What's the real scoop about Toyota frame rust?

It simply comes down to the difference between taking care of a vehicle in a highly corrosive environment, or neglecting it.

So you are saying you looked inside your frame rails too? And identified no rust from within? You still didn't read where I asked about perforation coming from the inside out. That is how it happens. You do not always see it until it does happen.

Are you completely incapable of doing anything for yourself? Do you dress yourself in the morning? Does someone hold your hand every second of every day?

Here's one of my posts FROM THIS THREAD:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/159817-whats-real-scoop-about-toyota-frame-rust-5.html#post1950597

I'll even post the quote, since you need your hand held:

Really?

Out of curiosity I used my borescope to look inside the framerails of my 17 (nearly 18) year old 4Runner, which spends it's winters on salt-encrusted roads. You know what I found? No rust.

The vast majority of people don't bother to maintain their vehicles. The fact that unmaintained 4Runner's can last so far beyond the rust warranty period, is pretty impressive IMO.

You were the first person to reply after that quote, yet you continue to not (or don't want to) comprehend what I've said.

So one last time: There is no rust on my now nearly 18 year old 4Runner.

You bought a neglected old 4Runner. You didn't do your due diligence to ensure it was in good shape before buying, and now want to blame someone else for your mistake. Suck it up, and take some responsibility for your actions (or inaction as the case may be) in the future.

I reside in a very salty New Brunswick, Canada and have a 97' 4runner and it has copious amounts of rust on it's frame ! I did have a 97' outback too and that had zero rust on it's frame ! Might have had something to do with the fact that it came from Florida ! Ho hum, anyway.
Getting some rusted thru areas welded up next week on the 4runner, looking forward to getting those patched up ! Wooooohooooo.
Just waiting for the 4runner frame recall to happen ! I maybe have reached 500,000 klicks by then though !

Dude, stop behaving like a jerk.

How about minding your own business?

I have wasted too much time on this guy already. How many times do I need to repeat myself before he grasps what I'm saying? I have answered his questions numerous times, and he apparently STILL doesn't understand.

I get it, this hits close to home since you neglected your own 4Runner in a highly corrosive environment, and it rusted. You complained to Toyota about the results of your own neglect, and they good-willed most of the repair for you. You then stated you weren't going to take any better care of your new frame, as you have better things to do than to wash your 4Runner in the winter.

I suspect in 10 years you'll be blaming Toyota again for your rusted frame.

Personal responsibility is sorely lacking it would seem.

How about minding your own business?

Come on, dude. Stop being a jerk. Behave like an adult. You can disagree without being disagreeable. Instead, you've been disagreeable in this entire thread.

And since I started this thread, it is my business.

This looks awful. I've got an 01 with surface rust. Been in the Southeast its entire life (away from the coast, SC and NC). Should I be worried? Guess I'll climb under and look today. Never gave it a second thought until I saw these pictures. I pressure wash the undercarriage every wash, we will see...

First of all, you did not start this thread.

Secondly, this is my first post in this thread: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/159817-whats-real-scoop-about-toyota-frame-rust-2.html#post1949652

Point out exactly what is disagreeable in that post.

I have little respect for those that refuse to "behave like an adult" and take responsibility for their own actions or inaction as the case may be.

The other guy that signed up just to start a complaint about an old, neglected 4Runner that he failed to inspect thoroughly before buying, and now wants to blame the manufacturer of a vehicle that is YEARS out of warranty... well, again it comes down to personal responsibility.

After answering his questions time and time again, and having him still asking the same questions of me again and again, is an insult to me.

Completely and repeatedly ignoring the answers I've already given, has earned him a little derision.

Just checked, solid as a rock. Late to the conversation here but I'd have to agree. It seems some of these 4runners were just not taken care of. Just my .2.

You continue to say you're wasting your time on individuals who apparently are inferior and lack your superior intellect and understanding. Then don't waste your time. We don't want to hear from you if you're going to take that tone anyways.

It's really that simple. Rule #1: don't be a Dick.

If someone keeps asking the same question that you answered maybe asking if you could've explained something better and *gasp* MAYBE thinking that for once you could've done something better gets the point across just fine and is /actually/ helpful.

Being condescending and insulting is rude, completely unnecessary and frankly, has no place on this forum or any other public medium.

If you so persist in being a dick, please do so elsewhere, where it will be more appreciated by people who share your misery and apparent antagonism for those of us who are happily on the forum, both seeking and offering earnest, kind advice from one another.

Your sanctimonious post might mean more if you weren't calling me a "Dick" several times in the process. Which in case you weren't aware, is, as you say, insulting.

While you're instructing me in your condescending tone about proper behavior, look up the word 'Hypocrite'.

Finally, not that I owe you anything after your condescending, insulting, and hypocritical post, but I have in fact been offering good advice on this forum for over 10 years.

Naw. If anybody is going to leave, it should be whiny *****es that get mad when they don't get spoonfed, not knowledgeable experienced owners that actually contribute tech to the forum and don't mind helping those that help themselves.

02SE is a little sensitive on the topic of frame rust. I am too. We're both tired of hearing about how these frames are defective, and about how bad the roads in the rust belt are and how it must be somebody elses' fault that their frame is falling apart. Here's the thing, we live in SALT LAKE CITY. The entire one hundred miles to the north and west of us are nothing but salt. Our roads are liberally salted in the winter, we have salt on the roads in the summer for foks sake, and yet somehow, neither of us has significant rust on our frames and they certainly aren't falling apart. I'm sure 02SE takes very good care of his, because he's meticulous like that, and I'm sure his frame is immaculate. Mine is not, because I'm not meticulous like that :flipoff:... nevertheless, I do take basic care of my frames, washing the undercarriage several times each winter, etc, and my frame is also clean of major rust. So yeah, maybe he gets a little snippy. Maybe if fokkers would listen to the guy instead of arguing and insisting their frame rust is Somebody Else's Fault, he wouldn't be.

Some of the precious babies on this board need to understand that it's OK to be a dick when it's called for, and when a level and experienced guy like 02SE goes a little off the rails and gets a little assholish, maybe it's time to STFU and listen. Or, you know, don't. But it's your loss.

Would you happen to know if this is the same treatment applied to the Tacomas, or just a general rustproofing?

Just chiming in here with my own experiences...

I recently got my '96 4runner. I live in Colorado but flew to Florida to buy it. I researched it and saw that it had spent about 10yrs in the northeast. That immediately made me worried but I had the owner send me as many pictures as I needed, and it was exactly what I wanted so I took the risk. I flew out, went to pick it up, and realized it had a little bit more rust than I thought. 4 spots on the roof would need to be patched and the rear bumper was rusting out. I looked underneath and there wasnt any serious structural rust from what I could see, it actually looked pretty good.

Fast forward to now, 3mo later....

I have since repaired the 4 holes in the roof, putting in new panels, treated it, sealed off any leaks from the top, then headed underneath and treated the rust on the underbody. I am 100% confident that from this point on , I will NOT have any rust issues. I have saved this truck from a downward spiral and will no doubt last as long as I want it to last. Rust was my #1 concern buying this truck and I took the risk, did the work, and now have nothing to worry about. This is on top of all the regular maintenance I have done to it as well (belt, oil, plugs, LBJs, steering components, etc etc etc).

Rust prevention has always been my main concern on every offroad truck I buy. Did it with my jeeps, did it on the 4R, and will do it on all my future trucks as well. Every truck I buy usually has some kind of neglect since I like great deals, end up chopping them up anyways and love to build my offroad trucks up as much as possible. No reason to buy an immaculate 4R or Jeep just to cut the truck up and hack into it.

What it comes down to is responsibility. I dont expect any used vehicle I buy to miraculously fix itself so you have to do due diligence inspecting it, and maintaining it. If it fails, theres nobody to blame but yourself for either not inspecting it well enough, or not maintaining it well enough. We are all capable of doing the work needed to make our trucks last for years and years. If you dont want to do this, then buy new.

DiggerT4R : I'd be curious to hear what your method for treating the rust is?

I have a truck in similar condition, has some minor rust, but nothing unmanageable. Also have rust bubbling in the rear tailgate. Gonna treat the frame with Ospho/phosphoric acid and paint it and move on is my current solution.

It matters how bad it is obviously. If its bad, you gotta cut that junk out and replace with new metal. In your case, and probably mine aside from the roof, its as easy as using acid, a metal brush, a drill with a wheel, and the proper paint/coating products. I personally scrape away all rust with a wire wheel and go through the process of treatment and paint. I also liberally apply 'Fluid Film' after all the main treatment twice a year. I love the stuff and am pretty convinced it has helped prevent and slow down the corrosion process on most of my vehicles.

Didn't mean to be insulting (necessarily). I wasn't calling you a dick, I was saying you were being a dick (if that makes any sense to you). And I'm certainly not undermining your contributions to this forum. It's just....there never is a real reason why anyone should take that tone/be a jerk to anyone else. I find it to be more destructive than constructive, regardless of the posters intention. It is especially destructive because of the impression it can make on new/potential members who happen to just be reading any 1 post/topic (especially considering this one happens to be quite the hot topic). I know it can be frustrating dealing with other members/personality types...but in the end it is 80% how something is said over the years 20% of what is actually said that reaches the ears of the recipient. Just keep that in mind, if you will since I'm sure we all enjoy being on here very much and don't want to damage the the success this forum has experienced.

I take your point, and agree that our cars are what we put in to them and the care that is given. I certainly agree that everyone should take responsibility for the effort and the care that they put into their cars and that in the end, there is a relatively small margin of "blame" that can be attributed to "other factors" and "where I live". That being said, not all may agree and that should be respected. If it makes someone feel better to think that living in (blank) part of the country is to blame for why their 4runner is falling apart, calling them ignorant, irresponsible *******s (or whiny baby *****es, to use your sweet variation) is not going to change their mind. It is not going to help them in any way realize what they need to do to keep their 4R on the road. I think that needs to be taken into consideration before anyone responds (especially when someone is frustrated about having responded time and time again). And, as always, follow the advice we were given as children: If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. (Or at least say your "not nice" thing, in as nice a way as you can.... I mean, we're here to help, right?)

Thanks for the response though, I agree with the message, just not the approach. I don't think it is ever necessary to "be a dick" to someone... but we can agree to disagree. That's the beauty of this forum.
