No issue with frame rub with the larger dia rear spring?

Someone gave me a set off a 2016 Trail Edition that I was going to install on my 00 Limited and then started reading about issues of rubbing and such, I had planned on using them with 5100s all the way around maybe tundra 5100 up front.

I had read those same concerns, but I got the whole 5th gen set for free, and figured I'd try it out. 25 minutes to swap out springs lol. I've had them on for about 2k miles and haven't had any rubbing issues. They are NOT as tall (uncompressed, side by side) as the OEM 3rd gen springs, so at full droop you can wiggle the spring pretty good. As far as the perch on the axle, there's maybe an 1/8" difference to where the OE spring sat. Overall I'm happy with it, rides very nice. Granted mine's a daily pavement queen (2WD) not sure Id recommend these for anyone on the trail, I'd be worried about it possibly falling out if you really flexed the rear end.

Yeah - it is not cheap but there is a huge difference between off the shelf suspension parts and custom setup parts.

On my wife's '96 4Runner we put in KYB Gas-Adjust shocks and Moog springs on all four corners and it rides really nice. On my '98 4Runner I just put in Bilstein 5100 shocks and OME springs (2" lift) and while they ride a bit stiffer than the KYBs, they are fantastic and I love the feel.

I ordered them thru Filthy Motorsports. Their service is A+++ . The process is is not just "click and buy" with them. We talked on the phone about my rig's setup, weight, my habits, the load out, and any future plants to make sure I get the best shocks possible.

So, out of those 3 options, it sounds like the Bilsteins are probably the best way to go without dropping a small fortune on shocks? So I should be able to get both rear Bilsteins for around $200 including tax? Maybe I'm just cheap, but that's still a lot of money for shocks. I just dropped $300 in fluids so I can change my transmission, both differentials, and the transfer case, plus Toyota crush washers.

How about the Gabriel shocks? I was watching YouTube videos the other day and a few people have put them on their 4Runners. They are inexpensive ($35-40 each). I'm curious how well they hold up for the budget minded folks?

I played the budget route long enough. I just wish I had made this decision four years ago when I first replaced my ToyTecs. My trip to Death Valley sealed the deal for wanting the best I could buy.

Definitely following this thread. OP you and i have pretty much identical set ups, I also have a 2001 SR5 with 5th gen wheels except they’re still silver for now. My shocks and possibly struts are on their way out. Anyway i can tell the difference without taking it to a shop?

I don’t think so. Just keep in mind they are about 18 year old shocks if they are still stock. It’s just something I want to replace before they go bad per say. Also in my list it’s radiator

Running sensen front and rear currently with better than stock ride height... moog springs in the back and preloaded sensen’s up front.

For the money, definitely a great quick refresh option

On my ‘98 gave a definite ride height boost over worn out original equipment

I have my Monomaxs on stock front springs and Moog replacement rear springs. It doesn't too rough to me, but the ride quality is very subjective to what you consider to be "smooth " or "rough".

I had tried some cheap Gabriel shocks and struts, took them off within 2 days. They handled worse than worn out OEM shocks. My intention was to use the Monomaxs for a year until I could justify a OME suspension. I really have no desire to change it out now.

Man I'm getting my 5th gen springs this week and shocks have been driving me crazy. What made you go with the 4600?

I have 5100s with OME 906 in the rear (I didn't plan any extra rear weight for a good while - 906's are considered mild and for stockish weight.) and they soak things up very well. On the road, I can hit a speed 'hump' a lot faster than I would in another vehicle and the combo is very well behaved - compression is smooth and no rebound kick. Silly example, I know, but your issue may be the strut pairing.

Just put 5100s on with 99 talls in front and Dobinson’s 137 in the rear.

5100’s not really any “stiffer”. More of a low/high speed compression and rebound tune. Handles rough terrain very well but still manages street - Not airing down tires felt like my old gas-adjusts with tires air’d down. Less brake dive, but at low speeds it’s wallowy. hwy is loose when swerving (this could be more related to the 1”-2” lift sensation from stock). Really good for blasting driveways etc, really smooth. Straight-on high speed dips and speed bumps, awesome. Just, not new SUV stiff or flat handling.

Get the idea? I like them
