First of all I want to thank everyone for all the info ahead of time. I've learned alot from the guys on here and have done alot of mods. I'll will at some point put up my build thread.

So I've seen mixed answers to this question and trust me Ive done my research but want to be sure from those who have gone thru this.

I have a 2001 SR5. I have ordered the Boss System from Toytec. I have also ordered a new set of Goodyear Duratrac 285/75/r16's and I am running on the original 5 star toyo wheels. Will I or will I not need spacers and if so what size? I don't want to switch wheels I love the original's. I'm also thinking of removing the factory fender flares as my wife has backed out of the garage and tore one up has anyone else done this?

Thanks guys... One last thing when I get the lift in is there anyone in the Fort Worth, TX area that my be able to lend some knowledge? I can do pretty much anything mechanically but I have never messed with the suspension seems pretty cut and dry but its my DD so don't want to be in the situation of getting rids to work lol.

It all depends on the back spacing of your wheels. I'm running 285/75/16's on 4.25 of back spacing, have no spacers, and no rubbing. So people have issue, and some don't. There does seem to be a lot of mixed reviews for this one. I was told that I would need them, I bought them, and I didn't need them.

I would suggest spending a lot of time going through the search function. The stickied thread at the top of the 3rd Gen forum has a great way to search the site.

As far as your question, yes you will need spacers. The issue is that the tire is too wide and will rub the upper control arm. You can go with either the 1.25" or 1.5" spacers as either would work. You will also need to cut/pound the pinch weld. Again, use the search function in the stickied thread and you'll find the walk throughs that people have done for this. Without doing the pinchweld mod, then you'll run a very good chance of cutting your tires up and having to replace them a lot sooner than you want.

Removing the factory flares isn't an issue. I've done it on mine as I'm looking for some Limited/SR5 type flares. You can check out my build for some pics.

This is the issue the OP is talking about. The search function told me I had to have them, and I didn't. You're saying the flares don't need to be removed, and I had to remove the small section of flare on my front bumper. I didn't have to do any welding, or any mods to fit 285/75/16. At full lock I have no frame rub, and I don't have any when flexing either.

What wheels are you running? Almost all stock Toyota wheels have at least 4.5" backspacing. Most have 4.625" backspacing. You said your wheels only have 4.25". That may be just enough to clear the upper control arm. It also depends on what 285/75/16 you're running. Some are wider and taller than others, which is where you could possibly have issues.

I guess the only way to know, is to get 1 tire mounted to a spare rim and test the fit for yourself.

I have nothing to add to the conversation. I plan on doing the exact same thing, though. Boss (or maybe Ultimate) lift, 285/75/16 tires (probably Duratracs, too), on stock ('99 LTD) rims. I'm not sure if spacers will be needed either.

I'm sure you considered the "Ultimate" lift as well. Is there any reason you chose the "BOSS" over the Ultimate? I'm not completely sure what the difference is. Which coil and shock options are you going with? Do you also need a 1" BL to clear the tires?

I'm looking forward to seeing the final result.

I'm not sure I needed them but I'm running 1.25" Spidertrax on my 4Runner with 285s because I like the wider stance. My FJ wheels have the same offset as stock 4Runner wheels.

My wheels are the standard 5 star ones so I'm not sure of the back spacing. I'm hoping not to need them. Again I see many different answers lol.

I am gonna say save your money on the spacers and get UCAs. I am running the Boss kit, 285 Duratracs, Light Racing UCAs, and ProComp 8069 wheels with 4 in of BS and I don't have any rub issues at straight stuff. Start turning and your gonna hit your firewall. Your front part of your flare will rub and on full stuff it is going to probably rip you mud flap/flare off the rear. Also your going to want to trim your pinch welds.

I ran the 3" OME set-up on my 1999 Limited and I never used wheel spacers for my 285-75-16 MT's.

Now, I did switch over to the "Tundra 16" 5 Star" (not sure of the real name) and I never had a single issue with 120K miles of driving/off-roading. The tires were almost a flush fit with the Limited cladding package. I thought it was a great look for the 3rd gen, too.

Here's a shot of the old girl with that same package:

Seems like all of us have the Silver runners lol. I appreciate all the info. I'm going to try without them and hopefully I don't have to order any and wait to drive since its my dd. I'll post up before and after pics as soon as I get around to it all.

I really like the way she sits.

I"m going with the red 600lb coil in the front then 890's in the back. Paid the extra 60 for the bilstein's in the back. I picked the Boss since I've heard good reviews and it's not much more on the price side. I don't mind spending the cash. Wanted new parts and didn't want to piece it all together.

Run spacers or get wheels with less backspacing. Wide stance always looks boss. In my opinion, lifted trucks with stock track width look stupid. Not to mention it makes them extremely unstable.

Thanks man! I did too...

We bought it brand new and I let a friend talk me into selling it when I picked up my '07 Sport Edition a few months ago. I really regretted the decision the minute it left my driveway!

Regret? is the 4th gen less appealing? I may think about picking one up a few years down the road after my mines reach 300k.

It had some sentimental value... I got married in 1999 and my wife bought it brand new for me, as a wedding gift. We went on a ton of great wheeling, hunting and camping trips with it, too. You know, it was just like having a pet in the family for 15 years. I'm old and sappy... that's my excuse! LOL!

As far as the 4th gen is concerned, nope - she is an all around beast. I bought the 4th gen used and stock (w/ 60K on it) and did all the work myself. If you like the 3rd gen, you'll love the 4th gen!
