I would be very surprised if that was a legitimate text. He typed out what I assume is the title of your craigslist ad... word for word, in a text. I always ignored texts like those when I sold vehicles on Craigslist in the past.

I think he copy and pasted the the title of my ad, but what would be the point of the text. Too see if it is a mobile number and not a land line to spam me by my response of a text?

And like 5 minutes later I received an actual call but it was a local number. This one is 323 area code.

I doubt it's legit. Is your number in the CL ad? I get texts like that all the time when I list cars for sale (I won't respond to Craigslist emails due to spam) and none of them have ever been legit.

Yes, CL ad has my #. I have already gotten 2 illegitimate emails that I never responded to, so I am thinking about putting in my ad that I won't respond to emails, text/phone calls only. Or does that sound *****y?

Here's what I do when I sell a vehicle on CL. I don't answer any calls from unknown numbers. If it's a real person that's actually interested, they'll leave a message, and I'll say to leave a message if I don't answer in the ad. And I'll only reply to texts that actually sound like something I would send if I was interested in buying a vehicle.

Here's the text I received from the guy that actually bought my last vehicle:
"Hi, I was wondering if your trans am was still available?"

The fact that he said trans am, and not the full title which I believe was 2000 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, led me to believe that was probably a real person, which it was.

You'll also get calls from companies offering to help you sell your vehicle, you can just ignore those too.

Also, I don't know if this still works, but when I put things on CL, I type out the number like so: 8six7 fivethree0nine. Harder to pick up in a program, but a human can decipher it. But who knows, maybe that doesn't even matter anymore.

You should definitely reply to those Nigeria ones. They have some real lucrative opportunities. Apparently Nigera has like 15,000 princes that are rich, that die all the time and want to leave random Americans money!

How you block it will depend on what phone/text program you use though. Your best bet is probably google on that one. But for me, I just long press the text, and select "black list" and it's done. That's on an Android with Handcent.

LOL man that sucks! It's an option on DROIDS. I have a Galaxy S3 and there is an option in the menu list for the text to register it as a spam # and then they can't text or call anymore.

I thought about doing that as well, just to see what they would offer me but then I was afraid to do it in case it takes me months to sell it. If I get desperate and decide to unload with them, they may drop the 2nd offer significantly from the first one knowing I am now desperate to sell.

Im not sure of the details, but if thats the case try different carmax locations. They may or may not enter your information into a shared database but it doesnt hurt to get a legit offer to see where you stand. Each time ive gone in just to browse my local carmax's inventory they have been nothing but helpful.

My brother-in-law told me they gave them a pretty good deal when they sold their Ford Explorer to them. He said the dealership was only going to give them $900 and they got $2k from Carmax. So they don't sound like total dirtbags.
