My name is Colby and I'm from the great state of Kentucky. So, I've recently got a great deal on my first 4runner and could not be happier..well. I say that but now that I've found this website I can't stop thinking about how BAD*** my baby can become. I've looked at as many threads as I could handle and now its time to start mine. I know somewhat what I want to do but I'm on a budget. I would LOVE to have a nice front bumper with off road lights, a rear bumper with tire carrier, and sliders. But good Lord they are expensive. Any suggestions on where I can find some cheaper ones?

Also what do yall think about getting rid of the running boards?

Thank you! Verrrry expensive. Ive found a few websites that make nice bumpers for 4r but they are like 1500 a piece.. You know of anywhere cheaper?

Your 4r has 412k miles?? Is that the original motor?

Savage Offroad bumpers are very reasonable. Have one on the front of mine. And yes, ditch the running boards!

Anyone suggest a lift? I want about 3 inches..but once again Im on a budget so Im looking at 200-300 max. I was thinking rough country..know anything about them?

Buy tools and a welder and then make all your own shit. It's much more rewarding, makes your truck unique, way cheaper, and fun

And as far as lifting, I presume you have read all the threads that are stickied referring to lifts? And do you plan to go offroad with your rig, or mainly as cosmetics? I would save and then get a nice lift, Rough Country is typically regarded as you get what you pay for, and I know my buddies Jeep with a Rough Country lift is a back breaking ride so I would save and get something nicer in the future (as hard as it is to save).

Yea I've heard that about rough country and was hoping someone would tell me differently. Haha. But you are probably right I'm going to need to save for a nice lift. And yes I plan on it being a mean wheeling machine. Of course I want her to look nice doing it but performance is key. Im gonna have to invest in a welder for sure.. I cant afford all this haha.

I'm also interested with bumper replacement for my 3rd gen T4R, not so much for the looks but rather for the functionality. I want additional protection from the city jungles, mainly from other folks bumping into my T4R trying to park their cars, as seen with my existing bumpers. I would like to protect the front-end from the dumb deer and turkey that wandered onto the road around the corner in my neighborhood. I'm thinking of the tubular steel with bush-guard type that I've seen in Australia, where I've seen it in action in the back-roads.

I do have a welder but it seems more logical to get a well made unit and modify it to my needs.

There's an old saying, "Anything worth doing, is worth doing right." You can buy cheap and regret it, or you can save up and buy something nice.

I was in the same boat, but I saved up for the Toytec Ultimate lift and I love it. I also saved up for 4xI front plate bumper, ~$800 and it looks badass. There's a bumper list in the sticky, check it out and see what you like best. I'm not a fan of tube bumpers which tend to be cheaper, so if you like that style, then rock it!

That is a HUGE reason why I would like add some armour. I live in the middle of BFE and deer are everywhere! I haven't owned a single vehicle that hasnt had to have repairs due to deer. (one reason I love to hunt them so much) I really dont want my 4r to fall victim to their stupidity as well.

I would love to be able to purchase one and make mods to it but buying it in the first place is out of the question due to how expensive they are. I think I'm going to have to just get some steel and get to work. :dance:

Totally agree. I just have a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other. I really dont want to wait to lift it but I know I should.

Check Craigslist frequently. Check local junk yards.

You could get lucky and find someone selling a bumper or a totaled 4r.

Im using OME 881 coils on stock struts with about 3/4" aluminum spacers up front, and 890s in the rear on my 2001. Its 3", and while it may not be the sickest offroad system on here, it certainly isnt the worst. Rides great on the highway and on moderate to difficult trails where giant articulation and lockers arent required. Spent about $350 for the coils 2 years ago and dont have a single problem or real complaint.

P.S. Rough Country sucks. I had one of their lifts on my old Bronco, and removed it within a year... it was garbage

Nice looking 4Runner. Yes, ditch the running boards. I've got a 3" lift on the way. Eibach 3" front coils, Tundra 5100s, 890 OME rear springs and Rough Country 2.0 shocks on the back.

Well, not a lot of progress so far. But I did pick up some nice KC flood lights.

This weekend I'm replacing my spark plugs and wires with ngk. Any tips? And I know the wire kit only comes with 3 wires because only 3 of the plugs go to the ignition. But what should I do to the other 3?

Why does everyone say to lose the running boards?

If you can afford a set of sliders, then great. But if not I'd rather bash up my running boards than my rocker panels.
