Wheel place ripping me off?

New Rims!

I went to discount tire the other day to have my wheels balanced, I have the front end shakes at highway speeds and there are no wheel weights on any of my wheels, so I assume that is why.

anyway, (after waiting 45 min) they pulled my first wheel off, and the guy brought out one of the washers, said it was broken off from the wheel and too rusty to work on.

1. Aren't those washers normally separate? Guy is off his rocker?
2. All I saw was a bit of surface rust I can clean off with a wire brush, how much rust is too much?

Do you have any pictures? There aren't usually any washers involved with wheels and lug nuts. Some pics might help but does sound fishy...

Went out and took some pics, i guess upon inspection it looks worse than i remember it looking when i checked out my brakes

You can see the conical bits, which i assumed were washers but are not all loose, so maybe they are supposed to be attached?

I can only say this from personal experience (in my area) but the Discount Tires/Americas Tire stores/staff I have dealt with have always been quite professional and honest IMO/IME.

Can't help you with the question as to whether these are attached or not. Did it appear attached by looking at the the wheel and the broken piece(es)? I know they sell conical washers for wheels.

someone overtightened your lug nuts a lot. I`d replace them all , new set at discount tire is like $20. is that what they try to sell you?

I've always had good experiences with them as well, which is why I frequent them. When he came out with what I assumed was a conical washer, and told me it was a broken part of my wheel, and immediately asked me if he could show me some new rims, I got suspicious though.

Guess it looks like he might have been right, either those are rusted on pretty bad, or supposed to be attached and falling off

Oh well, time for new rims!

I have never seen anything like that. Plenty of toyota wheels out there though, you can probably find a set without buying them at discount tire.

Rust and Other Concepts

Thanks for posting up.
You have touched on a significant metallurgic concept.
Surface rust can usually be easily removed, restoring near original dimension and appearance...however, the actual strength of metal can be significantly compromised (picture wings falling off planes) by stress, heat, corrosion, chemicals, radiation, micro fractures, manufacturing anomalies, ETC.
If you have reason to suspect (age, apparent rust, dimensional deformation) that critical parts are compromised; replace them with new parts made to specs.
Or, don't and save a few bucks.

those aren't washers, they are the lug nut seat. part of the wheel.

like you said, time for new wheels.

Yea those are suppose to be part of the wheel. Ive only seen that kind of style on steel wheels, but definitely should not be coming off. There are places that you can have it repaired but honestly I think its time for a new set of wheels. Also Ive always had good experiences with discount tire aswell. Guy might have been showing you some new wheels as sorta a safety precaution.

Thanks for the replies, I don't know all that much about wheels, thank you nevada for identifying them as lug nut seats

moral of the story, discount tire is not ripping me off, and lug nut seats look like conical washers if they come off the wheel

You have a 1st gen right? If so, that top wheel will look hideous on the 1st gen's simple design.

Get that Level 8 (Tracker I think it is) in the bottom pic you posted if those are your two options.

I agree with Wilson. I would go with something simple or traditional in design. .....but this is all subjective. I typically like simple wheel designs in general regardless of the vehicle year.

I call them and switched for the level 8s, I feel better inside now, thanks for kicking me in the right direction :tea:

these are a -30 offset, I'm lifted 2", this isn't going to cause me any headaches is it?

wow, i have pulled wheels off tons of trucks, never say any as fubarred as yours. Glad you are getting new wheels.

That being said, the wheels being screwed up definitely contributed to your problems but you really need to inspect the rest of the front end components like TRE's, bearings etc...

Yea, ima look it all over real good when i paint the frame this fall, wheel bearings especially are on my list anyway

Are you ready for new tires? If so I would go with 16" rims. I would also go with factory rims from a later 4Runner. You could get all four for about $100 off Craigslist. The reason I would go with bigger rims is the limited tire sizes in 15". I notice with most brands the 15" tire is more expensive than the 16". Also alloys are lighter so better MPG's. Steel rims are if you intend to wheel a lot. Not sure of your intentions for the 4Runner. Have them hand torque the nuts to 80 ft/lbs. Toyota wheel studs snap easily.
