What size lift do I need?

I know this has a been a very talked about subject... But here's the deal, I'm looking to lift my 00 sport 4runner and put 285/75/16 under it, I don't want to lift it an incredible amount either. I really like hungwin's set up, but I don't know if i would really need the coil over set up he is running, But I do want the best ride I can get. This will be more for looks, I do plow with the truck but rarely leaves the driveway with the plow. I want a soft ride because the roads out here in NH are horrible and would like to keep the ash tray close while hauling ass across the bumps.... Anyways I did a boat load of reading on lifts on the this site, and found the toytec coil overs are pretty sweet and the OME lift kits are great, So I'm thinking that 2" lift may be all i need?

I guess to simple this all out... 285/75/16 and leveled out....So what size lift and then what kit to go with for the best ride.

I was also looking at the bilstien adjustable 5100's with ome springs front and rear and 5150's in rear? or 5100's

3" suspension with either some front spacers or 1" body lift. Im going to run 3" ome up front, 3.5" LC out rear and 1" body lift to hopefully clear some 285's. I think you rub inside on full turn without the spacers.

yeah I was afraid that I might need 3 inches. I'm thinking this set up

Tundra Bilstein's 5100 Fronts
TRD Tundra springs
LC 7 coil rears
Tundra Bilstein's 5100 rear

I found F4-BE5-6929-H0 on ebay...but they looking like a 2" lift I dont know if they are the same as the BE5-6929-H0

Tundra TRD springs will net you 2" of lift. Either add a 1/2" spacer on top (1/2" spacer nets 1" of lift, no idea why) or better, get the adjustable Bilsteins (5100's I think) and raise it that way. The LC's out back should be sufficient. Don't forget a diff drop up front. And depending in what wheels you run, you'll most likely need spacers too.

You need spacers to run Tundra coils? Not questioning you, just trying to put a lift together and using the SEARCH button rather than starting a new thread. :) I hadn't seen anything about spacers and TRD/LC setup before.

Oh, duh! I was trying my speed reading, and when I saw spacers, thought wheel spacers. My b.

I did mention wheel spacers too. He'll most likely need them to run 285's.

You dont need them if you can deal with a little rub at full tilt.

To the OP if you want the level look dont go with tundras up from as it will have a little rake. I dont see why you want it level though. Once you add some weight in rear it will level out and once they sag a little it will level out. If you start level it will end up giving you saggy rear after lots of miles or when you put crap in the back.

Okay. Let me put it another way then: to do it right you'll need spacers. If you have rubbing, you didn't do it right.

True but then again running spacers to some is the "wrong way". I myself want to run 285's but dont like how spacers ride. Some do some dont.

Another option for the OP would be to run 255/85/16. Not as wide but taller and should rub on full tilt. But they are usually only muds that cost a fortune!

I tap out. I was just curious about wheel spacers and stock sized tires.

Thanks for clarifying though.

:)

Sidebar: Wheel spacers, IMO are pricey for what they are. I get your wheels are on them, it just seems like $220 shipped is a lot of moolah.

But, as PBR said, do it right! I recently tried installing a sound system thinking I could cut corners. I ended up spending more $ buying stuff to not cut corners.

Not worth having an rub. Every time you turn it will annoy you. Every time.

Touché. I guess the only "right way" would be wheels with a different off set. I run spacers on my 540i/6 though and have had 0 issues. But you're right, it is a crutch as opposed to right.

I was thinking offset wheels. Thats genious. LOL. I overlooked that.

You can fit them with stock suspension.

No matter how much lift you have, you will need to trim and pound to minimize rubbing. (If the suspension flexes well)

You will want 1"-1.5" of body lift to minimize the rubbing when you fully, to the bumpstops, compress tires. This rubbing is at the top of the wheelwells.

If you do 2"-3" of suspension lift, you will further reduce rubbing but they will still rub exactly where they would without any lift. This rubbing happens less. The rubbing will happen more when you flex.

As I said, stock suspension and no body lift, they will fit but you will need to cut and pound more. You may also want to extend the bumpstops so they don't compress into the top of the wheelwells. I don't believe that extending the bumpstops (limiting the suspension travel) is the proper setup for a good offroad vehicle.

I can't find the build right now but it shows how to fit, I think, 33s on a stock Tacoma. You do have to cut and tub the front wheelwell/floorboard.

what!? your saying 4" of lift? are you for real, im running 285s with no lift... you do not need a lift to run 285s, sure you will have some minor rubbing at full lock and full flex, but if the truck is not going to be a wheeler then you will never fully flex it out and 99% of the time you will not notice the rub...

to the OP you most certainly do not need 4" of lift, just go with a 2" if you dont want rubbing and call it a day

They'll rub almost as bad with a 2" lift as they will with no lift.

and they barely rub at that... i should know, im the one running them(sorry not trying to sound like an a$$) but it gets frustrating when every one is telling people that you have to have a lift to run them... you dont! the OP stated that he/she didnt want to get a big lift, to me that means that he/she is not building the truck with the intentions of wheeling it or offroading it much. he/she is mainly going for looks, and you can fit a 285 under a stock 4runner with out lift. i do not experience rub in day to day driving, the only time i will experience when not 4wheeling is when i am turned to lock and drive over something, like into a driveway ect. and lets face it, how often do you turn to lock and drive, hardly ever, maybe in a parking lot, but you shouldnt have to drive over anything in that situation... so i cant really see as how it would bother anyone. i get a little rub off road a full flex but i know what it is and so its of no concern. a 285 will fit and for the most part go unnoticed in day to day driving, now if the OP had a 2002 limited i might say sure you will want some lift, but the 00 will sit just as tall as mine. here is a pic of mine when i put my 285s on to see how much clearance i had, this is turned to lock(i only rub on the frame rail behind the strut -not going to damage a thing) IMAG0621.jpg

All good kid, no offense taken. The OP asked what size lift he/she needs to run 285's. I understand 285's fit. But to run them right (which to me means without rubbing) a 2" lift isn't going to cut it.

LMAO. Who puts on 285's for look. People plan on using there 4runner so it will flex. My 265's rub when I flex and or turn at full lock.
