what to do???

so I wasn't planning on selling my runner but I had a guy offer me a deal... first off I have a 99 highlander lifted with 140k miles, it could use a good buffing and has a few spot in the paint that could use some attention. and a rear bumper that has a small bend in it because friend back in to me in the drive way. other than that runs drives great and just did a fresh tune up.

now the deal..... he has offered me a trade for a black 03 limited with 134k miles. its a limited fully loaded, tan leather(which is my favorite interior) 4wd and looks spectacular. but there is a catch. it has a rebuilt title. ive been thinking on it for a while and I keep going back and fourth about what to do. the reason I am on the fence is because he said he would add cash to but he would have to look at mine first to see how much we would give with it. I love the fact of having a newer model and everything I would want in one, but the rebuilt title is holding me back.

what do you guys think? id love to have some feed back from other 4runner owners

thanks in advance

I wouldn't trade if I were you. Its not because of the rebuilt title (I bought mine with one), I just don't like the look of the 4th gens. If it's really something you want, go for it.

I've got a '99 highlander as well. I've had a few offers online, it's never been listed for sale, but they were just shots in the dark. I'd like to move up to a 4th gen one day but it would have to be an '06+. Those have a greater value so there would have to be money on my side but I like the '06+ body/lights more than the early ones.

I don't exactly love them stock, but I love the way they look with a lift and some tires, and I know what I can do to make it my own. and if I can get him to boot enough cash for a lift and some used tires i think it will be hard for me not to.

i guess i should just go take a look and talk more details about why it has a rebuilt title. and what damages were done exactly

yea the projector headlights do look better. but there is no way i could afford to move up that far right now

Are the v8s more reliable? Or u would just rather have the v8? I don't need a v8 so that's not a huge deal breaker for me

To me it's more than the head lights. In fact the early non projector headlight models have projector foglights. When they went to projector headlights the fogs went to open reflector. I prefer the rounded wheel wells and less plastic. In the log run it will look better and more modern longer.

that's true!

HA HA! What is it with our 3rd Gens?? I've got some guy hounding me for 3 months now... and recently offered to trade me his 2nd Gen Tundra, with a 3" lift and 35's for 4Runner... if I add a little money on the side! lol! He also offered to trade for an 09 Kawasaki ER6N! lol!

Honestly, I'd hold on to your 3rd Gen. I've seen guys on here sell theirs, only to regret it later, and some even buy another, and pay to mod it too!

If all goes to plan.... I'm never selling mine.... it's my baby! :)

Wow huge mistake.

The reason he wants to trade and not sell is because he can claim it is worth more than it really is during the trade. It's totally shady.

Why doesn't the guy just sell his and buy a 4Runner if he wants a 3rd gen? Because it is not worth much due to the salvaged title.

It's salvaged because something major happened to it. If your runner is fine right now why trade?

You could buy it, drive it for two weeks and it throws a rod or blows a head gasket. You have no recourse and would be screwed. Sadly it happens all the time.

The only reason he's offering it as a trade is because its his uncles and they were going to give him a even better price on it.

I told him I couldn't let it go because of what fightman80 said. It's my baby. And I couldn't buy bother one this nice for what I have in it.

Now he comes back 10k for it. I have maybe 6k into this one. That alot of money. But i just don't know. He sure wants it that's for sure

You'll regret getting rid of your 3rd gen. I'm on my third one, and I will not get rid of this one, if anything I will get another! My oldest daughter is going to be driving soon, her first car will be a 4Runner!

Rebuilt title = stay away. I don't care what the reason is. They're a pain in the a** to register. They're a pain in the a** to resell. (Which I bet is why he wants the trade). Keep your truck.

Oh I won't stop driving a 4runner. This one is #2 for me. I'm looking at some 4th gens. I just don't know what to do. I'm still young only 20 and trying to be smart with my money right now so it doesn't hurt in a few years. I could selling if 10 buy another one and drive it stock and not have the lift and all the goodies and put my left over money somewhere else and start saving. But I have a nice truck now that paid for and only costing me fuel maintenance and insurance. Idk. I just got some thinking to so

I wouldn't do it... Even if you didn't mind the rebuilt title... When you go to sell it down the road trust me it'll matter ... And 4th gens are fugly

I would definitely trade my 3rd gen for a 4th only if it had a V8 and a clean title. It's going to more of a headache if you ever try to sell the 4th gen later on with the rebuilt title.
