does anybody know what is faster off the line. the old 4speed v6 in the 03 and 04 t4r's. or the new 5speed v6 in the 05 to current t4r's. I am asking because am am going to buy my first t4r limited. and my budget is probably going to put me at about an 04 or 05 because I am holding out for the limited. but I was wondering if I should lean one way or another based on the difference between the tranies.
thanks

Do you plan on taking T4R to the drag strip?

gooood question

well snrph
what do you think, I don't really see a good reason to take an suv to a drag strip, but since you are so smart maybe you can give me one.
just for the record that is a valid post, so you can stuff your attitude up your smarta**

This is what I take to the 1320.

If you had a choice between 4-speed vs. 5-speed auto tranny with the same engine, then i would definitely go with the 5-speed. I would imagine that the 5-speed is slightly faster due to more aggressive gearing. In addition, the 5th gear is likely lower numerically, which should help with fuel economy. So, in essence, you get the best of both worlds. The 5-speed auto is a proven unit (as is the 4-speed auto).

Good luck.

Im Sorry, But Wondering If A Manuel or automatic in your 4 runner is faster off the line isnt really a valid question in terms of 4 runner performance....Not to Dis previous responses but it all depends on so many things ..You tech. should be able to get the manuel off the line a tad quicker ( if you are a very experienced driver) By means of higher engine Rpm and proper clutch.....As where the auto will have to go from idle thru torque converter ..but we are talking milliseconds basically and You are driving a 4 runner ..so IMHO the point is mute since a SUV is not a performance vehicle. and there are too many variables with driver skill ,experience , reaction time ETC. there is a differance between QUICKER and FASTER
Both the 4-speed & 5-speed are automatics.

For chadcincy, it looks like you also already have an answer to the same question in your other thread on the 4 speed vs. 5 speed: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38808

I don't think 4th gen 4runners ever came with manual tranny.

Dude, maybe you should lighten up since he just asked a question and you came back with the atitude. Not a way to introduce yourself to us.

Play nice now. :)

thanks for your reply
but I think you missread my question I made no mention of a manuel. the question was regarding auto trannies only. which other members understood. so if I may say so, it was a valid question. and I disagree that you do not believe an suv can be a performace vehicle. because some are faster than others and while it is not a sports car it can still provide levels of speed not found in the average run of the mill vehicle that soccer moms drive.

There are certainly videos of Jeeps SRT8 whooping on some mustangs and chargers on youtube. The AWD gives them a big advantage off the line. The others begin catching up and would overtake, but many can't in the 1/4 mile. Funny actually.

Touchy, touchy... :biggrin2: Lighten up :yesyes:

To respond to your "valid post" - 5-speed will offer a bit of better fuel economy, and will be a little faster of the line than a 4-speed.

V8 will offer a better of the line performance than V6, but it will cost you some MPGs. :(

You gotta play nice in the sand box if you want to make friends

Oh, yeah, the name is snhrph, not snrph as you wrote... Must be quick fingers ;):

The V8 is down-right, balls out, screaming fast! I'm suprised how fast it is, to be honest. You've got to respect it or it'll get you into serious trouble, kind of fast. Especially if you goose it when taking a turn "like turning left at a stop light". Just yesterday I was going home, cruising at about 60 and had an itch to blow out some carbon. I stomped on it, and I'm not kidding, I was at 90mph in practically a blink of the eye. I looked down and was "wooo...that's enough led foot".

The torque on the V8 is pretty fun. Late to work one day I stepped on it while turning left and did a 4-wheel drift for a couple feet on accident until I corrected. But that was on my older stock dunlops and while the VSC system was offline because I tweaked a wire putting on a spacer lift. I doubt it would do that now that I have the ABS/VSC back online and the BFGs.

I absolutely love the V8, the power seems endless and it is when it cuts out @110... been there dont that. The car is COMPLETELY stable at that speed just afraid of those ****ing shitty dunlops vaporizing on me!

Im also surprised I have not broken the wheels loose yet...it just amazes me.

yea, the V8 is flawless... a perfect match with the 5 speed tranny. it is so smooth that you don't even know you are already over the speed limit in a blink of the eye.

i am just curious, will our V8 take FX35? on a roll or from stop? question asked is because i always see a dude driving his FX35 on my way back home, he drives it like he steals it.

once i while i took him on my TL, so just curious if our V8 has the capability to let him eat dust?
