whats the best tire for me.. I've searched

my lift came in yesterday so now i am looking for some new tires to go along with them, but i am not all too sure what tires to go with. my 4runner will encounter the beach this summer hopefully rausch creek 2 times this summer and then in the late fall/ winter it will be used as a hunt truck. so my question what would be the best type of tire for my 4runner. I'm looking to get 285-75/70-16. i want to be able to run on the beach without worrying about aggressive MT's digging in to the sand.

comment with any tires you like and some feedback on them.

Check out the BFG AT. I think that tire will suit you. Or if your looking for a bit more aggressive tire, check out the Goodyear duratracs.

I was going to say a M/T, but then you threw in the whole digging in the sand thing! lol! What if the tire were wide?? I find mine floats on snow a little, and I'm running the same size in a Maxxis Bighorn MT.....

I'll be honest, we don't have any beaches around here where I can take the truck onto, so I don't have any idea how it would do in the sand......

an M/T such as the Baja Claw or Kuhmo KL-71 that resemble paddles will prob do ok in the sand.

me personally run BFG's on all my vehicles so i am biased towards the T/A KO and T/A KM2

KO's are prob your best bet for tires though theyre pricey.

Yokohama Geolander AT/s. Great pavement manners, rain, snow, ice etc.

Decent in mud and do really well in sand. I had 2 sets on my previous vehicle and immediately put a set on my 01 runner. They wear like iron, quiet and take minimal balancing weight. The largest weight I have on either of the 4 wheels is 1 ounce. This has held true for all three sets Ive owned.

Look up the General Grabber Red Letters. From what I've read and seen, they do great in the sand. SR5Sushi runs them and seems to love them.

What kind of wheel are you running them on? You might need to keep an eye on rubbing on your upper A-arm if your backspacing isn't enough.

Not in stock right now but if you call them they usually give you a good estimate when they may be ready. Under $550 shipped anywhere in the states for new 33" A/T tires is a great deal.

duratracs......

Been wheeling and desert trucks for 18 years and ran alot of what's out there, the duratrac has been the most solid tire I've used for a 90% of everything tire. Its a nice mix of at/mt semi quiet and softer compound so it conforms to trail. That size I beleive they come in 3 ply sidewall so that takes care of the only issue I've heard of.
It won't sling mud as well as a designated mud tire but doesn't pack like a at, it crawls better than a at and has a winter snowflake rating for skiing etc.... it does grab rocks better than a at.

Sand it won't dig as bad as a mt but will float almost as well as a mellow tread design of a at....

If i could sell my kevlars I'd be going back to it, that tire in a 3 ply is amazing.....

Terrain is desert here I've had them in sandy washes, rocks, snow ice and I have yet to see a mid pack tire handle as well, if i were strict rocks I'd stay my kevlars and then possibly km2 I like both if i were strict at I have no idea I wont ever run a at again I prefer to play in the nastier spectrum.

any tire that resembles a paddle tire will not be good with our trucks, paddle tires work great with vehicles that have high horsepower/weight figures, but you go put a set of paddle tires on a 4runner and put a set of ATs (both at like 10psi) on an identical 4runner, the one with ATs will do better than the one with paddles. paddles are great for digging down and thats exactly what the 4runner will do. -now im not so sure about a SCd runner but i still dont think that one of those would have enough power to make a paddle or paddle like tire a good choice.

there is a reason beach patrol, rescue, and lifeguard rigs run AT tires on the sand. they work the best. -but in mud AT tires will not do so well.

now i have run a set of maxxis bighorns (a mud tire) on the sand and they worked great, i was super impressed with their performance(and i was not aired down either). sure they are a mud tire, but their lugs/blocks are staggered enough that they will not "paddle" the sand, but they will give a good "bite"

as soon as i put it in 4wd, i was able to back right out-

they do well in the rocks and mud as well

overall i was very pleased with them and would have given them another round, but i got a killer deal on my nitto terra grapplers, and they too have been great in everything but the mud(AT tires just suck in mud no matter how you look at it) if you want a good tire that will be killer off road, yet still give good traction on pavement id look at the bighorns(sure they are a little loud, but your driving a truck, not a cadillac), but if you are looking for more of a tire that will be the best all around and give better road manors then look at a set of nitto terra grapplers, im on my second set and i love them for an AT tire -i did get the E rated ones to as they have a deeper tread, and the ride is still nice imo. -just my thoughts on tires

Hands down duratracks for what your requirements are I love them... but opinions are like a holes you start a thread like this and thats what you get

BFG ATs are GREAT in sand but utterly suck at everything else

I recommend BFG A/Ts for sand hands down, however as someone else said no matter what tire you have the most important thing is to air down. Though I think 5-10 psi is a bit low, I would recommend more like 10-15 and probably wouldn't go lower than 8. Keep in mind that the lower your air pressure the easier it is to pop a bead, so be careful with fast sharp turns. Preferably either have a plan if you pop a bead, or carry a full size spare. And lastly, remember that you need to air your tires back up - if the nearest place to air up is right down the street then no worries, but if its 30 miles away or you have to get on the freeway keep that in mind.

I have a lot of experience in the sand with a 2wd 4cyl Tacoma and swear by the BFG A/T. Of course I have gotten stuck, but not often. I would generally run around 12-15 PSI and never had issues. Not sure how much experience you have in the sand, but I would be more than happy to give you some pointers.

Edit: I should mention that I never really drove it in anything but streets, sand, and desert. No idea how the BFG ATs do on rock or mud - but they did great in sand and hard dirt.

wow guys thanks for all the opinions...

i had bfg at ta's on my s10 which i had before the tranny went out that is how i came about to getting a 4runner. didn't get to try them on any conditions but on road really liked them..

the duratracs are what I'm thinking about going to the goodyear store by my house has a buy 3 get one free sale hope that last long enough for me to get new tires. I'm looking at the 285/70/16 or 285/75/16 the difference in the 2 are the width correct...and what would be the load range i want for mine.

until then I might have come up on a deal for some mtr's which will help me out when going to rausch creek this month (hopefully) and july...

02 the kind of use you are looking to put the runner through i think you would be better suited with 285-70-16 brigdestone revo 2. I am on my2nd set. They have never lrt me down i don't rock climb so i can't say they would be ok. When i was looking someone on yotatech was showing his new revos he also backed up his choice with the info from tire rack.com they got just about all 8.5 to9. all the way across the testing.I don't post i mostly lurk and learn. But this is one place i feel confident about. I have a 01 with a sonoran s7 lift it gave me the same sa a ss1 would have offerd. Don't have any heavy bumpers pretty much stock. I put these tires on 285-70-16 on stock rims in my case no trimming of fender flairs needed. This size tire is E rated and has a very deep tread check
out the stats on tire rack read the reviews from all over the country how people used them and try to make agood choice. you will be living with what ever you decide to get for along time. You can even see what your truck looks like with what ever tire you pick.
