What would cause 07 Toyota 4Runner 2WD SR5 check engine + VSC TRAC lights to come on?

What would cause 07 Toyota 4Runner 2WD SR5 check engine and VSC TRAC lights to come on? History: Approx 50,000 mi, Purchased Certified 12-10 @ 43,000 mi, no problems or lights until today.

1. My wife was the last driver and only 3-4 times ever, could she have accidentally triggered these lights? I have only checked the gas cap for a seal and spot checked lights.

2. I have called two dealers since the Owners Manual indicates Take To Toyota Dealer on both items. One Dealer said it would be a 125.00 diagnostic charge.

3. I did a search and did not find much directly related to the 07 Generation.

4. What would you suggest I inspect or check visually even though the last oil change was the last work 3-4 months ago? All the Vacuum hose in the Eng compartment is what I am about to inspect.

I also have an 07 SR5 2WD 4runner and mines doing the exact same thing except my traction control light is on as well! im at 80,000 miles so I need to take it in about now anyways but idk if they just coke on wight the check engine light or what? Also when ever I push my "Auto LSD" button it doesn't show that it's on? Maybe because of the traction control or something but I'm not sure! Let me know what you find! I was doing a lot of intense research on the subject last night and found that the gas cap might not be on properly or the Catalytic Converter could be messed up I would check in that area

I “hope” the CK Eng Light and VSC TRAC lights are off and solved. “Before the recent info.”

1. I took the advice of getting the truck scanned for a code and it showed a small leak at the gas cap. I d/n think to ask the Tech for the code vs him telling and what it represented.

2. At this point I noticed no resistance of a seal on the cap and the good bad “Soft O-Rings” shows why. Plus, the old was not pushing the cap off enough to help remove the cap.

3. The Tech said the light should reset later. I asked if the scanner would detect the leak as solved and it did (the light also went off).

4. To and from the Auto Store the back driver’s side window went down on its own. Is there a connection there?

gas cap and auto rear driver's window down feature is not related. nor is the auto anything down besides the driver window a feature. congratulations, you found another issue to fix

Follow-up on gas cap replacement is not as bad looking today as yesterday (even though the lights are still off.). The original O-ring looked flattened and worn yesterday but not today (attached) after resting over night off the tank. It looks just as full as a new O-Ring today and feels better with normal O-Ring density vs the foam rubber the new has.

1. There was a statement related to the cap being on correct. From seeing the original O-Ring initially, it looks as if the O-Ring was not aligned good or over tightened. I felt alignment was automatic. Can you over tighten (past 1-2 clicks) and cause bad alignment?

2. Without looking back for an answer, is that code still stored or was it cleared when the lights went off? If it is still there, I’ll go back and get the actual code. My reasoning is to know this was the fix needed vs other Sensors/Etc needed while I have an extended Warranty on the truck.

3. What are the factory warranties/yrs related to emission items? Even though my warranty was requested and sold as Bumper-To-Bumper (which has been questioned by the provider over the Dealer’s contract of 6 yrs on the 07)?

I followed-up with a different Tech and his Actron Auto Scanner displayed no codes detected or Etc.

1. He explained his scanner would display a message (Emission leak, Cat if the catalytic converter is a problem and Etc vs a code #).

2. The Auto Store’s Tech mentioned both a # and message which leads me to think some scanners are better X detecting problems.

3. I feel time will tell if the cap was the problem vs any other sensors or Etc. Technology Is Good And A Bear In Some Matters!!

4. Not feeling the Dealer is helping in your best interest is a Killer. Such as, alternatives vs return To Dealer. My dealer is 25+ miles away vs approx 3 mi to the closest but my 100.00 deductible is dropped/dissolved only where I purchased. Dealers should be Honest Chains vs Individuals with independent benefits IMO. I guess I have learned the Dealer’s franchises are in control vs Toyota that I thought set the rules/standards.

This same light pattern has happened to me recently. The code that pulls up is P0000. I have cleared it and a week later it is back, same code and lights. Cleared it again. I might try the new gas cap as I don't ever feel like mine is tight.

Purelife, How old is your cap? I feel my original cap will work now since it has come back to a normal shape vs flattened and misaligned with the tank’s neck. Is you cap’s O-Ring flatten and appears misaligned? I feel that came from over tightening or over-filling the tank (North, TX Heat, LOL). The soft foam quality of the O-Ring from the Auto Store vs the dense Original O-Ring quality might be dictating something. What?

Those scanners are known to actually cause this issue. They can possibly clear your zero point calibration data and can't read Vsc codes anyways. Try zero point calibration procedure.

Purchasing an inexpensive OBD would provide you with error codes that define the nature of the problem.

Couple of hints/possibilities:
Gas cap was not tighten correctly.
Your exhaust system is leaking.

Two easily checked items. To clear the error lights disconnect one battery terminal for a n hour or possibly longer. This is a hard reset so you windows need to be initialized again as per the owners manual. An inexpensive OBD reader provides the function of resetting the lights. IF THE PROBLEM IS ONGOING THE LIGHTS WILL BE BACK.
