get the 85 so you dont have to worry bout swapping the solid axle, and if your lucky youll find one with the 22re!

if you want ifs then any of the 86-89s would be fine. my 87 sr5 kicks ass, but i wouldnt get the 3.0... ask anyone thats been doin this for a while, they just have a bad rep. if you want a v6 then throw in the 3.4 or just stick with the 22re

Very good to know about the straight axle. I definately like the straight axle idea after dealing with the IFS on my truck..
Yeah I haven't heard good things about the 3.0.. I like my 3.4 but I want to see how they 22re feels I think.
Hows the gas mileage on the 22re? or can you get an 85 with the 22re?

you can get the 85 with a 22re, but they are kinda rare. and finding one stock (if thats what your looking for) could take a while too... i get over 20mpg highway with my22re, but thats not quite traveling the speed limit.

85 was the last year with the solid axle and the first year for the 22RE. Average mileages run from 15 to 20 mpg, depending on your foot, auto or manual, and what gears/tires combo you're running.
The straight axle is certainly an easier beast to work on, but there's a reason they went to IFS. I like my IFS because I daily drive my 86. If I pick up the 85 I'm looking at, it'll be primarily a trail rig and the stiffer ride won't matter as much.

you def want 84-85 for solid axle, but not 22r or 22re you want an aussie spec 2L 2.4l DIESEL. much better motor and better on fuel plus heaps of low end torque for chugging up hills:
I had no idea they made deisels for the 1st gen's.. How common are these engines? I dont know that I have ever seen or heard of one. Esp here in WA.
I've always wanted to try out a straight axle set up on a runner and compare it to the ifs I have currently for on and offroad. I'm wondering how much these things can take stock too...

No diesels in these trucks here in the states. We never get the fun stuff.
The 3.0 isnt bad, as long as you get a 5 speed. I prefer it over the 22re.
I wouldant call the IFS a deal breaker. For most, it will suit them fine and is actually quite capable off road and smoother on the road.
I guess we need to know your plans for the truck? Is this a daily driver? or just something to beat on.

Well I do have another car (civic) to drive daily but the runner I drive on the weekends and then ofcourse on fishing, camping and 4 wheeling trips. So it will have some good on road time.
I agree that ifs is more than capable, esp for the offroading I have done thus far. I haven't done any rock crawling or anything just some mild trail riding but would like to get into a little more technical stuff. I would say I am more of an overlander than anything.

I was lucky finding mine. Most want a good chunk if they are already built. I have a redonkulous amount of $ into mine. I wouldn't let it go for less than 6500. But I'd walk home if someone waved the cash at me.
In reality the 85 solid axle 22re T4R is the holy grail of Toyota 4x4. However I would pick up any clean 86 and up 1st gen if the price was right.
