What's the most gas you have ever put in your 5G 4rnnr?

It's not like I like to run my fuel tank to empty (A friends Dad always said "take care of the top half and the bottom half takes care of itself"), but I do like to have a good idea of the safety margins built into the dash fuel tank light and the computers range indicator on my cars.

After 6 months, I am still working that out for my 2012 SR5... the fuel tank indicator light came on yesterday on the way home from my daughter's soccer game, and by the time we were home and I took it out on errands and to get gas this AM, the range indicator was down to 8 mi.

I was somewhat surprised when the 23 gal tank only took 20.1 gal. I know there is a safety margin built into these indicators (and that they aren't that accurate, anyway). But I am curious... what is the most gas anyone has put into there tank w/o running out, or if you actually ran out of gas, how much did it take to fill the tank?

A tad over 20, and I was surprised to find I had enough left in the tank to go another 60 miles or better. My lo fuel light had already come on. Good stuff to know tho.

My light comes on with approx 3.5 gallons left in the tank and I've also had my range indicator go to zero but I've never put more than 21 gallons in at any fill up. I wouldn't have any worries going another 25-30 miles after the low fuel light comes on.

Most I've ever put is somewhere between 20 and 21 and that was after running with a range indicator showing 0 for at least 10 to 15 miles. I was very impressed. I usually try to fill it up before the range indicator drops below 10 but its good to know I have that kinda of safety net.

Side note: I was also doing a lot of highway driving so my MPGs were up there. Almost 21 MPG.

I'm old school. I always buy gas whenever my fuel gauge indicator reads at the 1/4 tank mark!

Wifey ran mine out of gas on the way to CO in January, and I put one gallon in there on the highway. When we got to the gas station, I added about 20.5 gal to fill up...so, about 21.5...

Normally I am around 20 to fill up once the light comes on.

Typically, I fill 20'ish gallons and I can get an additional 2 gallons if try topping it off. I live in CA so our pumps here have the annoying shock boot covers.

You should try not to keep pumping once it clicks since it's stopping for a reason. You might eventually mess up something up because of all the overflow gas going into the charcoal canister I think. I've posted a link about this before, but forgot where, lol.


Most I've filled up is ~21.5-22 gallons, and that was running with the low gas light on for a bit. Right when the low gas light comes on, it's ~20 gal for me.

Why do you guys run it down so low??? How hard is it to fill up at 1/4 a tank or so? Are you just lazy or just like putting things off until the last minute? Don't give a reason of "I'm too busy" or "The kids are too demanding" or some BS answer like that. Also don't tell me there are not enough gas stations around either. There were 159,000 of them in 2012. There are places where stations are few and far between but I can bet those of you who run it til the light comes on don't live there. Those guys who do PLAN AHEAD.

Geez. Buy the gas now and save headaches later. Those few cents you save are never worth the hassle.

lols, but to answer your question, I hardly run it down to the light, and when I do it's ONLY when I'm in town and near a lot of gas stations so I can get gas pretty much on demand. On any kind of road trip or anywhere I don't know where the next gas station is, I never drop below 1/4 tank because I'm a pansy like that

I usually fill up around half a tank. in case of emergency that gives me about 150 miles to get out of dodge and find another gas station.

Mine at least REALIZES the truck is low on gas, for the better part or 15 years my dad would have to check how much gas my mom had before she went out because she'd drive her truck until it sputtered dead out of gas on the side of the road.

i dont really think thats old school mentality.
its said that in-tank fuel pumps are cooled by the fuel, and you can damage them from running the fuel level too low, too often.
i think its said to fill up when it gets to 1/4 tank to avoid this.

it makes sense. and i believe i have proven it to be true. i used to always run down below the E on my 85. ive put 2 pumps in since ive had it, and the current is in need of replacing....

What headaches? At 1/4 of a tank I can still go nearly another 100 miles also that 1/4 of a tank may at times last me a week. It's not to save money either as gas is the same price per gallon no matter how much you buy.

Just callin' 'em as I see 'em. Lazy is the word. If I have to mention what a headache putting in a new fuel pump because it burnt up from heat and poor inlet conditions is then anything I say won't be understood in this thread.
