 2gen 4Runners at???

Here is something I came across while looking to see what my factory gear ratio was. It was nice to see I had 4.88 from the factory. Anyway, it mentions here that LSD did come factory on some. http://www.brian894x4.com/Gearratiosanddiffs.html

Yeah. That's correct. Altho' the 3rd member is abit different from 4.56 or 4.3 or 4.1. Which causes that you have to change the casing (I think that's the name for it at least!) if you want to change gears.

Anyway, I do know for a fact that almost all 4runners and hilux's came with LSD from factory up to '97. (e-locker in the rear was the standard then I think)
Also, most 4runners came on 31" tires from the dealership. I think 29" was the standard, please do correct me if I'm wrong. =) I'm not sure on this.

The last 4runner sold was in '96 in Iceland IIRC. That year the so called Barbie cruiser (Land cruiser Prado, or Land cruiser 90) came to replace the 4runner here.

I think the 22RE hilux's came on 4.1 gearing or 4.56. 1kz-t runners came on 4.3 and 3VZ-E came on 4,56 manual, 4.10 or 4.3 auto.

Cars usually differ between countries they're sold in.

I'e never seen a pre-95 4Runner with a factory locker in the U.S. You might be able to find them in other countries, but I don't think you will find one here unless it was imported.

Only in case you missed it, I was refering to runners and hilux's in Iceland.

Sinced you didn't say that and I didn't either, I wasn't referring to your post. ;): The post above yours was what that was directed at, in the U.S of course.

your right, mine 95 originally came with 31" tires because it came stock with 4.88 gears. But someone went by normal, smaller gear ratio and had 29's on there, which was causing the rpm's to run higher and the speedo to be off. I was surprised to see that it came with the 4.88. It made me smile.

Off-topic, I love the prados. I see these everywhere in western Canada. British Columbia gets lots of Japanese imports so we see the turbo diesel land cruiser and hilux's and with next to no kilometers on them. Just yesterday I saw a 1991 hilux surf 4runner with only 34,xxx kilomters on it, which is about 20,400 miles. That is low. I grew up in the states and never saw trucks like that. I was deprived, lol.

I wonder why some of yall say yall can barly move with 31's on your 2nd gen Runner. I have 35's with stock gears and a stock 22RE. Maybe my 22RE is just a brute. I'm not saying it's fast, but hell it's as faster than an 18 wheeler and other slow moving vehicles. What impressed me was the mud hole, damn thing pulled like no end. Also to answer the op question just based on my own opinion. From what I can tell the rear suspension is damn good, same design on those damn Jeeps that seem to go everywhere a Yota can. Also I think it has to be in the gearing, hell now other stock truck has that high of a gear to be the size the Runners are. Also IFS is'nt as bad as most think it is, it has it's disavantages but it's pretty good. Btw this is all opinion don't take this as fact. Also I wanna know what 2nd will fit 35's stock, I only know of one series of truck that can do it stock with no mods what so ever (Ford F-series pre 77 Highboys).

Had 31x10.5x15 on mine and went to 33x12.5x15 and it drives the same. And I have the 3.0. Just mapped it today and am getting about 15.8mpg's. Had to do minimal to it to get the 33x12.5's to fit before lift. I love how the Icelandic trucks look. That sh*t is sweet as hell. I want some flares like that, well maybe not that wide. lol

You won't find any LSD or locker in any factory USDM 1990-1995 4R. All had open diffs, front and rear, 4 cylinder or V6. JDM and EDM yes, they had LSDs in them from the factory. A guy in our wheelin' club has a Hilux SSR with the LSD but he's tossin' it for a locker.

The G144 axle code is somewhat uncommon, usually on autos with the factory tow package and 31s. The ring gear on the 4.88 diffs is a different size (thinner IIRC, or thicker, one of the two) than other Toy 8" differentials, so you can only use factoryToyota gears with that carrier. As stated swapping gears between 4 cyl and V6 carriers will require some modifications as well.

I've seen 33s fit with minimal mods/hammering the pinch welds but not 35s. When someone says fit 35s with no lift I think in my head they took 35s and put them on their stock truck, which would put a bit of stress on your drivetrain and suspension/front end to say the least.

I have 31s and V6 4.56s married to a 5 speed G58 powered by the 22R-E and it is not quick by any means. Sure it can pace traffic, but that's about it. Highway passing still requires plenty of planning.

Really I don't think these things are terribly capable at all from the factory, at least not the USDM ones, simply due to the open diffs.

if I was running anything larger than 29s with 4.10s, I can't see the truck going anywhere in a hurry. Not only is your speed killed, your mileage is junk too.

When I put the 33's on the speedometer is dead on. I have paced it w/ my GPS and the little radar things they have sitting around certain areas to monitor speeds and it is reading the same. Cant remember the gear ration in it at the moment but I think it is still stock. When I am going 55 or 65 that is what I am traveling. Kinda blew me away since I thought I would have been off since the tire change

2nd gens have a few hundred pounds on a 1st gen and the 3.sl0 saddled to a auto tranny doesn't help. If your 1st gen Runner is a 5 speed those trannys will move those 35s surprisingly well even with the 4 banger.

i guess thats all perspective.
I feel slow with 31s on my 87
but i also have a built and stroked bug.. lol my little rocket on wheels.
I like to think my truck keeps me out of trouble... until i drive in the snow and rain :p then I can't help myself.

clueless guy with 05 V6 4R with 6K

Happy Thanksgiving I am new and have not been able to figure out how to start a new question so i am starting here. Just bought a 2005 4R V6 limited and it has only 6K for miles. What would you do maintainence since it sat in a moist garage (outside of oil dipsick is very rusty) What should be done for age and not based on miles. Thank you very much

I have a 94 with a 4" lift with no body lift. It has 35x12.5x15's with 15x8 with 4" backspacing. The wheels do not rub in the front due to the previous owner "massaging" the inner lip. The rear do not rub unless you have the factory rear bumper and/or factory running boards. My 4Runner did not have the running boards but the rear bumper I took off. With a 3" body lift, you can fit 38"'s without rubbing from what I was told from various people with a suspension lift and a 3" body lift but most of those trucks are mall queens. I would not run a 38" tire with the IFS being weak for big tires. 35" tires is the biggest I would go. Also I have a manual trans with 4.56 gears and it struggles with the V6.

Yeah you should be able to fit 38's. I can right now up front but would rub like crazy in the rear.

I find it minimal, as it lengthens the time of the body lift 'bout one hour, 10mins with a grinder, move it up and weld.. not much of a problem... You do realise that we burn the IFS off on the new hilux/tacomas/prados/100 series/ etc toyotas... and move it down, change the camber and caster... and weld it under again to fit 38s and 44s on them... The older style hilux/4runner was way easier..

Sure, I think in my situation, as yours as well, we aren't really goin' in a straight line. That's more like a "quarter of a mile" people who do that. ;)

It's true my wheels only have few inches of travel upwards (4" or so). But that's sufficent. I'd rather sacrifice some uptravel for lower point of gravity. Of course it rubs, but not that much, and nothing in the rear. And FIY, the 2nd gen was not much different here than in your country. Why they didn't have LSD in the rear I don't know. But I do know that few of ours had the cupholder, and I think those how had, had different taillights.

I've rarely seen open diffs in a 4runner, I think the 4cyl version (save the diesel ones) are the only runners in Iceland that have open rear diffs. All the v6 have LSD.

And no, I ain't got lockers yet. But the lockers and the low gear (extra transfer case) is waitin' to be installed... when I have the time. =)
I'm runnin 1:4.56 now. But I might be goin' to 1:4.30 when I install the extra transfer cause it'll have 1:3 in high.

Of course it's lazy. But I'm not really that much in a hurry am I? And besides... all those studs will be stuck anyway when I cruise on low speed way ahead of 'em... lol

edit: By the way, nice 4runner and I like your rear bumper.

Well... the rear, not rubbin' in:

What brand of tire is that giant one in the picture? Country what? :hello:
