What Oil Comes Stock in 06 4R? Best Oil? Dealership Oil?

I tried searching, but couldn't find what oil comes stock in the 4R. Anyone know?

What is the best oil to use to pamper my 4R? I know on a lot of other boards, people recommend Mobil 1, AMSOIL, Royal Purple, Redline, etc.

Also, does anyone know much about what kind of oil selection you have when you get it done at the dealer? Or do they only use one kind?

Did you read page 2 of the owners manual? 5-30W is recommended by Toyota. Change your dino oil every 3-4,000 miles and you will be fine. All top shelf engine oil meets governmental requirements so you should be fine whatever you choose or the dealer has as 'shop' oil.

For Mobil 1 I see two types of 5-30W oils (regular one for cars and one for SUVs) Do you guys use the regular or the one for SUV?

Also...doesnt that orange MAIN light that comes on basically tell you when you should be changing your oil? I thought it was basically a mileage tracker and after resetting it , it wold come back on after 7,000 miles..does that mean Toyota only requires oil changes every 7000 miles?

Read your owners manual for recomended service intervals. They are different depending on your driving circumstances.

The light is a mileage tracker only. Starts blinking at 5k and will stay on steady after 7k or 7.5k.

Use whatever regular oil you want...all are pretty much the same if you change your oil regularly (see next paragraph). If you choose synthetics, then i would not start it until at least after 10,000 miles. And never go from synthetic back to regular oil.

Regardless of synthetic or regular oil, i would change your oil every 5K miles (my favorite...easy to remember). If you're a bit lazy, then do it every 7500 miles. No later than 10k miles (see next paragraph for exception). Changing oil at 3K miles interval is wasting money...but it is NOT likely harmful.

If you are really lazy, then you can change oil every 10K miles, BUT you should change your oil filter every 5K miles. Remember, to top off your oil often (if needed) if you go this route.

The above is the summary of many articles that i have read in the past.

However, if you're LEASING your 4runner, then i would NOT do anything above. I would just follow the cheapest route on your Toyota recommended maintenance schedule (i guess every 7500 miles).

In my 04 the MAINT light comes on steady at 5k. It has since the first change. 52.5k now. It blinks a few hundred miles before 5k since the last change.

Is this a difference between years or engines??? V-8 vs V-6?????

This is the same on my Corolla. I drive mostly highway with it, so, if the maintenance light reflects driving habits, then it should only light up after 7500 in my Corolla.

I also believe that my fiance's Highlander is the same...5K miles maintenance light.

Their conclusion is similar to what I recommend:

"Based on the results we've got here, we'd recommend 8,000 miles between oil changes on an engine that uses no oil at all, perhaps 10,000 miles on an engine that uses some oil, and 15,000 miles or beyond with a filter change every 5,000 miles. This, of course, isn't any kind of guarantee, and you must evaluate for yourself what your engine requires. One thing we're pretty sure about though: 3,000-mile intervals is a huge waste of resources."


Basically, if your engine burns oil, then you have to TOP IT OFF, but do not have to change the oil. Topping off will keep fresh oil additives coming into the engine. You have to change the oil filter often to keep the oil clean (get rid of the crud and metal shavings in the oil).

I ran ~7500 miles on my last oil change with Valvoline Synthetic and sent the oil off for analysis. It came back showing that I had almost no particles or contaminants in the oil. The oil was still protecting the engine even after 10% of towing at least 5,000lbs during that oil change at high speeds (80mph)...

I switched to Mobil1 for the current oil change interval and plan to run to 10k without changing the filter during this interval. I will be sending it off for OUA to see how it works out. I do a lot of short driving to/from work every day but also do frequent towing and other long-distance highway driving at high speeds and it hasn't negatively affected my engine or oil at all.
