What mods do you wish you had done sooner?

Two items really in no particular order:

1. Moving to 285/75's from 285/70's.
2. Re-gearing to 4.56's. I probably should have done this with 285/70's. The truck feels basically stock now (higher RPMS on the highway), but the transmission has stopped dumping me into 3rd every time I hit the smallest hill.

Im trying to determine if I should go 4.56 or 4.88. Rack, front bumper, winch, dual battery, drawer system, fridge, 285/70..........it does feel a bit sluggish for sure

When I ran 285/70's I didn't think I needed a re-gear either. I knew that the truck was a bit sluggish but it wasn't bad enough to worry about, or so I thought then. At the time I was running lighter than stock rims and very lightweight Duratracs. When I switched to 285/75 Ridge Grapplers I not only picked up 3.5" of circumference but I think more significantly I picked up 11# a tire in weight. Or 44# rotational mass net. That turned the truck into a total dog. So I did the re-gear and wow what a difference.
So bottom line, when I consider what a huge improvement the re-gear was, I think how great it would have been for the first 30,000 miles I had the truck on 285/70's. If I knew then what I know now essentially

Do you have a pedal commander or sprint booster too?
Curious to know how that might have made the truck "feel" different.

Why Y-pipe? I was looking at this after I crushed my stock one awhile back.

The stock Y is so restrictive, it looks like a flat McDonalds cheeseburger, also one of my cats had junk floating around in it. I highly recommend a transmission skid plate to protect the Y.

It deletes 2 of 4 cats, has much more exhaust flow, Gadget aka Steve from URD told me it would work well in conjunction with my URD maf cal TRD tune. I mean I definitely noticed the extra pickup entering freeways and for Jeep flybys. makes more of a growl and not drone loud like an exhaust. I rather have the Y than an aftermarket exhaust, the stock tone is good enough for me.

I got mine used from a 4th gen 4Runner on Tacoma World for $150 and an extra $20 for a pair of new URD crush washers. He upgraded to the Rooster Y pipe, it has some sick bends and welds but I'm not spending $1k on that.

Skid Plates...

I almost had to buy a new transmission after realizing the stock skids didn't even cover the transmission pan.
:ybrick:
After that - Suspension (Dobinson's) was a huge improvement over the stock suspension.

So you added the Y pipe with the stock exhaust? Interesting.

I don't want a loud, obnoxious exhaust, been there done that and I like the quiet. I do think there is some extra power to be had with a freer flowing exhaust though.

Did URD perform the TRD tune for you? I would think the remapping of the MAF would be required to really notice an improvement.

Yeah, their customer service went to shit the moment Mrs. Rago got sick, their lackeys are unprofessional and basically useless. I'm never giving them another dollar personally
So Rago customer support/service sucks? May I will go with Orange Box for my rear window storage panels? Do you run the storage panels and happy with them? Thanks

Their customer service went way down hill by my experience. I used to recommend them to everyone and sent them lots of business, however I am not happy at all with the last few interactions I've had with them or the quality of the products I've received and they've lost my business. I do still have their panels and run them since I bought them in the group buy and had them powder coated myself. Overall they are good panels. I've seen better and more thought out designs like Victory's but these were the ones to get back when I bought them. I still have their light bar mount as well, but already bought a CaliRaised to replace it because it offers more functionality for me. The Ragos are both good people and I had good dealings with them, but their company's customer service is lacking and I'm done giving them my money

I haven't driven a 4runner with 4.88's, so no real life experience. But, being that you're running 285/70's, 4.88 might be overkill.

The Y-pipe paired with the stock muffler sounds exactly the same to me. I didnt notice any increase is sound. No drone thats for sure.
I do have the new Borla S Type on order but its backlogged and hopefully it ships 5/13 as stated. i'm really hoping its not too loud with the y-pipe.

i also have the MAF tuned for the TRD CAI and Y-Pipe.
I did notice improved gas mileage 1-2+ mpg. i've been constant at around 16mpg per the oem info system.
I'm also on 285/70 with a 2.5 lift.

debating on a snorkel or fiberglass fenders at the moment.
supposedly the snorkel would improve mpg 1+ but that's all speculation.

Did you do the Y pipe install yourself? How bad was it?

it was pretty easy since all my bolts weren't seized up.
if you plan on doing it, there is a band that is around one of the cats (driver side) that you should undo first before trying to slide it out.

i didnt lift the car up but i suppose you can for more room/leverage.

Rear shock mount skids. Slid off a wet rock and my shock mount took a nice hit. No major damage, just some scrapes and a bit of bent metal but would have been better to have the skid there and it could have been worse. I already have sliders and skids but waited on the shock mount skids. Why? Idk.

I agree 100%. Purchased in September, installed the SC in April. Looking back I would have done it before I drove it off the lot.

I haven’t investigated this upgrade yet, are there threads here you found useful? I see you’re located in Cali, am I correct in assuming this is CARB approved?
