Wheel painting prep?

This will be my first paint job. Do I paint the wheels while its on the car or do I take off the wheels and paint it away from the car? Sorry if it sound dumb. I'm a noobie in training

Thanks to everyone who posted/contributed. Here i am 2 years later and learning from this post! If you folks are still using those rims it would be great to see how they held up! My 97's (one set) is DESTROYED due to 5 years in PA, and the rest in WA.
Do any of the steps listed fill pits in the rim?

As for the tires. Hell I dont know if I like em or not because I just bought this off of my Dad because he got a new one and my wife liked it. He seemed to think the Micheliens M/S were better and smoother as I can tell a bit also but I dont drive it everyday.

Dad is 100% correct. Unless you are into medium-heavy offroading, the Michelin M/S is the finest SUV tire money can buy IMO.

Treat them decent and they will last 80K miles all day long. Factory siped so they are great on snow and ice and they are smooth and quiet. ;-)

Hello,

I found your posting on how you painted your rims. You posted the process back on 2010. I was curious as to how they lasted and what they look like now? I'm really considering doing the process but it's a lot of work if it only lasts a few months or so.

Thanks.
