There are some simple rules when posting on CL that will prevent you from having to deal with scammers and frauds.
1) check the box for "do not show any email contact"
2) state that you do NOT receive text messages & then do not answer any
3) state that the only way to contact you is calling on the phone 8-8pm
4) list your phone number. If you are paranoid get a Google voice number.
This will filter out 95% of the scammers.
Only agree to meet during the daytime and in public.

I responded with a simple "yes" just to see. Look what just came. Complete scam. He is trying to get my PayPal address. I have no shame in exposing his # now!
Man! No Shame! How rude! That was me impersonating a Nigerian. Next time I gotta be more subtle. Now I gotta change my number, Dangit. I hope the NSA isn't watching me.

I went ahead and did as [MENTION=65101]BrianSD_42[/MENTION] suggested and a few hours later I got a similar text as the first initial one asking if my (full copy and pasted title again) was still available. It was yet again another 323 area code. Then just now a guy in NorCal texted me asking if I would accept $6k cash for it. :crazy: I didn't respond as my ad now specifically says NO texts.

The Nor Cal one might be worth contacting back. Don't put your number in the ad if you're not looking for texts. Everyone texts Craigslist posters.

Just my opinion but I still think it is a good way of filtering out scammers. Obviously if you already texted the guy he will text back. I phrased my CL ads as
"this number does NOT receive texts so please call - thanks"
If you say I don't prefer texts they will probably try anyways. Its not a guarantee but for me it filters out most all the scammers.

So he texted you. Fine. Call the number the next day. Leave a phone message if he doesn't pick up. If he doesn't call you back then he was never going to buy anyways.

CL own web instructions say MOST scammers will not actually speak on the phone. So if you want to filter out the guys from X foreign country conduct all business via a voice conversation.
BTW if the buyer wanted to buy he would answer or call back. If he doesn't then F him he's not legit. For these reasons I don't list email even the CL one, who doesn't have a phone anyways in 2013?

Thanks for the suggestion. I am gonna state my # doesn't accept texts. I am still getting them. Got 2 more while I slept from scammers. Same song and dance about "item" and not local area codes.

I sell stuff on cl a lot, and I do allow texts and calls (I prefer them to scammer emails) but I started messing with my phone number like seven1nine- 44two-blah blah blah bc I was getting a lot of BS that way too. It seems to have put a stop to it

I dont know if it really helps or if I just started getting lucky, but it seems like when you have the # all typed out numerically, it would be easier to use auto-generated responses for scams... Just like the wording on emails is always similar. You can see it coming a mile away, its pathetic and I cant help but wonder if anyone is actually stupid enough to give into it. Anyway, Good luck

As a buyer I prefer a phone number of some kind. I hate having to email just to ask is it still available. When I am looking to buy I often consider 5-10 ads so being able to quickly call is soooo preferable to emailing and waiting to hear back yes it's for sale then having to email again to ask for contact info.

Yep. Definitely a risk alienating potential buyers when not including any contact info, but on my end, well worth it.

Sorry, my thread has officially become advise for selling my sequoia. So I had a call today from a guy that asked what is my absolute lowest price I would sell it for. I told him "it is negotionable and I expect to get talked down in price but I would rather discuss price after looking at it." He seemed to be ok with that answer and said he was going to call his insurance broker and I offered to text him the VIN and he was excited about it. Is my response good?

Very good. That's the same thing I tell potential buyers and sellers if vehicles I'm interested in. You handled that perfectly.
