Going to need a LOT more information. What gen. 4runner? Auto or 5spd? Budget?

Yeah, put exactly back what was in there from the factory.
its a 1986 2.4l diesel 5sp
it looks good but it is gutless! and need more power to turn the 37"tyres

Stay diesel!! Put in a cummins 5.9L!!! :cheers: JK....or am i?! Would a 5.9 I6TD with a suitable transmission ever fit in a 1st gen? If not, put in a 3.6TD cummins and enjoy a torque machine!! Good luck!!

A 5.9L Cummins would be SOOO heavy in a truck that size. You would need a lot of reinforcement in the front. Way too much work for it to be worth it.

If your looking for V8 power I would recommend a GM LS series engine. Plenty of aftermarket support. GM even sells one that is called the "E-Rod". Its a complete engine, harness, even catalytic converters to allow almost any vehicle stay emissions compliant. If your looking to stay all toyota then you have a few choices, in my opinion, but the swap would be harder due to lack of aftermarket support or not as much.

A friend of mine put a Chevy 4.3L Vortec V6 in has '91 Toyota pickup... solid axle swap, running 35's, twin-stick dual t-case. That 4.3L moves that truck pretty well! I forget which tranny he has... maybe a 700R4. There seems to be a decent aftermarket for that engine, too.
LSx swaps are also popular, but finding a decent used one can get pricey. I've seen guys pick up L33's (the iron block, truck version of the LS) pretty cheap and build them with LS parts.

There is a 4 cyl version of the 5.9. I think it is a 3.9 liter. It was mostly used in small equipment. It has the same bore, stroke, and bell housing. It was a modular type engine.
